Recipient of a Kirkus starred review! A fun, rhyming story about acceptance and looking beyond outward appearances, from the author of the award-winning SANTA’S DOG series.Follow the adventures of Sam, an older dog adopted from an animal shelter whose new family lives next door to an old car junkyard. Confused at first by all the junk, Sam quickly adapts and helps visitors find special parts and … special parts and “treasures” and also becomes friends with a host of animals who’ve made the junkyard their forever home. See, treasures don’t have to be snazzy and new. This scruffy, old second-chance dog proves it’s true!
This sweet, unique story, written in verse with playful illustrations, will capture your heart as you share in Sam’s joy of finding friends, a purpose… and most importantly, love.
In addition to promoting recycling, SECOND-CHANCE SAM is a story about starting over and making new friends that children of all ages will cherish, as it gently reminds us to be thankful for what we have, not to judge a book by its cover, and that everyone deserves a second chance.
Perfect for ages 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.
Printed in the USA, this story advocates for the adoption of shelter dogs and the publisher supports animal rescue causes.

Really enjoyed this heartwarming and heartfelt little tale. A perfect addition to each child’s collection.
JoAnn is back with Second-Chance Sam: King of the Junkyard, another delightful book about rescue dogs. Sam is an older dog and has a bad leg, yet a man takes him home to a very nontraditional home.
JoAnn’s rhyming story is fun, full of humor and joy. The illustrations are delightful, colorful, and contain enough details to keep children coming back for more. I highly recommend this book and her previous one Santa’s Dog.
This is an adorable story for children and inspiring for anyone wishing for a new pet. JoAnn did a wonderful job, giving you a fun sweet story.
Edit: I brought the book to our local library and the Children’s Librarian read it to a small group of children. They were engaged and seemed to love Sam’s story. Two were quietly listening and responding when LaKendra, the librarian would ask questions to them. One was very animated and she asked a lot of questions about the story and the pictures. It was fun to watch.
A nice little poem about an older, unwanted dog that is ultimately adopted, but more than that it is a story about looking past superficial appearances to find true friends.
Grand daughter read it herself several times…Would make a great birthday or Christmas gift…
Wonderful story. I and my grandsons really enjoy reading it!
My granddaughter and grandson loved this book. Sam was a dog with a bad leg. He was an older dog who was always passed over. He dreamed of being adopted. The old man saw Sam and said that they would be a good match because he has a cane. He took Sam home. Sam helped him in the junkyard. Sam really loved helping people. He made friends. A turtle, skunk, an owl plus 2 brother rats. The story was wonderful and the illustrations was beautiful. Five star read
Perhaps no one wanted him at the shelter because he has a crooked leg, has a limp and is a little older. Here comes a man with a limp and a cane. He took the dog home. He was hoping for a yard, but he got a rusty car lot/junk yard. Sometimes things aren’t what they seem. What did they do together? What fun did they have??
This is a fun storybook. Your kiddos will love watching the animals and listening/reading this easy to understand story.
I borrowed this book on a Kindle Unlimited website and so can you
