SecureGen was a boxset of five books in the Private Security series by Clara Kendrick. I provided a quick snapshot and rating for each book while also providing an overall rating for the series. The books can not be bought as stand-alones but only as the set and they read as one continuous story. This was my first read by the author.
Book One:
Jane Albright was a weather reporter for a local TV news station in Philadelphia. She currently had everything she wanted and was working towards a long Network career until she encountered a terrifying challenge. Enter Mark.
Mark Crowe was a contractor with SecureGen, a security company that was owned by Nathan Mackenzie, a childhood friend of Jane’s. He was assigned by Nathan to protect Jane.
This was my first story by the author so I had to get used to her style. I like a mystery – actually I love a mystery, so the plot was appealing, but the story felt mechanical. It was told more as a documentary then in first person so I had a hard time connecting. It also felt like it was from the mid 1900’s but with up to date technology. However, I did enjoy the mystery so I was able to plow through it to the conclusion. In the end, I enjoyed the suspense. Kendrick also provided a teaser for Nathan’s story in a future book.
Book Two:
The book began with Lara taking several live tests as an interview process for becoming an agent at SecureGen. We learned quickly that becoming employed at SecureGen was a long process – a very long process. Jackson was an agent for SecureGen. Kendrick detailed a unique introduction between the two then took us through their friendship, the SecureGen hiring process, a current SecureGen Mission and the impact both Lara and Jackson’s past had on each other.
By book two I was getting used to the author’s style, but it still read like a documentary to me so the connection wasn’t felt but only observed. Additionally, the editing errors were numerous and somewhat distracting. It did however, have the suspenseful thread that I love and so I was intrigued and invested. Kendrick also continued to further develop a SecureGen plot that started in the previous book and will unfold throughout the entire series. It definitely had promise and hooked me in.
Book Three:
Colin Bracewell was a former SecureGen client that was in need of their services again. He was a widower, a single father and CEO of a major corporation, which he founded.
Hazel Klein was an agent with SecureGen who focused on children and their mental well being. She was assigned to Colin’s case to assist with his eight year old son Max.
As I read book three I was hooked on the suspense. My take on the author after reading three books was that she was a suspense writer and not so much a romance writer, even though each book had two characters that were developing a relationship. The suspenseful plot was the focus with two characters finding an HEA as secondary. The writing style was consistent, which meant I still felt it read like I was watching from the outside looking in and couldn’t feel the connection, and there were numerous errors. But I loved the suspenseful plot and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
In book three Kendrick took us through Colin’s conflict while simultaneously forwarding the SecureGen plot that began in book one and I assume will conclude in the last book.
Book Four:
Andrew was the SecureGen IT Security expert and he could hack anything. He was the youngest of the group and was happiest in front of a computer and away from people. He never met with clients but for this one time, Nathan sent him out for IT Security within a client company.
Molly was an artist at heart but her father made her work at least one year at his company. She hated everything about it until she was assigned to babysit the new IT liaison.
Andrew and Molly hit it off immediately. And although Kendrick took us through the relationship development, the plot focused more on the conflict that began in previous books. Kendrick progressed the mystery further, but not to a complete conclusion. I enjoyed the suspenseful plot; however, there were many assumed outcomes where I wanted more detail and a deeper dive. This was consistent in all of the books so far, but I was at the point where I needed more. Additionally, there were numerous editing errors. Many of the errors were present in the previous books (primarily missing words which made incomplete or incorrect sentences), but were more prominent and more distracting by book four.
Lastly, Kendrick provided a big twist that will be further developed and played out in Nathan’s story in book five.
Book Five: 1/2
Nathan Mackenzie was the founder and owner of SecureGen. We knew from previous books that he had a tragic event that changed the course of his life forever and Kendrick unraveled pieces within each previous book. Book five was the conclusion that brought it all full circle. It was action packed and consistent with the previous books.
Series Rating: 1/2
I enjoyed the suspenseful plot that ran throughout the series. However, I wanted more detail. There were too many assumed or omitted details that I craved and were pertinent to the storyline. Overall it was a great plot but needed more description and detail for the main events and conflicts. And as mentioned previously, if you’re interested in suspense over romance and can overlook numerous editing errors, then you’ll enjoy this series.
