I really love this series! I am in awe of the wonderful writing talent Rue possesses. The story flows effortlessly and one is finished with the book before you know it.
The characters really have become my friends and I plan on revisiting them over and over in the future. I will be sad when the final page in the final book in the series is read but I can take solace in knowing I can revisit them again and again and be swept up in the story and experience the magic of this series all over once again.
As in life good people die at the hands of despicable people and I weep for the loss of characters I have just barely gotten to know who die in this series.
I truly would encourage everyone to read this series. Some books you can read and forget but others stay with you always. This is one of the latter. I place it up with CS Lewis’s The Chronicles of Naria and JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Do yourself a favor and start this series and you will be”hooked” before you get very far into the first book of the series The Courage of Kahu.
Once again Rue has taken me on an exhilarating journey with Flynn Hawthorn as she strives to reunite the Book of Shadow with the Book of Light and bring peace to the land.
Prisoner of the Light (Book #5) left us with Flynn creating chaos to cover the escape of Rowan, the brother of Magdalena, the Shadow Witch. Flynn now feels empty as Rowan, her heart’s love, flees. She knows she must destroy Magdalena, even though Rowan’s loyalty will lie with his sister.
Secrets of Kabara is a quick read but has an action packed story within it. The suspense builds as the Coven of the Sacred Wood votes to strip Flynn of her magical powers. She flees to Kabara where we meet a new set of characters, one being Flynn’s father.
Meanwhile Magdalena’s daughter Roselle is growing at an alarming rate and already displays signs of wielding great powers. In the shadows lurks Anise who feels betrayed. While Flynn had saved Anise from Magdalena wrath, Anise had still come to Magdalena hoping to be initiated into the Shadow Coven. When Magdalena refuses to do so Anise swears revenge upon both Magdalena and Flynn. She will regain possession of her mother’s magickal amulet that Magdalena took from her. After then taking control of the Book of Shadow she will destroy Flynn Hawthorn’s bloodline for all time.
With so much going on, the reader remains aware of the conflict faced by Flynn and Rowan. Flynn must destroy Magdalena, yet Rowan loves his sister and protects her – often from herself. How can their love survive all this?
I was so excited to find that Po is back. He has grieved the loss of his mother and remains steadfastly loyal to Flynn. And Hazel is the best friend anyone could possibly hope for. I love these characters!
Rue has us all at the edge of the cliff. What is going to happen next? How long do we have to wait for the next installment?
This book was a very quick and fun read. I believe this book did a good job of really showing Flynn’s true character and heart. We have seen Flynn struggle throughout this series with feelings of inadequacy, fear, and self doubt; however, in this book I believe that Flynn realizes that she has to do what is right for her and stop trying to please everyone because that will never happen. I think this book really depicts her ability as a leader and I am excited to see how she handles the potential struggles with Roselle and the Shadow Queen. I feel this book is a perfect setup for the end of the series and it definitely left me wanting to more.
