This was a fun, clever, fast paced read from beginning to end. Nothing is straight forward and some of the twists will keep you guessing to the end. At some points the plot goes in so many direction it is hard to know what is important to pay attention to, but somehow it all comes together at the end.
Passion, murder, intrigue, political alliances, and secrets that could change the fate of the galaxy. An exciting read that will make you want to spend more time in the Star Lawyers universe.
This book reads far more like the Star Lawyers books than the previous two books in this trilogy which leaned more YA. The kids are all grown up and the author’s snarky and sometimes lewd sense of humor is in full force. This book is for an older audience. It can be enjoyed as a standalone and could by a fun introduction to the Star Lawyer universe if you have nor read other books. It does further develop characters from the previous books and helps provide some backstory to the Star Lawyer books that fans of the series will appreciate.
“Facts unknown are fiction to the ignorant.”
“Find the hope in the unexpected. Find the courage in the challenge.”
An Intriguing and in-depth account of first contact, narrated in a well accomplished and highly defined first person narrative by some of the main characters. This Origins trilogy is a very engrossing and necessary complement to The Star Lawyers series. How mankind achieved the FTL drive and started its inevitable conquest of the Galaxy, and the acceptance of humanity within the existing aliens. A thought provoking and inspiring story. The author blends elements together skillfully in a precise manner, dragging you in a whirlpool of successive thrilling events. It has been a wonderful and exciting ride! Fun, humorous, tension filled, fantastic high technology, and quasi magic like powers, astounding and unique aliens, astonishing and complex world building, the work involved is superbly demonstrated! The whole origins series has been enthralling, reaching a climactic and overpowering end! Engrossing and immersive, it felt too short a read. Another fascinating read by Tom Shepherd, with his honorable seat with the great SciFi classic authors. Nice to know there’s a second trilogy on the works, starting with Wind Among the Stars #4!
“Dark stars protect you.”
Every series has a beginning and an end. Secrets of the Rahjen is the third book in the Star Lawyers Origins trilogy. While it is the last book in the series it is the first one in time.
This book tells the story of how the Star Lawyers were recruited and the first adventure in an alien judicial system that they have to learn how top navigates on the fly all the while representatives of a predatory star nation are trying to kill them. Being this is the first book in the trilogy the Rahjen have to be careful not to give them their advanced technology.
The book is a fast read. It will keep you up nights reading late while you follow how the lawyers from 21st Century Earth manage to stay alive and present a defense in court to keep them from b ing turned over to the the predatory nation. A very satisfying story that will leave you wanting more.

Title:
Settling down for life ?
A continuation of Sally Ann and Mark Bricchetti s narratives ~ seven years after “ Bad Moon Rising, “ can you imagine her being legal to drink?!?!!
In any event, she s now at Stanford and working as a top computer programmer. In the intervening years she grew up, started showing her intelligence and found that she has a knack for programming. She grew in other ways too: still blonde but in no way dumb, vivacious, snarky, even stunning, definitely would make life interesting here on Terra. Lucky for the men of Terra, she entered the starship. Oh those poor male aliens, talk about your “ alien abduction “ scenarios. 😉
This time she sneaks aboard the starship, and the adventure begins. The
whole thing starts at the graduation of Tenella Jennings PhD, followed by a house warming for Dr. Tanella Jennings and her husband. Have to keep her alive so she can realize her mistake that everything Einstein said isn t in fact law.
She gets a chance to redo her hypothesis that the speed of light is the speed of time. This was proven wrong in the late 1940s, when President Truman refused to admit that there could even be such a thing as an Unidentified Flying Object < aka Roswell, New Mexico: 1947. >
All the powers (who actually control the country) started to promote the idea that everything that the top expert (in their opinion) said was fact. { Why they ve never changed any/all of his theorem(s)/theories to Einstein Laws is unknown.
Scientists upto the 1960s experimented with what went wrong with a theoretical camouflage experiment in 1943 aboard the destroyer escort Eldridge { which proved Einstein s illogical theory that the speed of light was the speed of time to be incorrect. } As the scientists made progress, they died under mysterious conditions and no investigations were performed. Including Dr. Brown s experiment demonstrating how a flying saucer can achieve flight.
Since the mid 1970s -to get any type of a physics degree- you have to perpetuate this false belief. Until this false propaganda is changed, there will be no new advances in stellar flight, and the American people will live in a downwards spiral back to the agrarian lifestyle of 2 centuries ago.
On the plus side of science, this isn t the case elsewhere in the universes or even on this particular planet. Thankfully other planets weren t restricted as to beliefs, nor as to how they developed. Which leads us to the crux of this book. While Terra is still a backwater planet off in one of the distant arms of the galaxy, there are those who see a chance to cause Terra to remain a backwater planet and not develop into a star nation. By their beliefs, this is entirely legal. While the possibility of Terra becoming an actual star nation is a foregone conclusion, the time in which it happens is still fluid.
This book is really about a good legal battle for the rights of worlds to develop at the pace that s right for them. Some worlds could be offered a probationary position with the Association, however, this wouldn t be logical for Terra. While some citizens could handle the galactic logistics of such an action, most people would be ill prepared for such an event. Since a fair sized group of people were born after the late 1940s. These people of the United States of America, as well as those who follow the path laid out by the American leaders have been indoctrinated to believe the aforementioned lie of President Truman.
Granted President Truman was dealing with a post war economy and the conditions of rebuilding the country, but to” slam the door “ to taking a giant leap of advancing man into the heavens is the equivalent of burying his (and our) heads in the sand.
Even though once each planetary star nation reaches Faster Than Light < FTL > capability, they seem to advance quickly for a period of time. Almost as if they re trying to make up for lost time, never knowing that they achieved FTL when they were technologically sufficient to achieve it.
Spaced throughout this book are some potentially awesome advertising for naval recruitment. Too bad that they re for the Miyosian Navy.
I m sorry that Sally Ann never married on Terra (IMO), however, I look forward to reading her Sci~Fi book.
Live life,
John Shrek Walters
