I want a devilish baron.
The more I read of Lucy Langton the more I look forward to her books. The author writes such colorful and descriptive scenes in her books. The characters are realistic and for how short the books very well developed. This was a book of faith that was not over the top. It was truly an outstanding piece.
I enjoyed reading this book. I thought it was a fun, sweet and romantic story. The story line is good and the characters are great, well described and engaging. There are good twists and turns in the plot line, so you’re kept guessing as to how it will turn out. The book got off to a slow start for me, I thought it lagged a little in the first half of the story. But then it picked up and got exciting from there on out. I enjoyed the epilogue and extended epilogue, but in my opinion it’s kind of annoying to have to click on a link and go online, and then enter my email address once again just to get to the extended epilogue.
I enjoyed reading this book and loved the characters. I thought the characters had great depth to them and the storyline flowed well.
The book starts you off with Emily receiving life changing letter. The man she was engaged to send her a cruelly written letter to break it off. Lewis’ condescension and arrogance were shocking to Emily as he has never behaved like this to her before. Simply put she was beneath his consideration. She was not wifely material and not worthy of him. And she did not have any social standing to speak of nor a substantial dowry. My heart ached for her. That wretched man to tear asunder her heart. With the help of her family she dragged herself up and went to London to stay with her father’s sister Aunt Jacobina. As a serious writer, she longed to get published. She sent it to a publisher and waited. In the meantime, Charles owns the publishing company and was completely engrossed in Emily’s book. He did not want to put it down. His father the Duke required him to go to a ball of a dear friend of his in his stead. Charles did not want to. At the ball Charles felt drawn to Emily as a kindred spirit. It was apparent that neither of them wanted to be there. They enjoyed speaking with each other until her ex Lewis came with his acerbic tongue, his bullying tactics and his shame mongering. What happened is too good to tell you here you have to read it. Again, my heart went out to Emily for taking Lewis’ abuse. Emily did not know that Charles was the second son of a Duke and that he owned the publishing company she submitted her manuscript to. But Charles recognized her name immediately but did not say a word. It was so romantic that he wanted no surnames nor titles between them. He just wanted them to get to know each other as Emily and Charles. So many things happened after that meeting. It was apparent that Lewis was miserable and was spewing his anger onto Emily without cause. His betrothed was worse than he was when it came to arrogant entitlement. But it was greed and social connections he gained by being with her. The relationship with Emily and Charles was so romantic. Because she had been so hurt before she was trying to be cautious with Charles. When Charles held her and kissed her, she lost all rational thought and was lost in him. (swoon worthy) They had some baggage to get through and that was tough on both of them. (Wicked Witch from Oz theme song) Lewis went out of his way at every event to seek Emily out to viciously, hardheartedly, spitefully abuse Emily. Emily’s usual M.O. was to run away from him. But because things were looking up in her life, she stood proudly before him and dished it back to him. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall to have witnessed that. Emily had gumption and I was yelling ” about time, let him have it, don’t hold back”. I was rooting for her the whole time. Emily is a lovely young lady, not only beautiful on the outside but even more beautiful on the inside. You have to read this book. It will keep you on your proverbial toes. You will not want to set it down. Bonus: Lewis gets his own chapter from his point of view. What a game changer. In the end everything Emily ever wished for came true and I could not have been happier with the ending. A wonderful book and I highly recommend it.
