When leaving is just the beginning… The long-awaited novel of family, love and learning to be kind to yourself by award-winning, bestselling Irish author, Aimee Alexander.
Grace Sullivan flees Dublin with her two teenage children, returning to the sleepy West Cork village where she grew up. No one in Killrowan knows what Grace is running from – or that she’s even running. She’d like to keep it … even running. She’d like to keep it that way.
Taking over from her father, Des, as the village doctor offers a very real chance for Grace to begin again. But will she and the children adapt to life in a small rural community? Can she live up to the doctor her father was? And will she find the inner strength to face the past when it comes calling?
Season of Second Chances is Grace’s story. It’s also the story of a community that chooses the title “Young Doctor Sullivan” for her before she even arrives. It’s the story of Des, who served the villagers all his life and now feels a failure for developing Parkinson’s disease. And it’s the story of struggling teens, an intimidating receptionist, a handsome American novelist escaping his past, and a dog called Benji who needs a fresh start of his own.
Season of Second Chances is a heart-warming story of friendship, love and finding the inner strength to face a future that may bring back the past.
Perfect for fans of Call The Midwife, Virgin River, Doc Martin, The Durrells and All Creatures Great and Small. The villagers of Killrowan will steal into your heart and make you want to stay with them forever.

It was hard to pick out the words above that are to describe this book, because being realistic, it has a smattering of almost all of them.
I loved this brave story of a young doctor in Dublin who leaves her abusive, doctor husband. She has carefully planned ahead how to go about it. Then, along with her two teenage children, she returns to her small, country town of Killrowan. They move in with her father and the adjustment for all is not easy, but bit by bit they do it. Will the angry father/husband find them and re-enter their lives? This tension is an undercurrent that keeps an element of suspense going.
Do read it! It is tenderly written and the reader keeps “pulling” for her and her children throughout. Karla
I received this book in advance in return for an honest review,
Very enjoyable read with interesting characters. I wanted to ride on the ferry all day long. I could be best friends with Grace in a flash.
This book is uplifting because fresh starts and good friends can change everything.
I loved the dialect and the story. It was not what I expected but I loved it anyway
I loved this book, the characters are so believable, I couldn’t put it down. I’m looking forward to the sequel already. A film would be wonderful!
Village life at its best and worst, characters that you will love and sometimes hate, tragic subject beautiful handled. It will make you cry and laugh out loud. Leave you wanting more.
Praises to Aimee Alexander’s new book ‘Season of Second Chances’! Her book was so rich in character depth, you live through their actions. My favorite interactions, call me a romantic, are between Young Dr Grace Sullivan and the author Wayne Hill. Their banter between them is witty, charming, warm and real. What joy!
Ever since I read my first book by Ms. Alexander, she quickly became one of my favorite authors. Her books are not only sensitively written, but she has the ability to develop characters as real as the readers’ own circle of family and friends. “Season of Second Chances” is about the fear of separating from a narcissistic spouse, the frustrations and joys of returning home to a small village, and worries about the effect on Grace’s two teenage children. At first the children have a big adjustment leaving Dublin and settling in the village, although they bloom and gain objectivity from the time spent in their new environment and with their loving grandfather. Although the ending is excellent, I sincerely hope there will be a sequel.
