Ellen and her two best friends share a mid-life crisis by hatching a plan to renovate an 1860’s Greek revival in the nearby historic district of San Antonio. Although Ellen isn’t one to believe in ghosts, she comes face to face with something inexplicable in the attic. Her ghost-enthusiast friends convince her that they must help the spirit find closure, and as they dig deeper into the past, they … they uncover a shocking history that someone in the neighborhood doesn’t want exposed. But Ellen and her friends don’t give up easily. They realize they’ve been called to give voice to the invisible women who suffered behind the walls of the house for decades.

I absolutely love this book!! I love a good mystery story and this one kept me guessing. I listened to this story nonstop in one day!! I truly enjoyed it.
I listened to the audio and I feel like the narration could have been better. It was mediocre at best. But I truly enjoyed the story.
Loveable ladies take on an engaging mystery…
This captivating tale of three friends setting out to renovate and flip a house is definitely not your average haunted house story. The three lead characters and all the other people in this story (whether major players or merely peripheral persons) are so carefully crafted with their own unique personalities and attributes that they spring to life in the reader’s mind. The story, itself, is mesmerizing with all the back-story details of the characters’ lives and especially with the convoluted and macabre history of The Gold House (the house purchased by our leading ladies). This is one of those stories that is achingly hard to put down when bedtime rolls around or something requires your immediate attention. It really is that good. I also had the opportunity to listen to the audio version of this book and was delighted to discover that the author, herself, narrated the story which made the experience a special treat because you can be confident that the reading truly reflects the author’s vision of the story. As it turns out, the author is not only a gifted writer but also a talented performer of audio entertainment. The bottom line is that you get a beautifully crafted, wonderfully suspenseful story about likeable, authentic people caught up in the most intriguing of circumstances. Well-written, well-read, and thoroughly enjoyed.
I purchased this story in e-book format but was gifted an audio copy by the author and the above is my honest and unbiased opinion.
Great page-turner! Really liked the character’s friendship and their adventure through the revival of the house. Normally not something I’d read, but very much enjoyed it!
This is not a genre I normally read but was pleasantly surprised. Great story with strong likable characters. Author kept the story moving, it was very hard to put down. Finished it in 3 days!
couldn’t get past the 1st chapter. This author needs to do a LOT more research before writing again about a subject she knows nothing about. It isn’t that hard to learn about Real Estate practices. They are fairly typical throughout the US. Highly irritating, don’t waste your time.
I have read two of her books, but in the wrong order. Really enjoyed them for a good story in front of the fire.
I enjoyed reading this book. Having lived in San Antonio, it was like coming home. Very descriptive of the locale. Loved the HEB bit. Not predictable, enjoyed the relationship between the 3 friends who bought the house.
Loved it. Couldn’t put it down!
Love this book, I’ve read the entire series. I can wait for the next one to be available.
Mystery Suspense
Never finished it, in fact didn’t get beyond the first few chapters
Easy to read. Once I started it I couldn’t put it down
I thought this was going to be a suspense story. Also, as a male, I’m pretty certain ladies will enjoy it much more than I. Take a seat and enjoy the trials 3 women experience as the suffer through a mid life crisis together. Their plan to engage in renovation of a “Greek Revival” style house gets them involved in some very unreal escapades.
I found the mystery aspect to be quite thin and easily figured out. While I managed to finish the book, it was primarily because I believed that there had to be more of a mystery than what I expected and that there was. And there was one male character who was totally unbelievable for me. From a best selling author, I expected more.
Interesting read. Easy to follow the characters.
Easy read, almost too easy and story lines wrapped up too conveniently
I enjoyed reading this “coming of age” book. The “coming of age” being three friends experiencing “empty nest syndrome.” Humorous, fast-paced, complicated characters, twists and turns everywhere. The story actually puts light on the inhumane practices and usage of “asylums” in the past. Happy ending.
Three women dealing with an empty nest and a stale life decide to collaborate on a house restoration. Inspired by the many home remodels they have seen on television, they tackle a house together. The neighbors are difficult, the house seems to be haunted, and life crises get in the way of completion. A well done classic mystery.
In general the book was very well done.
There were a couple of spots where there was some flow/plot confusion.
And near the end there were a few Britishisms thrown in. Torch app? Definitely didn’t expect it. Now, if it had been set in a British town, I would have.
Otherwise, a really good story.
This book is highly readable and the characters are especially well drawn. I guess it it was sort of scary, but mainly it is a well drawn character study. I could identify with all three of the women.
