In San Francisco, the souls of the dead are mysteriously disappearing—and you know that can’t be good—in New York Times bestselling author Christopher Moore’s delightfully funny sequel to A Dirty Job.Something really strange is happening in the City by the Bay. People are dying, but their souls are not being collected. Someone—or something—is stealing them and no one knows where they are going, … knows where they are going, or why, but it has something to do with that big orange bridge. Death Merchant Charlie Asher is just as flummoxed as everyone else. He’s trapped in the body of a fourteen-inch-tall “meat puppet” waiting for his Buddhist nun girlfriend, Audrey, to find him a suitable new body to play host.
To get to the bottom of this abomination, a motley crew of heroes will band together: the seven-foot-tall death merchant Minty Fresh; retired policeman turned bookseller Alphonse Rivera; the Emperor of San Francisco and his dogs, Bummer and Lazarus; and Lily, the former Goth girl. Now if only they can get little Sophie to stop babbling about the coming battle for the very soul of humankind . . .

Christopher Moore has a great ability to create cartoon like characters among serious and dire supernatural characters that cross their paths in a real world-esque situations. He often parodies other characters and themes prevalent in literature and contemporary issues in a fun and suspenseful manner that keeps you wanting to read more. If you haven’t already had the pleasure and enjoy irreverent humor, give this book a try.
I am a big Christopher Moore fan. Just finished Secondhand Souls, the sequel to A Dirty Job. Like all of his books, it was funny and sweet and made me wish I actually knew the characters in the book.
A sequel to A Dirty Job – still fun, stilly dirty AF, yet still thoughtful, philosophical and though it may be lacking in just a touch of the poignant gravity of the first (nothing *quite* compares to losing a beloved wife in childbirth), it makes up for it by fleshing out the Moore-verse really fascinatingly.
I waited 7 long years for this author to to come out with a sequel to his “Dirty Job “and to hear Sophie say “Kitty!” Again.
I love everything about Christopher Moore!! This story, like most of his, is appropriately absurd and absurdly hopeful!!
I love Christopher Moore. While Second Hand Souls may not be as good as A Dirty Job (which I give 5 stars) it’s still a funny and entertaining read. I have yet to be disappointed by his books.
I liked most of it. Didn’t really like the squirrel people.
This sequel to A Dirty Job is just as funny as the original. The original characters are just as funny and messed up as in A Dirty Job. It was like revisiting old friends. The interwoven ghosts’ stories, while funny and entertaining, are a bit distracting. The story is funny and well written. I wish there was more of the Emperor.
The follow-up of ‘A Dirty Job’. Make sure you read that one first.
