This Knight of the Crown is driven by a painful past and a patient fury… and his entire life is a lie.
Sir Carlton Morley is famously possessed of extraordinary will, singular focus, and a merciless sense of justice. As a man, he secured his fortune and his preeminence as Scotland Yard’s ruthless Chief Inspector. As a decorated soldier, he was legend for his unflinching trigger finger, his … trigger finger, his precision in battle, and his imperturbable strength. But as a boy, he was someone else. A twin, a thief, and a murderer, until tragedy reshaped him.
Now he stalks the night, in search of redemption and retribution, vowing to never give into temptation, as it’s just another form of weakness.
Until temptation lands—quite literally—in his lap, taking the form of Prudence Goode.
Prim and proper Pru is expected to live a life of drudgery, but before she succumbs to her fate, she craves just one night of desire. On the night she searches for it, she stumbles upon a man made of shadows, muscle and wrath… And decides he is the one.
When their firestorm of passion burns out of control, Morley discovers, too late, that he was right. The tempting woman has become his weakness.
A weakness his enemies can use against him.

This book was great from start to finish. It started with a forbidden interlude between the H and h and ended with an exciting shoot out to rescue her from the villain. It was heart wrenching and emotional at times and sexy hot at other times. I was able to identify with both the H and h and felt their anguish as they worked through their lustful pull and their love attraction for each other. I recommend this book. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars was the profanity sprinkled throughout. It was prolific, but it was there. I didn’t think it was needed.
I have been waiting so long for Morley’s story! And while I’ve been more than anxious, the order in which his story falls in this series was perfect. I needed his role in the previous books to make me have such a fondness for his character. The more I learned of him in the previous books, the more I wanted him to find happiness. The evolution of his strange friendship with the other Victorian rebels came full circle in this story. While the others owned their darkness, Morley had to hide his behind a badge. Dorian, Dougan, and Argent had formed a bond in prison. Morley’s life had led him on a different path. They’d always been separated by that line. It thrilled me to no end to see the bond they formed. And when the going got tough, they were like a Victorian version of the Avengers, protecting and aiding each other.
Morley had proved unlucky in love up to this book. Another reason I loved him. He was married to his work and because of that fact, his life had been lonely. Prudence Goode was the perfect woman for him. She understood his work. The meeting of these two characters made every second of my wait worthwhile. Holy Moly! By chapter 3, I couldn’t have put this book down for anything! Prudence, looking for one night of freedom, and Morley, investigating a case, meet up at one of London’s most exclusive brothels. They experience a night of electrifying ecstasy. A night that each walked away from not knowing with whom they’d spent the most memorable night of their lives. Three months later, they meet again. And what follows is a dark, emotionally gripping romance with characters and situations that will make you question your own moral compass. The twists, turns, and revelations in this book took my breath away. A page turner in the truest sense.
For me, this is the hardest review I’ve ever had to write because I can’t explain how utterly phenomenal this story was without giving away spoilers. Suffice it to say, if you’re a Victorian Rebels fan, you’ll be thrilled with Morley’s spellbinding story of passion, betrayal, intrigue, and adventure. And if you’re new to this author or series, you are in for the ride of your life. This is one of the most compelling series I’ve ever read. Kerrigan Byrne is in a class by herself. Her books are written with sheer elegance. Lush, descriptive, and poignant language that will sweep you off your feet and into another time and place. While I guess you could read this story as a stand- alone, I can’t imagine reading it without knowing all that took place prior to this book. Grab the whole series. You won’t regret one glorious moment of it.
The Knight of Shadow is the 7th book in the Victorian Rebels by Kerrigan Byrne and it shows in the best of ways. Carlton Morley has been a secondary character since book 1, sometimes with more screen time, sometimes with less. I’ve been invested in him since the start, I also wanted to punch him a few times, but that happens with all great characters.
Morley has worn many hats through his life and we get to see how they influenced him through this book. He seems at first a bit too proper, too cold and too boring but boy was this wrong. His meeting with Pru is out of this world crazy and hot, and the book goes at it starts. Pru seems naïve, innocent and, to make matters worse, she babbles when she’s nervous. She’s also more: courageous, open minded, adventures and she knows how to make people comfortable.
This book has the marriage of convenience trope(one of my favorite!) and I loved seeing them together and trying to make things work. Not many people can write forced proximity well, but Kerrigan Byrne blew this out of this world! Unlike the other books in the series, ms Byrne doesn’t physically torture her hero(just mentally) and this made the book a bit lighter than the others.
Overall this is a great addition to the series and I will reread it with pleasure. I recommend it to fans of the series and to people new to it, it can be read as a stand alone, though a few of the former heroes and heroines of the other books make an appearance.
