Denton and Mati and Chris were the three musketeers growing up, inseparable and fiercely loyal. Despite promises made while teenagers, Denton ran off to follow his dreams of rock stardom, leaving his friends and his heart in Georgia. Now he must return to his hometown to be with his family during a very trying time. Mati and Chris went on to live a happy life with their family until Chris is taken from this life abruptly, leaving behind a letter for his wife and one for Denton?! Will Denton’s return to Georgia bring answers or just more heartbreak? I was not sure I was going to like Denton, but as always, L.B. Dunbar’s characters have a knack of working their way into my heart.

A standing ovation for LB to continuously break the romantic couple preset mold and write meaningful, real love stories about people over 40. It’s a courageous achievement which in itself deserves acknowledgement and accolades.
Fantastic job LB and keep going, we need more authentic stories like this, with real day problems in real situations. It’s so refreshing to see mature characters behaving in a sensible way.
If this story had a relationship status, it’d be – IT’S COMPLICATED!!!
“Seems complicated has come a-knocking, Mati. Time to jump at the net,”
This entire series has been fantastic but This One is outstanding amongst it all.
It’s a Double second chance romance, in the sense that its a second chance for BOTH Mati Harrington-Rathstone as much as it is for Denton Chance. The trio of Chris, Mati’s husband, Denton & Mati were thick as thieves since childhood. They grew up together, experienced teenage pangs together and fell in love together.
Fate separates their ways abruptly and as it happens when hearts aren’t cleanly cut apart, but pulled away. strings get stretched, jagged edges take shape and lingering hostilities occupy empty space. Chris marries Mati and they live happily ever after and Denton…..well he becomes a rockstar and a photog model.
Three souls separated, strive to live but emptiness comes claiming them back
God, I’m tired, I think as I consider the journey my life has taken. Rockstar. Photographer. Model. It isn’t that I don’t have a good life, but I’m tired all the same.
The Prodigal Son returns home.
I’ll be barreling backward in time—a ride in reverse—and I’m curious how much of the past remains.
Things have changed a lot, people have moved on, houses have become dilapidated, land has been overrun by weeds and friends are struggling to survive. But as is in small towns, gossip is still alive and flourishing.
He followed his heart from the start, but my journey has been twists and turns on a different path leading to this point. The road well-traveled.
It’s a beautiful story, THE BEST of the entire series in my opinion. The yearning and pining adds to the thrill of pulsating passions. Denton is at the center of the maelstrom that hits Blue Ridge in Georgia. And he brings his buddies back too who we met in earlier books.
I loved the sensitivity of the sentiments, the authority of Mati’s character. She’s no shrinking violet and carries herself beautifully, putting her sons in place and the entire town for that matter. The ending just blew me away. It’s a subtle power shift and the understated turn of events strengthen the placing of women in the story. LB has made the heroine strong TILL THE VERY END and for that alone this book deserves an extra mark.
“My whole life, I’ve given up things. My volleyball scholarship,My college education when I got pregnant. Then my body to my boys. Motherhood. Working for the pub. I’m not begrudging any of those decisions or circumstances. I wouldn’t trade most of them, but it’s also my time.”
Strong characters, precise storyline, right amount of intrigue, passion and sensuality. One thing I want to mention, after a long time I’ve read some great kissing scenes. Generally it’s sex that the focus of romance but LB uses kisses to convey sentiments at different points of the story. I loved it.
I’m-afraid-I’ll-never-feel-again-how-I-feel-with-you
Great enjoyable read
5 stars for Mati & the Minivan
Holy WOW!! I see you Denton. I see you. You sexy beast! Just when I think L.B. can’t top her last sexy silver fox, what does she do? She tops him! You wonderful lady are a sexy silver fox writing superwoman!!! You slay me with your beautiful, emotional, raw and sexy words! I absolutely loved every single thing and every feeling and emotion I felt about Mati & Denton’s story from page 1 until the last. Denton is so sexy and OMG that mouth on him! Nothing truly worth having is ever easy and their reunion was anything but easy at first given their past. They have an amazing connection from their past and unstoppable chemistry now but so much baggage to sort through. I love Mati, she is fierce! Have I mentioned how sexy Denton is? They both want to take that “second chance” and trust me, once they jump in, they are ALL IN. This over 40 series is quickly becoming one of my favorites. 5 + amazing stars!!!!
A show of hands; who wants to move to Blue Ridge, Georgia? If you didn’t raise your hands, you will after you read this book. Meet Denton Chance (I’m swooning and sweating thinking about my new book boyfriend ) Denton is a hot silver fox former rock star. He returns home to help his sister with their terminally ill mom. Denton also unfinished business and unresolved issues with his one true love Mati (Harrington) Rathstone. Mati was (and still is) beautiful, independent and a free spirited female. Mati is now the local high school volleyball coach and helps with her family’s brewery/restaurant. She was the “the one that got away”. Mati is a widow and letter that was left by her husband (mutual/former best friend of Denton) will change her life forever. Denton is instantly drawn back to Mati and he can’t stop thinking of all the insatiable things he wants to do to her. This second chance romance will pull your heart strings and will have you fanning yourself because the words are blazing hot!!! Another amazing book for L B Dunbar!!!
A review is supposed to be honest right? Well honestly there were times (many) when I was yelling at Mati & Denton … Screaming “How can you be so obtuse?” only to read the next chapter that was written from the other’s perspective and reminded this is one of the reasons I love this author, she not only pulls the reader into yelling at their kindle, she reminds us of our own human nature & tendencies. If you’re looking for roses & sugar plums, this isn’t your next read. This is story that spans 27+ years, and makes the reader feel every anguish, every triumph, and also makes the reader question which feelings warrant guilt and which are ok. Mati & Denton grew up best of friends with Chris. They loved each other unconditionally, which means when 1 asks you to sacrifice yourself, your heart, your soul – you do it, even it kills you inside & wounds another. A series of tragic events put 2 of them in back in the same town. Their past is filled with so many memories, so many emotions, but guilt, regret & secrets weigh heavily. Will either of them reveal them to the other? If they do – are they forgivable? Will the ghost of the one who died prove to add to their guilt or persuade them to embrace all of their secrets?
L.B. Dunbar’s Romance for the Over 40 series is the best thing that ever happened to the book world. All of the couples she writes about are full of love, hope and dreams that a special someone may be right around the corner, or right in front of them. While I was reading “Second Chance”, my emotions ran from happy and sad to hopeful and uncertain. Mati and Denton’s memories of the past were so powerful that it was hard to work through them and plan for the future. As with all of her books, L.B. writes with passion and her words are a gift that we will never forget.
Denton never stopped loving Mati and she had been in his heart since the day he left. He will always remember how she calmed him down and took care of him after his father had beaten him. She was a beacon of light in his hours of darkness. The road trip they were going to take was their dream, but dreams don’t always come true. Denton never said goodbye and had not reached out to Mati after all these years. Their paths went in different directions at 18 but at 45, Mati and Denton collided at full speed on a bumpy road.
Denton thought that he wanted and needed to continue modeling so he could receive accolades from the public. He realized that after reuniting with Mati, her love and acceptance was all he could ever want. His home in California was no longer calling to him because he was home, and it was wherever Mati wanted it to be. She was his future as well as the best part of his past.
I had to sleep on this book last night before I could review….because I don’t think I can find the right words to convey on how this book made me feel. It made me laugh, it made me CRY, it had me falling in love with love again…not just in the “I love my family” way either. L.B. has knocked this one out of the park for this series so if you love feeling like you are in the book, friends with the characters and going on their walk of life then you will want to grab this one!!!!
