5 stars for Second Sight by Patricia D Eddy.
I don’t know if I have ever read a more realistic story about a soldier who suffers from PTSD than this one. It has taken me awhile to write this review. My husband suffers from PTSD, so this book hit a little close to home for me. Dax has survived being a prisoner of war. He lost his sight during this time and he also lost himself along the way. Evianna has struggled to maintain being the women on top in a male dominated field. When she has to fire someone who she considered one of her best coders, she hated it. Soon after she is being stalked. She is not sure why this is happening, but she decides to hire Dax’s private security company Second Sight. Dax feels something for Evianna from the very beginning. It has just been so long for him that he isn’t sure what he is feeling. It just grows and grows with the more time they spend together. The danger that Evianna is in is also growing. Can they save each other.
To me this book was not just a romance story. IT was as book about self-growth. About being comfortable with who you are and they things that have happened to you, I loved this book. I cried so many tears but it was still an amazing story. It was incredibly deep.
Well hello there Patricia D. Eddy! Where have you been hiding the last few years? How is Second Sight the first thing I’m reading from you? This book was a different kind of addictive. It was smart and dangerous and sexy. And from the heart stopping opening sequence, I was invested.
I liked that both Dax and Evianna were strong and smart individuals. Both at the top of their respective games. Both with a lot to prove. Both with a lot of people depending on them. Both with a lot of pride. Both with a lot to lose. Their first meeting was tense to say the least. Not that they should’ve been happy to have to meet at all, since Evianna is seeking help from Dax’s security firm.
With his team stretched thin, Dax has no choice but to step into Evianna’s security detail. He wasn’t looking forward to it, in fact, he was dreading it. But once they were spending time together, Dax couldn’t deny that there was something about Evianna that just called to him. Part of it was how hard she worked to understand and help him without taking away his masculinity. How she saw the man behind the scars. The other part of it was her strength and tenacity.
As Evianna and Dax grew closer, the danger facing Evianna continued to mount. I could feel it building and it was only a matter of time when it all came to a head. And when the big reveal, the mastermind behind all the mayhem, happened, I was as blindsided as Evianna. Wowza, the finale to Second Sight was intense, my heart was racing and I was hanging on the edge of my kindle. Patricia D. Eddy has a new fan and I can’t wait to go back and read more from her.
** spoiler alert ** Dax survived Hell, but is now struggling to overcome it. Evianna’s struggling with a stalker. Despite his limitations, will Dax be able to help keep her safe? Will Evianna be able to prove he is more than his disability?
LOVED this book. I didn’t blame either character for their reactions, but loved the fact that Evianna was determined to do whatever she could to prove Dax was worth it. I loved how Dax couldn’t help how he felt, despite the fact that he wanted to fight it. Great read!
It’s rare for me to read a book that I can barely put down but this is one of those books!
Second Sight is the 4th book in the series and my first book from this author.
It has has the components that I look for in the books I read: mystery, suspense, hot romance and angst. This book has all of that and more.
The book starts with a description of what Dax went through his dark times while being held captive. I appreciate the author not being graphic about this and definitely knew the show rather than tell in this manner. The author was actually on point about this matter throughout the entire book, the story was felt rather than “seen” (no pun intended). Fast forward to present Dax, blind and managing a private security company while trying to sort his friendships, relationships and himself. Enter Evianna, brilliant CIO on the verge of her company’s program launch when she get threats to her person. This was a highly stressful situation from the start and being threatened for your life was a compounded stress. The author did a brilliant balance for the female protagonist. She was no Mary Sue but was strong on her own while realizing she needed the help. I applaud the author for this which I think is very hard to balance in a romance book when there’s an Alpha male. Dax was also well written where you feel empathy for him (and not because he’s blind) but how he courageously dealt with his trauma, tried to adjust to his current situation and realize that his condition didn’t dictate his worth or who he was as a person. Although I was eager to know who was behind the threats, I enjoyed the focus more on the development of the couple’s relationship. There was certainly a hot chemistry between them even with the initial misunderstandings and distrust. But they worked through the relationship and on themselves. This also brought positive ripple effect on Dax’s relationship with his coworkers and friends.
Another side thing that I truly appreciated from this story is our “gift of sight”. It made me realize deeply that to be able to see, is something that we often take for granted. From being able to see dog poop and being able to avoid that to being able to distinguish between your vitamin bottle vs rat poison that can be a matter of life and death. Even being able to type this and read such a great book, is truly a gift. Thank you, Author!
Since this is book 4, I look forward to checking out the other books in her series. So happy to have found another author I could follow and support.
If you’re looking for an emotional read, great characters (including the females!) and good plot, give this book a try. You won’t regret it!
Whoa I seriously finished this in less than a day. I started it and felt so bad for Dax but then I thought about all he overcame, I felt proud of him. My heart still hurt for all he had endured but he takes control and tries to make it ok. Evianna is a coder and trying to launch a new system that will help thousands of people but she becomes a victim of a stalker/murderer so she seeks the help of Second Sight, Dax’s PI firm, to help protect her. They help her and try hard to protect her and slowly her and Dax come to need and love each other. This is a beautiful story of how a beautiful soul can help a damaged one by being nice, helpful, and loving.
Ok, cards on the table, I’m not ashamed to admit that this book made me cry. There I’ve said it. I don’t know what it is about Patricia’s writing but it just seems to get inside me and grab hold of me and wring all the emotion out of me. I just loved this book, it sucked me in from the start and didn’t let go. I know that it will take some time for these characters to leave me. This series just gets better with each book. I love the characters, so broken and so beautifully written. I want to get to know them further. I’m already looking forward to the next book. Can I give it more than 5 stars?
If you are looking for a book that sucks you in from the opening pages and locks you down to the very last page – look no further. Once again Patricia D. Eddy creates a world filled with intrigue, emotion and angst. Broken characters that can only be put back together again with love and understanding is a small glimpse of the entire Away from the keyboard series. Dax and Evianna are perfect for each other and I cannot wait to see where the next book takes us.
Second Sight: An Away from Keyboard Romantic Suspense Standalone
By: Patricia D. Eddy
Narrated by: Aiden Snow, Grace Grant
Romantic suspense is my favorite kind of listen and no one does it better than Patricia D Eddy. Second Sight has to be my favorite of Away From the Keyboard series and I will tell you why! Dax Halloway has started Second Sight after returning the civilian life. He is blind and has a slight limp, but this does not stop his elite investigative company from being successful. When he is approached by Eviana for protection, he finds himself drawn to her. But who wants a broken soldier? What a story! I could not stop listening. Dax is such a complex character. His darkness is his strength and it’s fresh and exciting getting to know him. Eviana is amazing. She is brilliant, beautiful and can see past Dax’s insecurities. The story is full of twists and turns, gives us cameos by characters past and lets us feel the thrills of the unknown. This is why I listen and can’t wait for the next in the series.
Aiden Snow and Grace Grant continue this series with their fantastic narration. Snow is incredible as Dax. His voice holds a roughness that lets us know his hardness, yet he is able to have that vulnerable tone so he gets our sympathy. Grant is spot on with her interpretation of Eviana. She has a confidence that emanates in her tone, giving her the strength she needs to get through so much. Then she can turn and flow the love through her voice so we know exactly what she is feeling. This is one of my favorite teams and will be watching for the next in the series.

Another great book. This is Dax’s story. I hate what happened to him when they blinded him in the Hell hole. But he has a security business now and gets around pretty well considering, but nothing will be the same. He meets Avainna, a coder, but someone is trying to do things with other than whats intended. Action, friends and love. HEA.
I could not put it down. Wanted to go farther with these characters and their friends.
This was my first time reading a book by this author and I couldn’t have been less disappointed.
Second Sight was absolutely phenomenal! The characters are amazing, the storyline is wonderful and it’s very well written.
Dax is an ex Special Forces Sergeant who barley survived H*LL when he was captured by the Taliban six years ago. Now he is the owner of Second Sight, an investigative firm, that may be Evianna’s only way to finding the truth and save her life.
Evianna is a coder about to launch her biggest project to date. She is caught in the middle of something she doesn’t understand and when things become dangerous and the police are unable to help she turns to Second Sight.
I fell in love with these characters and their story. This action packed page-turner kept me guessing from the very beginning. I never expected the outcome or Evianna’s true enemy’s identity.
I highly recommend this fun romance read and will definitely be checking out more books from this author.
I loved that the hero was different than most. Showing that a person with a so-called handicap can do just about anything they set their minds to.
This is an emotional story-line. Reading about a badly beaten man when he was a prisoner of war and how he recovered, is an amazing story. No doubt the author had to do some research in order get such “feeling” into the life of a blind person and what it meant to his life and employment. I totally enjoyed the technology used in order for a blind man to “see” in the fast pace of life as well as the understanding of those around him. Evianna was to become a large part of his life and I loved the interaction as she learned how to adjust to his sightless world. This book is exciting as well as fascinating.
This was a very good book. I could totally understand Dax’s issues with both his blindness as well as his internal scarring. The characters were well developed and I could feel the connection between them. I have already read the first book in this series as well to get a more thorough picture.
This is book 4 in the Away From Keyboard series and it features Dax and Evianna. Wow! This book was brilliantly written! The fact that Dax has been able to come this far out of the nightmare of his past and run this successful company at the same time, is amazing. Evianna is a brilliant coder and needs Dax to keep her alive and find out who’s after her and why. There is so much action, drama and deep, deep emotional discovery. What a ride!
Brilliant story line and characters! This is my first book in this series and I can’t wait to go back and read the first three. I also look forward to the next one.
This book blew me away. How Dax is portrayed is amazing. I love how he is figuring out the romance and friendship aspect to his life! Can’t wait for Ford’s story next.
Second Sight grabs hold of you from the very first paragraph and keeps you wanting more and more. This is a story with action from the start, drama, a touch of mystery and definitely suspense and love. Patricia D. Eddy really has a great writing ability, her words make this story and these characters come alive. The characters are smart, strong, courageous with a whole lot of heart. I can’t say enough about this fantastic story but since I don’t want to give anything away I will leave this by saying I absolutely love Special Forces Sergeant Dax Holloway who has survived the Tailban and the ever so brilliant coder Evianna Archer who is doing great until something or someone changes her life, these two will capture your heart and keep you hooked till the end. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book. loved so much I then turned around and bought.
The fourth book in the Away From Keyboard series and I just want to say read this book!! I think this is one of the best books that this Author has put out. If I could give it more than five stars I would. If you read I hope you like it as much as I did.
Overall Rating: 4.5 s
I have been subscribed to an ARC service for about a year, and I found Patricia Eddy through that service. I read her book, On His Six, and quickly fell in love with her story-telling. As is the case with someone like me who reads A LOT of books, I almost missed the release of the next book in the Away from Keyboard Collection, Second Sight. And I’ll be honest. I am incredibly thankful that I didn’t miss it. I have wanted Dax’s story, and Eddy created a story that quickly made him my favorite character within this series.
Second Sight is the story of Dax and Evianna. In On His Six, Ryker’s story, we meet Dax, Ryker’s best friend from his days in the military and a fellow POW survivor. Unfortunately, neither of them fared well back in the real world: Ryker hides from his friend and much of society and Dax, blinded during his captivity, hides behind work. Both of them struggle with their experience, and it has created problems in their friendship, namely Ryker’s absence from Dax’s life.
As the story begins, Dax is still reeling from Ryker’s re-entry into his life. He prefers to continue on as if nothing has changed, even though Ryker is making an effort to repair their friendship. However, Dax is struggling. Can he let Ryker back in?
Enter Evianna, a CIO for a tech company, preparing for the release of an industry-changing technology. This tech is her baby, and her life has revolved around its creation. Unfortunately, after firing one of her top employees, she finds herself threatened by him. After several frightening situations, she decides to hire Dax’s security company for protection. From the outset, Dax is drawn to Evianna. As the threats become more life-threatening to Evianna, Dax feels an innate need to protect her. In their time together, Dax and Evianna’s attraction grows, but Dax struggles with letting people into his life due to his disability and disfigurement from the months of torture as a POW. Will Dax allow Evianna into his heart? Will he recognize that she doesn’t see him as damaged or a burden? Will he let go of his past to find his future? Those are the questions of Eddy’s book.
If you asked me what I love most about Eddy’s writing, I would say her story-telling. Oftentimes with romance, the development of story is secondary to the chemistry of the characters or their $exual chemistry or even the character development itself. Eddy is a masterful story-teller. She absolutely knows how to create characters who move a story along. The depth of Dax’s character is the angst of this story. There is a moment in the Boston Arboretum that is essential to understanding the depth of Dax’s despair over his “brokenness.” Eddy crafts this moment to illustrate the significance of Dax’s worry over acceptance. She puts these words in Evianna’s voice: “This one’s…broken. Damaged. But it’s still beautiful. […] It fell, but …it still smells just as sweet as the rest.” It’s this quintessential moment in Eddy’s story that grabs the reader’s heart as the realization of Dax’s pain is evident. And at that moment, Dax too realizes he is not broken. He is simply a different version of an earlier self. You can’t help but read this part of the story and not feel goosebumps up your arms because Eddy makes you feel the heaviness and importance of it.
I think the other part of Eddy’s writing that I love beyond her storytelling is her willingness to allow her characters to fall in love without too much angst. There is usually a bit of a fight, but it is never prolonged, and the hero and heroine then work together to overcome the outside threat to their relationship. This happens in this book with Dax and Evianna. They are quick to become attracted, quick to realize their feelings, and fairly quick to fall in love. This is the power behind her stories; they are more than just romance. They are romantic suspense with more suspense than romance, in my opinion.
I’ll be honest. I couldn’t put Second Sight down. It has equal parts romance, action, and angst. It is driving and keeps you engaged throughout. Even better, the epilogue is EVERYTHING. I cannot wait for the next book in the series, By Lethal Force, Ford’s story. I read the Prologue for the next book, and all the qualities of Second Sight and On the Six are in it.
Read this book. You will definitely not regret it.
This is a great story.
There is suspense, danger, heat that increases and intensifies throughout. The book is also a love story.
A very emotional and wonderful read.
I received a free copy of this book via Hidden Gems and am voluntarily leaving a review.
