A new novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series: Lt. Eve Dallas must separate rumors from reality when a woman who traffics in other people s secrets is silenced. The chic Manhattan nightspot Du Vin is not the kind of place Eve Dallas would usually patronize, and it s not the kind of bar where a lot of blood gets spilled. But that s exactly what happens one cold February evening. The … what happens one cold February evening.
The mortally wounded woman is Larinda Mars, a self-described social information reporter, or as most people would call it, a professional gossip. As it turns out, she was keeping the most shocking stories quiet, for profitable use in her side business as a blackmailer. Setting her sights on rich, prominent marks, she d find out what they most wanted to keep hidden and then bleed them dry. Now someone s done the same to her, literally with a knife to the brachial artery.
Eve didn t like Larinda Mars. But she likes murder even less. To find justice for this victim, she ll have to plunge into the dirty little secrets of all the people Larinda Mars victimized herself. But along the way, she may be exposed to some information she really didn t want to know

What happens when the woman everyone loves to hate dies in front of you?
See that justice is served.
When society reporter Larinda Mars dies just steps away from Eve Dallas in a busy New York restaurant (coincidentally owned by her husband) she locks down the doors and begins an investigation that will lead her into the dirty little secrets of some of the city’s most prominent members.
Larinda Mars held a profitable sideline blackmailing people to keep their secrets. The deeper Dallas searches, the more suspects turn up.
I love the connection between Dallas and Roarke. Their relationship is the quiet in the storm that is Eve’s job. The little things Roarke does for her, such as making sure she eats healthy and has comfortable shoes warms my heart. As he puts it;
He brought the hand he held to his lips. “My cop spends a good portion of her day on her feet, walking these streets and chasing bad guys. I have a fondness for those feet, and consider good boots as essential in your daily pursuits as your weapon.”

I give Secrets in Death 5 lovely kisses
This is still my favorite series even after 45 books. After this many books, you’d think the series would begin to be stale – but it isn’t. Each new book is as exciting and interesting as the previous one. This one is more like a police procedural than most others have been. Eve and Roarke aren’t running at breakneck speed trying to catch a psychotic serial killer, terrorist, etc., they are following the clues step-by-step and it is great to have a slower pace and see how the two of them play off each other. It is so nice to see that Eve is settling into the ‘Marriage Thing’ as she calls it. Of course, Roarke, being the most romantic hero ever, makes it easy.
Larinda Mars (I think we met her at the beginning of the series – book #2 maybe) doesn’t have a single redeeming quality, but she doesn’t deserve to be murdered – especially right in front of Lieutenant Eve Dallas, NYPSD. Eve had finally agreed to have an after-work drink with Garnet DeWinter, a forensic anthropologist, at a trendy nightspot. As Eve enters Du Vin she notices Larinda sitting at a table with a male and the next time she sees Larinda she is staggering, bumping into people and – bleeding – a lot. She falls to the floor and dies almost instantly.
Larinda is a gossip show host on the same channel with Nadine Furst. However, her real talent is discovering people’s secrets and threatening them with exposure. Eve doesn’t like her and she likes her less and less as she learns more about her. Eve always stands for the dead and she’ll stand for Larinda whether she likes her or not.
I bought the Whispersync narration to go along with the written text because Susan Erickson does such an awesome job. It is worth every penny just to hear her say – as Roarke – “Darlin’ Eve” in that soft Irish accent. It just gives you shivers!
This is a great book – and it could be read as a stand-alone, but you will be missing so much. This is one series that I definitely recommend reading from the beginning just to get the growth of Eve and Roarke’s relationship, backgrounds and the friendships they form with the supporting characters.

At the risk of repeating myself, yet another winner in the series. The usual humor here and stellar back-up performances from secondary characters. Our victim also doubles as a villain in this one which makes for a slew of possible suspects. My only complaint was the extremely swift “light bulb” moment and wrap up at the end. Normally there’s a longer denouement to savor Eve’s triumph…but that’s OK, I’ll take it.
I love these JD Robb books. Her characters are originals, her plots are amazing, interesting and complex. I like how her detective lieutenant, Eve Dallas interacts with people, especially her officers and hubby Roarke. I like that Roarke always manages to get involved in and help with Eve’s cases, and once I start reading I am riveted to the pages and can’t put them down. This series is amazing, I have every book and plan to read them all over again!
Love the story line, will be glad it can continue.
It’s great to spend time with Eve and Rourke, whenever, wherever. I’m always impressed when Eve works so hard to get justice for someone whom is hard to like. Everyone deserves justice, even when they don’t earn respect in the way they choose to live. The whole cast of characters is here and that’s always worth my time!
Another great “In Death” book from J.D. Robb. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this series. Dallas and Roarke are a spectacular team and the supporting characters are fun to follow, too. I love that it’s a bit futuristic yet the basics of analyzing and following the evidence to solve the crime is always the focus. For anyone who loves “murder mysteries”, this series should be on your MUST READ list!
Love the series and always look forward to each installation. As with television, a long running series will have episodes which rate along the spectrum from 1 – 5 stars. I love the fact that the books are true to life, sometimes life is great other times blah… The readers who look for great in every “In Death”book are unrealistic.
Sat up half the night to finish. Great read
All of the JD Robb series is fantastic!
Never miss an Eve Dallas book. Love them all and all contain a great cast of characters
Love this series
Love all the Eve books can’t wate for the next’s on
Book 45 and still keeping me glued to the pages. In Secrets in Death we do not have the nail biting scenes, but like it is mentioned in many of the reviews this one was more of a police procedural who done it storyline. The victim in this case is a gossip columnist who is in the trade of secrets and blackmail. The more Eve investigates the more horrible she becomes.
But this is what makes Eve so amazing, however horrible the victim was, it does not matter to her. What matters is that that person is now hers and she will stand by the dead and it irks her like no other that it happened right under her nose.
Besides the storyline, what I always try to find in these books is a significant moment. In this book it happens to be between Roarke and Summerset. There is nothing Summerset would do for his kids and Roarke definitely came under that category. I loved witnessing that scene between these two.
Overall, even though this was much slower paced, the mystery definitely kept me interested.
And I always love to see the interactions and relationships with the people in Eve’s life.
In Death is a great series!
This is the 45th book in this series. Eve has an unliked reporter/gossip women fall dying into her arms. Finding the killer also means finding out hidden secrets as the dead women is also a blackmailer. Although I figured out the killer early on, the plot, characters and mystery was worth the read. More information comes out about Summerset too.
Dallas is confronted head on with murder. I can’t remember her being present at the death of a victim. But, I kept waiting and waiting for the clue to determine who had killed the reporter. Finally, it began to come together. As usual, I love the little plays on language and Eve’s –what does that mean anyway? And Roarke, the man every woman would love help her with her work …
Love everything JD Robb
Adore this series!
