Few books make me feel as though I’m coming home as soon as I start Chapter 1. “Lord of the Rings” is one of them; “Secrets at Cedar Cabin” is another, and I hadn’t even read this one before.
Book 3 (and the finale) in Coble’s Lavender Tides series, Cedar Cabin brings back familiar faces from earlier books as well as from her Rock Harbor series. I do recommend reading this series in order, as it references storylines and fleshes out characters well beyond their own respective books.
Coble deals well with a tough subject (sex/human trafficking), presenting the facts and cruelty of it without showing too much, which I appreciated. She explored the toll it takes on families “left behind” as well as just how easy it is to be lured into that world. Heartbreaking.
Coble also dealt with another tough subject, one that strikes close to home—Alzheimer’s. My grandfather had this disease, and reading about it brought back quite a few memories.
A worthy conclusion to (and indeed my favorite in) the series, one I’m sad to see end. I love these characters and hope to see them again in future novels!
I received a copy of the book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
What a Book! I have read most of Colleen Cobbles’ books and this stood out as very informative and possible and is a downright possible scenario . Every mother of a 10+ year old girl should read this and sit down with their daughter and have an important conversation!
Bailey’s life has been turned upside down since the murder of her mother. One of the biggest changes has been fleeing from Rock Harbor, MI to Lavender Tides, WA. Once there she meets Lance, an FBI agent hunting for the human trafficking ring that abducted his sister five years ago. Through wonderful mastery, Coble has written an edge of your seat thriller with plenty of romance.
Secrets at Cedar Cabin is the third book in the Lavender Tide series and it kept up with the first two as being a fast-paced read with no dull scenes. You will find yourself embedded in Lavender Tides as you read. Fans of romantic thrillers will enjoy this book/series. You can read each as a standalone with no issues.
This book deals with the more sensitive subject of human trafficking so before giving it to a teenager to read I would sit down and discuss what human trafficking is and what to look for on social media and how to stay safe. Coble does an excellent job of showing how scarily easy it can be for our young women to be picked up by these horrible excuses of human beings.
I enjoy reading Coble’s books as I know I am guaranteed a clean romance, no obscene language, and a happy ending.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson-Fiction through NetGalley. Any and all opinions expressed in the above review is entirely my own.
I’ve enjoyed my time in Lavender Tides. Ms. Coble skillfully brought this series to a spectacular conclusion. The Rock Harbor mention was such fun. I’m excited to read the next adventure from Ms. Coble.
Recommend to readers who enjoy clean, romantic suspense.
I borrowed a copy from my local library. All opinions are my own.
I enjoyed this story a lot, and will say that Devon O’Day, the audiobook performer, is terrific. Coble’s tale is inventive and filled with both action and romance. I’m a guy listening to a female-driven story, so feel free to take that into account.
Other reviewers have astutely critiqued the implausible nature of this story. Characters make foolhardy decisions, staying in the infamous cabin where they already know the mob is scoping it out, and the last 20% of the story is almost cartoonish in nature, as one freak thing after another piles into the script. Planes are flying around in white-out blizzards, folks hiking through five-foot drifts at two a.m., good guys and bad guys getting the drop on one another. The story literally borrows from the ludicrous ending of “Kindergarten Cop,” where an animal bites the antagonist on the neck, forcing him to drop his gun with a screech.
The other head-scratcher is the idea that a sex-trafficking ring can be fronted by a legit Apsara dance troupe where Cambodian girls perform and also serve as $15,000-a-night call girls. How many men can afford such a treat? And wouldn’t such a captive blurt out her predicament to a sympathetic customer? The sex trade is a heartbreaking tragedy, and I spent my childhood in Thailand, so could certainly visualize the innocents on Patpong Road having to ply their craft under duress, but parts of this didn’t seem realistic.
I read such books with appreciation for the God element, but in this story there’s virtually zero of that for at least the first two-thirds. C. S. Lewis once suggested that the world doesn’t really need more Christian books, just really good books written by talented people who keep the God element somewhat latent. I approve of that, but in this story it truly is way submerged. On a scale of one to ten, the Jesus aspect is a 1.3. Most of the story is hookers and guns and corruption and thugs discussing how many people they have to get rid of and toss into the basement.
Still, this is a tawdry story told with a noble heart, and that’s never a bad thing.
Loved this book which gives the details of the baby born in a previous book in this series. From the beginning, she is running from danger and ends up in Lavender Tides where she begins to uncover the details of her life and finds her true siblings. Of course, there is a love interest, Lance, and the circle of friends who work together to keep her safe. Great characters and lots of twists and turns along the way – makes for a great read.
I’ve enjoyed this series. Well written and keeps me turning the pages.
As always Colleen’s books are the best. It was good to learn about sex trafficking even in “ small safe towns”. Usually I can figure out the bad guy but not this time.
It was an easy read
I really liked the way the story read. I could hardly put it down and read it in just a few days. Looking forward to reading more of this author’s books and the series.
I had trouble putting it down!! I love this author!! I have never been disappointed by anything Colleen has written!!
I always enjoy reading anything by Colleen Coble. Her books are always full of suspense and I spend many nights awake with her books.
Love it
I really liked this book. I found it hard to put down. Yes, Ms. Cobel always has strong women in her books, but the men are too. They love and support their women. I’m anxious to read the next book in this series.
Love every book she’s written
Great book
I received a copy of this book from The Fiction Guild, I was not required to give a favorable review. This was the third book in a very thrilling series. I so enjoyed the writing of Colleen, I have read other books from her and each draws you into the story and makes you feel each of the feelings the characters are feeling. This one started 24 years prior when an earthquake hit Lavender Tides, but 3 children lost their mother and each story in the series is about how they find each other. But the best is how they fight against bad guys acting like good guys and happiness is something to achieve. I look forward to more books from Colleen.
Suspense at its best brings a conclusion to the Lavender Tides Series with a bang. I was anxious to finish on one hand and didn’t want it to end on the other. The hot topic of trafficking is handled in a sensitive way and opens your eyes that someone you know may be behind it. I loved that Bailey didn’t back down and even though she was hiding that she was sensitive to her neighbors needs. Her strength was impressive as a character and she drew me into her story. There is a lot going on in this book but it was not overwhelming. I recommend reading the other books first so you have the background to the other characters. Wonderful edge of your seat series.
I received a complimentary copy from Thomas Nelson & Zondervan Fiction Guild. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.
I can always count on Coble for a twisty turny suspense that keeps me turning pages and a romantic thread that makes me swoon. Her latest is no exception. Don’t miss it!
