A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES meets LOCKE & KEY in this completed, hauntingly good witch series!
… LOCKE & KEY in this completed, hauntingly good witch series!
I always wanted supernatural powers.
What I didn’t anticipate is that uncovering them would mean dealing with a whole host of “other-worldly” problems.
For starters, I’m pretty sure the house I’m living in is haunted. Either that or I’m losing my mind. Secondly, I’m going to a college for supernaturals with zero ideas on what powers I possess. But someone higher up than me must know something, or I wouldn’t be here. Right?
But here’s the kicker…
Everywhere I go, new secrets are emerging. Like, the fact that I went missing when I was a kid and I don’t remember a thing. And this ancestral home… it has secret rooms… hidden rooms. And yeah, it’s more than just haunted…
*PLEASE BE ADVISED: This is a YA+ academy / witches series. It’s labeled YA(+) for stronger language and some mature situations. As the heroine ages and grows, so does the content of the stories.*
Fans of KF Breene, Shannon Mayer, and Kel Carpenter will love this supernatural page-turner.

This story drew me in from the first page. I found the story to be action packed, suspenseful, twisty and quite intriguing! The blurb caught me first and once I fell in with Autumn I couldn’t stop reading. I can’t wait to continue this series and see what else awaits!
Secret Legacy is the first book in The Windhaven Witches series.
Final Rating: 5 Stars
This was my first read by this author – I will be reading more by her! Loved it!
I liked it, but I didn’t love it. Slow-moving and somewhat cheesy at first, but just enough to keep my interest. And boy, am I glad I did. Once I hit the 30-percent mark, this book became quite the page-turner.
From a likable protagonist in Autumn Blackwood to the mysterious family legacy along with a forgotten personal past she’s about to unlock, you will embark on quite the heart-pounding adventure.
I can really liken Secret Legacy to a similarly titled book, Spirit Legacy that I came across last year while flipping through Kindle Unlimited. However, Secret Legacy embarks upon its own original path that is rich in history, character, and plot development.
Needless to say, I’m craving more.
I rather enjoyed this introduction to this series. I feel the heroine, our main character, Autumn grows during the reading of it. I’m excited to see more about her powers. I am thoroughly sucked into the 2nd book!
I love this book. Not like it was a surprise, since I’m a huge fan of this author!! But I love the romance, the banter back and forth, and the neat way the cultural history of my own television icons growing up has been integrated into this story. I think it added a great dimension to the book, and an endearing quality to it. Iif you weren’t around in the 90’s, you might lose a bit of the fun and appeal of the nicknames the main characters use for each other, but it won’t detract from the main story itself, which is intriguing and interesting. It takes some cool twists and turns, and it doesn’t quite end up where you think it might. But it gets you to a place where you’re heading in a direction ready for the next book, which is also pretty spectacular!
I received this (e)book as a gift, and I have offered my honest opinion.
This book had my attention right from the start. Autumn is a normal young adult whose legacy has been kept secret. She’s given a once in a lifetime opportunity and jumps at the chance. Before she embarks on her new life she meets the mysterious and perfect guy, Wade. Struggling with a new school, new friends, weird things happening and her boyfriend, Autumn faces her challenges head on and reveals her true nature. What will happen now that she’s discovered, who can she trust, has she made a huge mistake with her friend Cat? Can’t wait for book 2 to find out!!
I had a lot of fun with this first book in the series. I’m a great fan of this writer, so no surprise there.
The book starts with Autumn getting a invitation to go study at Windhaven Academy. Her father lives in the village in a huge house: Blackwood Manor. A house with a ghost, secret rooms, strange noises and all. She meets Wade, she meets Angel (wink to old TV-series) on a cemetery and a kid disappears.
Witty dialog, dark secrets, some banter, new strange abilities… All and all a very good read!
I received an ARC from the writer and offer my opinion freely.
Secret Legacy: A Supernatural Ghost Series (The Windhaven Witches Book 1) by Carissa Andrews is a wonderful story that I have read. This is book number one in this start to a brand new series that I have loved reading and I can not wait to read the rest of this wonderful series. I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves reading about suspense and mysteries.
I received a free copy of this book via Story Origin and am voluntarily leaving a review
Secret Legacy by Carissa Andrews drew me in with the beautiful cover and the blurb. I wanted to read more urban fantasy and this one came at the right time. But by the time I was ready to read it, I already forgot what it was about. I prefer going to into books blind though, so I don’t have that many expectations. And I think it was a good decision I did that.
The beginning of the book was rather generic urban fantasy. A girl has an opportunity and finds out she has powers, but what kind? Halfway through the book after much resistance of the MC, she finally decides to do the right thing and read what her friends told her to read. After that, she became more bearable. Part of the story is Autumn’s enrollment into the magical school, Windhaven and while she spends some time there, I don’t really see this as a magical academy book. The school is just a tiny part of her world at this time and in the story.
The thing that bugged me the most, besides Autumn’s attitude, was the amount of movie/tv references. While I’m okay with including some, these were way too frequent and were often explained, which shouldn’t be necessary. If the readers recognize the reference, great. If they don’t, they’re not pulled out of the story because they think “what the heck?”.
The second half of the book reminds me of The Awakening by Kelley Armstrong, when Autumn goes to school and tries to figure out her powers. That’s where the story is deviating from the generic urban fantasy path, which I like. So get through the first bit so you can read the fun bits. I’m really curious as to what’s going to happen in the second book. At least we won’t have to wait long.
A three-star beginning but four-star ending. I think it’s definitely worth to read, and with the other books in the series coming out soon, you won’t have to wait long.
I love this story right away! It kept me up most the night reading until I got to scared to read. Yep, I’m a bit of a wuss but this is so good I couldn’t stop turning the pages! Windhaven is such an interesting place but the Blackwood Mansion has got to be the scariest! The story line and the characters are great and Carissa Andrews has a knack for setting the stage and fleshing out the characters until they are almost real. I love how she doesn’t telegraph a thing so as not to spoil the plot or make it boring. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I have read everything Carissa has written to date and this new series though different from her other stories is equally as enthralling as her other works. I can hardly wait for book 2 to be published.
(3.5 rolled up to 4.0 stars)
If this had been written by any other author than Carissa Andrews, I wouldn’t even have given this book the time of day. It’s not really my bag, books about going to ‘magic university’. I mean, I couldn’t even get into the first Harry Potter book for gawd’s sake!
However, this is a Carissa Andrews book, so you know there is going to be so much more in it. And there is. The author writes works that are easy to read, entertaining, and fun. Don’t go looking for anything too deep, just enjoy the story. There’s actually very little to do with the school at this stage (yeehah!). Perhaps as I go through the books, I’ll become more open to the school aspect? Stranger things have happened.
More than a couple of mysterious characters in here, including our main character, Autumn’s father, her lover Wade, and a pair of twins who know more than they are saying. The ‘secret legacy’ of the title is a good one. Or bad, depending on your point of view.
The romance in the story happened a wee bit too quickly for me, but who’s to say that this doesn’t happen to people with abilities? If they are sensitive to other things, then perhaps their loving souls may open faster to each other? Just a thought…
As it’s the first in a new series by this author, it’s a given that I’ll be reading the rest. (NB I’ve just finished reading book two, and it is FABULOUS! I’ve just preordered the series.)
I chose an early copy which I then voluntarily read and honestly reviewed. All opinions are my own.
Before I begin my review for Secret Legacy by Carissa Andrews, I would personally like to thank the author, the publishers and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this ARC and I have reviewed it honestly.
An unexpected acceptance letter to a supernatural academy finds Autumn returning to the town of her childhood, yet Windhaven is nothing like what she remembers it to be. Secret Legacy by Carissa Andrews is an unpredictable, spooky and mysterious YA ghost story yet is not your typical supernatural academy tale.
Secret Legacy features, but is not limited to, the following themes:
YA romance
YA fantasy
Supernaturals
Ghost story
Spooky
Supernatural school
Mystery
Secrets
Family curse
Disappearances
My overall rating for Secret Legacy is…
3.5 Stars!
This one was spooky! A YA ghost story with a fluffy romance and an underlying mystery, Secret Legacy sure kept me guessing. The book focuses very little on the supernatural academy side of things and is more secrets and self discovery. Overall, I was satisfied but not enamoured.
Nice touch of mystery and suspense.A nice little page-turner. The mystery and suspense start right away. The end is a nice cliffhanger(you know there is more coming) that leaves you wanting more.
This book is packed full of awesomeness! Supernatural academy? Check. A girl who feels like she doesn’t belong? Check. Sexy, mysterious boy? Check. And alllll the secrets, twists, and turns to keep you flipping pages. You don’t want to miss this one!
Ok from my rating you have guessed that this wasn’t a perfect book for me but it is a promising beginning to the series. Autumn was an odd protagonist as she’s twenty years old , still hasn’t started college and has dialogue and internal monologues that felt dated as if someone much older was speaking for her. Plus the fact that she sits around in a cemetery was just such a ridiculous cliche.
Now having said all that I did like that there’s a school for those with paranormal gifts although why Autumn would accept an offer to go there believing she had no magical abilities totally baffled me. Her mother works hard for her living whilst Autumns estranged father who she decides to live with lives in relative luxury which wasn’t really explained very well. Autumn has an instant boyfriend ( honestly I rolled my eyes at that although Wade is perhaps the most interesting character ) and quickly makes friends. What completely saved this book from a lower rating was the final third because then it got really interesting and yes I would like to find out a lot more about what Autumn can do and just why Wade is really in her life.
So perhaps not exactly what I had hoped for but as a YA novel it took the idea of a magical school and gave it a new twist which I liked.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
Wow!!! Instantly hooked by this mysterious, supernatural series! Autumn was raised by her divorced mother knowing supernatural existed. She’d long hoped that she’d show a glimmer of power, but she’d come to accept she was merely human. So how and why did she suddenly gain an admission packet to a school for supernaturals? On top of that, it was a full ride!! Thus starts the beginning of her eyes being opened…just not as fast as she’d like. Upon moving in with her long absent father, and showing up to the school a slew of odd things happen. She also meets an interesting cast of characters that make her aware all might not be as it appears. Autumn goes on the search for the truth, and her legacy. Go on the exciting journey with her. I absolutely can’t wait for the follow up!
This is an amazing book! I truly love it! The storyline is emotionally charged, intriguing, mysterious, suspenseful, and grabs your attention from the very beginning! The characters are just plain fantastic! I would absolutely recommend this book! I cannot wait for the next book in the series!
fantastic read.
I don’t wanna wait that long. I can’t wait for it to be out!
This book was okay. It was not the best read I have had, but it was not the worst. I enjoyed this book and will get the other 3. I did however find the beginning of this book a little slow and did not quit pick up until the end. This could be because it was setting up the middle two books.
Autumn Blackwood is an interesting character. Throughout the book, we are learning about her father’s family, the town, and herself along with her. Not knowing why the Windhaven collage would accept her and she herself did not apply, Autumn goes and to figure things out. She meets fellow students, who seem to know a secret but will not tell her but will guide her. When you read this, you see her growing as a rounded character. I am interested in seeing how much more we will see this growth, seeing how this book ended. I like how she does not trust easily unless her instincts tell her otherwise. She wants to be adventurous but still cautious because of the supernatural’s involved in the town.
The other characters in this book all hold the same secret against Autumn. As the reader, they are holding it from us. I like this set up for this book. It works well. These characters are interesting, and you want to be cautious like Autumn but also want to know what is being held back. These characters are a little flat for me, but I hope they will round out in the following books.
The setting is a town called Windhaven. The Author intertwines the history behind this town with the locals and the supernatural. Even though this has been seen before, I still enjoy this idea. It feels natural and you can see this town in any city or country.
I enjoyed this book. It was a fun read and felt well written. This book sets up for the two middle books in this series well. I recommend this book for those who like paranormal new age books and dark fantasy.
