When firefighter Hunter Callaway makes a grisly discovery during a scorching fire at the house of his former high school sweetheart, everything he thought he knew about his past is now in question. Always enjoy her books. Light reading and holds my interest.
This is the story between Hunter Callaway and Cassidy Ellison. Hunter met Cassidy when they were in high school and it was an instant attraction. What Hunter didn’t know was that Cassidy was dealing with a lot of problems at her foster home. Right before the prom, Hunter received a text that Cassidy was leaving with a boy from the foster home and Hunter was heartbroken. That was the last Hunter had seen of Cassidy. Fast forward 14 years and everything has changed. Cassidy gets a call that a detective is looking for her and she starts to panic. Afraid that her past may be coming back to haunt her. Then Hunter shows up and she’s feeling a lot more than just panic at seeing him again. He’s no longer the boy she once dated in high school. He’s definitely all man now!

Hunter and Cassidy were young and in love , until Cassidy ran away with another boy!
Turns out that was not the story!
Hunter Callaway is in the family business, he’s a firefighter, when he answers a call, what are the chances it’s Cassidy’s old foster house and the mysteries don’t stop there !

Another great read by Barbara Freethy!!!
This is book # 6 In Callaways Cousins and book #14 in Callaways the last book about the Callaways. I am sad to see this series end but looking forward to the next series Whisper Lake where we will meet more Callaways cousins. Even though this book is a part of the Callaways series you can very well read it as a standalone. Let me warn you can’t stop at only reading this book you will want to read the whole series. What an exciting book with so many twists and turns. Ms. Freethy has a way of writing that won’t let you put the book down until you finish the last page. The characters are realistic, very likeable and make you feel a part of their story. I can’t wait for the new series to come out.
ARC for honest review with no compensation
Secrets We Keep is book 6 in the Callaway Cousins series but book 14 for the Callaways. Another well written, suspenseful, mystery, danger and romance all rolled into this book. While part of a series this book can be read as a standalone, but once you read any of theses books you will come back for more!!
Cassidy Ellison and Hunter Callaway were high school sweethearts until Cassidy ran ways with another boy from the foster home she was living in at the time. Now years later she is a suspect in a gruesome crime at the foster home and has to return to her past and Hunter.
Hunter Callaway makes a gruesome discovery when he and his crew are dispatched to a fire at the foster home of his high school sweetheart. Little does he know that finding the answers to Cassidy’s past may be what brings them to a future together….
This is one of my favorite series and this book is just was amazing as the others.
Hunter and Cassidy have a past and the present throws them together again. I love the Callaways series and this is just as good as the rest. Will these two be able to work together to solve the mystery or will secrets keep them apart? A really good romance, mystery, with forgiveness, and moving toward the future.
Hunter and Cassidy were high school sweethearts. Cassidy broke Hunter’s heart when she ran away with no warning. After 14 years they are brought back together under disturbing circumstances.
The first fire call Hunter goes on after returning to work after his injury is to the foster home Cassidy was placed. Not only does the fire bring back memories of Cassidy, Hunter also discovers a murder that involves someone from Cassidy’s past.
As a Hunter and Cassidy work together to solve the murder there is no denying the chemistry between them. Can they learn to trust each other and put the past behind them?
Many Calloway’s make appearances – with the arson and murder case. But there is the wedding of Annie and Griffin which brings everyone together and also solidifies Hunter and Cassidy’s future.
Being placed in foster care after your parents tragically are killed in a car accident would be hard on any child. Bouncing from home to home, then seeing what can happen when you try to tell a person who should believe you what is going on, is terrifying. Running is Cassidy’s only option, except she must leave the boy she’s crazy about to save herself.
Hunter doesn’t understand why Cassidy left. She just disappeared with nothing but a text letting him know she’s leaving with another boy from the foster home. He is devastated. As time passes, a bit of him still wants to know what happened. Then, on his first shift back as a firefighter for SFFD, Cassidy’s old foster home burns to the ground and there is evidence that Cassidy might not have left after all.
What a wonderful read. Ms. Freethy knows how to spin a tale! Arson, attempted murder, suspense, road rage, secrets revealed, hospitalizations, family gatherings, a wedding, and of course, a HEA. This book has it all!
I’m loving the Calloway’s and can’t wait to visit with the next branch of the family!
Secrets We Keep by Barbara Freethy is the latest in the Callaway books. It stars Hunter, the injured firefighter who rode his motorcycle to South America, and Cassidy, his high school sweetheart.
Note: this review contains spoilers!
It all starts when Hunter back on the job discovers a body in the walls of the place where Cassidy used to live as a foster child. She disappeared on him 14 years ago, but this can’t be her, can it? If it isn’t, then where is she? Did she really run away with Tommy like she said?
But it’s Tommy in the wall and Cassidy is found working in landscaping garden center. Unfortunately, Tommy’s death isn’t the only secret from that foster home. What happened to Molly, the girl that everyone one else said Cassidy made up? And when the foster dad’s car went off the road and killed him, was it an accident like everyone said, or something more sinister?
Barbara does an excellent job of weaving self discovery, romance, and suspense into this book! It was beautiful how both Hunter and Cassidy learned to trust and love again. And I didn’t figure out the mystery so I was on the edge of my seat to find the really bad guy!
I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!
Nobody blends romance and mystery like Barbara Freethy. Another great story about the Callaway family. I feel like I know this family.
When firefighter Hunter Callaway finds human remains in the wall of a burning house, he is shocked. Even more shocking . . . this is the house where his high school girlfriend, Cassidy Ellison, lived when she was in foster care. Cassidy ran away from this home on the day of the high school prom that she was to attend with Hunter. He hadn’t seen her since that day.
This book had me turning pages well into the night when I should have been asleep. I just had to find out how it ended. I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good contemporary romance/suspense novel. You won’t be disappointed.
Another winner by Barbara Freethy. Hunter is returning to firefighting after 8 months recuperating from an accident on his last call. For years he’s felt like something is missing – is it that he doesn’t want to be a firefighter, or something else? Cassidy has created a new life for herself after escaping a horrendous situation in foster care. Too bad she made her escape on the day she was supposed to go to the junior prom with Hunter. Then a discovery from the past brings them back together. While attempting to put the past hurts and secrets behind them, they work together to stay one step ahead of danger and solve a years old mystery. Plenty of tension, suspense, secrets coming to light, and romance. A great mix and a wonderful story!
I give this story FOUR STARS.
Nice story, I personally couldn’t get into it. I gave it four stars because my own attention-span did not take away from Ms. Freethy’s writing.
The last in this branch of Callaways. As all the predecessors this is a relaxing good read. We start with teen romance, breakup and jump forward to the present and of course the two teens, now adults, run together. There is of course, romance, mystery, danger and a back story, to keep the reader interested, a couple of good twists thrown in for good measure. A fast paced good read.
Hunter and Cassidy, high school sweethearts whose lives were changed by events in Cassidy’s life. Years later, these events come back to the surface and they must face what had haunted them for years. Another fabulous story of a Callaway — a mystery to solve, danger and romance all wrapped together. If you’re not already a fan of Barbara Freethy, this story is sure to make you one.
Secrets We Keep is a captivating book
that grabs you from the very first pages
to the last! It’s a romantic & suspenseful thriller.
Hunter & Cassidy fell in love in high school.
Till Cassidy ran off with someone else.
Hunter was left heartbroken.
Fast forward fourteen years.
Hunter’s first day back at the firehouse,
after he’d been on leave, he makes a gruesome discovery in a house fire.
The surprising part is that it’s
the foster home where Cassidy lived.
Once it was confirmed who it was,
Hunter knew he had to find Cassidy,
& finally get answers to all his questions.
It’s is a well-written book with memorable characters & a story that just unfolded brilliantly! I loved everything it!
Most Highly Recommended!!!
Hunter is finally back on the job after an eight month sabbatical. Now he just needs to decide whether firefighting is what he really wants to do for the rest of his life. On his first call back, his past rears it’s head. His ex-girlfriends foster home was on fire. When Hunter was venting the walls in the garage, a body fell out. Cassidy disappeared 14 years ago & was never heard from. It couldn’t be her, right?
Cassidy had a great life until she lost her parents as a teenager. Suddenly she was thrust into foster care. After she met Hunter, life was tolerable until one of the other girls disappeared & the others all denied she’d ever been there. She knew she had to run away in order to survive. She’s changed her last name & went on with her life until Hunter tracked her down after the fire. Now her life is in danger. Who is behind it all?
Ms. Freethy has a talent for giving her readers warm, emotional characters that tug at the heart. The suspense & characters pull the reader into the story & the romance keeps them involved. The characters are realistic & the interactions make you feel a part of the story. I’ve loved the Callaway’s & hate to see this series end. I can’t wait for Whisper Lake to come out!
