A nice, romantic easy read, feel good romance. Will circumstances from the past make it impossible to have a future with the one you love? Will Miles and Raina get a second chance to have the love they each need and want? A book you won’t want to put down. So grab your favorite reading spot, curl up and enjoy this book. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for leaving a review.
Miles has done whatever it takes to stay away from home for the last decade plus. He joined the Marines, stayed out of contact with just about his whole family and traveled the world. All to avoid the reality of who is family is or was. His father was a drug supplier to the majority of the people in his hometown community. He is ashamed and angry and wants nothing to do with his father, then or now. His one regret is walking away from his best friend Raina all those years ago.
Raina has loved Miles since she was about 10 years old. He was her best friend, true confidant and she thought they would conquer the world together. Until the day after she expressed an interest in him, she woke up to find him gone from her life without a word.
Miles returns home finally and finds his father has had a stroke and is basically paralyzed. His brothers have found love and started families of their own and his sister is still living life to the fullest. When Alex tells him of their father’s request to check on Raina and her father (their dad’s oldest friend), Miles wants to handle that himself. He can’t help the draw he feels toward Raina, even all these years later.
Raina has moved on with her life, she is a teacher, raising her 2 half siblings and trying to date. She never expects to see the one person she has both thought about and hated consistently for the past decade. He walks back into her life like he never left, thinking he has some say over it. She is more confused than ever and fights a battle of wanting to run into his arms, or slap him across the face.
Raina and Miles have obstacles to overcome as well as a family dynamic that is less than stellar on either side. Will Miles’ father have the last say over their happiness? Or will a new companion threaten their future together? You’ll have to pick up a copy to find out. 4 out of 5 stars for this book in the Turning Good series. I voluntarily read an advance ready copy without expectation; all opinions are my own. While I felt the ending (epilogue) was a little abrupt, I’m assuming the next in the line will be Sadie and Caleb’s story which I am looking forward to. Caleb seems like an interesting character for sure. Don’t worry if you haven’t read the other books in the series, each is pretty standalone and you won’t be lost.
Miles Denton and Raina Jones have been friends since they were 8 years old. Brought together by their fathers who were in business together on the South Side of Chicago. Their business is drugs, unbeknownst to their families. The Denton children and Raina are left heartbroken when Mrs. Denton, who took Raina under her wing because she had no mother of her own, takes her own life because she can’t stand the guilt over how her family has made their money. Miles wants nothing to do with his father and on his 18th birthday, without a word to anyone, leaves home to join the Marines. The Denton family decides to get out of the drug business and move to the North Side of Chicago and they start a reputable business in real estate, leaving Raina and her family behind. When Raina’s father is shot and killed she swears to stay away from the Denton family forever. Twelve years after Miles leaves, he returns to Chicago and on the request of his older brother Alex, goes to see Raina to see how her father is doing. This request comes down from Alex’s father who wants to know how his old friend is doing. She is furious with him and wants nothing to do with him. Except that she loves him, she always has. Miles has always loved Raina too but never said anything and felt that leaving was the best thing he could do for her. Fighting their own feelings and each other, they come together, fall apart and come together again. Though the road is rough, they finally find themselves where they were always meant to be, in each other’s arms. A great heartfelt and emotional story! I highly recommend this book to anyone who believes in second chances.

In Second Chance Ex-Marine we get to revisit the Denton family. This is a standalone book so if you haven’t read the previous books you won’t be lost. Raina & Miles have been best friends since childhood but when their eyes are opened to what their respective fathers are doing, Miles leaves without Raina and joins the military. This is a story of Miles and Raina meeting again after 12 years and attempting to deal with everything that happened in that 12-year gap, while also trying to deal with the struggles of today and regaining their friendship and adult feelings for each other. An excellent read full of emotion, excitement, and intrigue.
I really enjoyed the storyline in this book. Along with the characters. It was a very easy and enjoyable story to read. There was plenty to keep me interested throughout the whole book. I look forward to reading more by this author.
Raina and Mikes were best friends growing up. Until he suddenly took off one night twelve years ago, and never heard from until he’s surprise back in town.
The two have a great chemistry anddetermination. Can they overcome the obstacles that keep getting in their way?
His father is a major issue. A must read.
