I honestly don’t even know how to describe how amazingly different this book is. I have read lots of historical romances and Sea of Ruin is unlike anything that I have ever read before. Pam Godwin is well known for her dark romances and this book has a lot of darkness but it is loaded with so much hope as well. I first met Bennett Sharp in King of Libertines. It was an excellent prequel and should not be missed. This takes place over two years later and she has a secret marriage to another pirate, Priest Farrell that is unknown to anyone. He has been searching for her and when he finds her, he’s determined to win her forgiveness over his betrayal. Bennett is not a woman to lay down and accept heartbreak. She’s a pirate captain for goodness sake! Priest has taken something very precious from her and she’s determined to get it back no matter the cost. Everything goes awry when she is taken prisoner by Lord Ashley Cutler. This man has so many layers that you may think that you know who he is and what he wants but you’ll never see this ending coming! Never!!! Sea of Ruin was told from Bennett’s POV. It is wicked, violent, raw, emotional and not for the faint of heart but should not be missed. Buckle up for this one because it is 5 lusty stars!
Wow, what an experience this was, an epic masterpiece through and through… mesmerising, enchanting, unputdownable… so very different from Pam’s other dark romance books, and I’ve read them all, this was stunning in a way I wasn’t expecting!!
I was on the fence about reading this one, a historical romance (I have only read a couple and don’t do well with them) and to top it off it’s a pirate read, I was like ‘meh….’, but this is Pam and I love her stuff, so decided to chance my arm!!! Honestly I am blown away with this one, it’s quite a long read, but I can’t say as I noticed as I was so immersed in the book!!!
What a heroic female lead character Pam has created here, I loved Bennett Sharp with a passion!! The daughter of a famous pirate and an English Noblewoman, two worlds that should never have collided. She didn’t have the best upbringing, shunned and cast out of society, raised by a stern mother, her only respite was the rare secret visit from her father, whom she adored. Due to a horrid circumstance and twist of fate she ends up being a Pirate Captain of her own ship. She is loved by her crew and there is nothing she wouldn’t do for them. But she ends up being captured by the Royal Navy and in the hands of one the most handsome, cold, unemotional and feared commanders in the Navy, Lord Ashley Cutler. I have never read a more intense battle of wills in all my life!!!!
I went into this blind and suggest you do the same, so no further details from me!! If you’ve read some of Pam’s other books you know what to expect from her as a rule, this is no less dark, violent and gritty. It is an intense read, mesmerising, dark, captivating…. raw, erotic and mind blowing!! It’s a stunning read with the most wonderful characters you just can’t get enough of!!! The detail in the writing is beautiful and captivating at times, harrowing and emotional at others, but completely immersive, I felt I was there with them!!
Trust me on this one, this is a must read for anyone, even if like me historical romance is not your thing, this should not be missed. The story is unique and spell binding, one of the best reads of this year for me, I didn’t want to put it down or for it to end!!!
All the pirate RRR’s included & roiling emotion – a truly spectacular read to savor
—>>> “Love isn’t a decision. It arrives unannounced, breeds madness, and leaves a sea of ruin in its wake. Hate him or love him. Either way, he’s in certain hell.” ~ Commodore and Lord Ashley Cutler
This story, which we get a good taste of in the preview KING OF LIBERTINES, continues thankfully in these pages, where we follow Bennett’s search for love to call her own and her father’s craftily hidden spoils. Having run from Priest after a devastating truth comes to light, Bennett’s time runs out when she finds one of her most treasured items taken for ransom by none other than Priest two years later. But in the midst of that negotiation, the tables are turned and flipped until she finds herself at the mercy of yet another stunning, intimidating, and controlling man, the Commodore of the HMS Blitz, Lord Ashley Cutler. Bennett cannot hide much under his razor-sharp scrutiny, and Ashley cannot help but fall hard under the spell of this Pirate Queen and slowly lose the iron grip on his control. Cunning plans are not all Bennett has to rely on to save her from what is yet to come, but her undying faith and love for all the men in her life coupled with her indomitable spirit may be just enough to pull her through and refashion her into something stronger when her life is put through precarious trials time and time again.
This tale contains all the pirate RRR’s (riches, rogue, relentless, rescue, ruthless, romanticize, and more) and roiling emotion – a truly spectacular read to savor!
This book was easily Pam Godwin’s best to date. The woman has a magical way with words. I was desperate for an escape after being unable to travel for months, and Pam delivered. I thoroughly enjoyed the rich language and terminology that comes with the life of a pirate, and could imagine the story played out on the big screen. No one can tell a dark, twisted love story like Pam Godwin. This one did not disappoint.
I’m not done reading it yet, but holy freaking hell! My mouth is watering, my blood is boiling, and my sanity just went out the window. I knew going into this that it would be a fantastically written book no matter what the content. Pam Godwin takes her time with her writing, she pays attention to EVERY detail and this one is off the charts! More to come when I’m done!
It’s taken me a day or two to put my thought together on Sea of Ruin…so here goes, the good, the bad and the ugly.
The good…not just good spectacular. I’m out on the open sea, the swell of the ocean makes me sway side to side as the salt air mist covers my face and dampens my hair. The sky is an ombre of indigo, violet and orange reflecting off every cloud and surrounding surface, as the sun sets over the horizon. I hear the wind snap at the main sail and Jade groan as her planks endure the swell of the waves. I smell gunpowder and sweat and hear the screech of the gulls over head…I am Bennett Sharp.
Yes, I was there. The imagery was truly awe-inspiring!
The bad…yes, there was some. I’m not a new reader to Pam Godwin’s work so I know she writes it dark, but some of the brutality in this story, granted it’s the time period, so keep that in mind, will be unnerving to some readers. So read the trigger warnings and take those to heart. I’m not going into details because spoilers, but be advised.
That said there was some drag in the storyline for me as well, so I’m lumping that here under the bad.
And now the ugly…I’m kind of in awe of this ugly…to say the author did her research would be a total understatement. I was teleported not only into the beautiful imagery, but into the greed and debauchery of that brutally, dark pirate era. Murder, greed, lies, betrayal, survival…the list goes on. To say I didn’t imagine all of that as deeply as I did the beauty would be a lie, simply phenomenal.
Sea of Ruin gets a little ding from me, because I’m an avid reader and I love the dark, but even I have to draw the line occasionally and some things happened that even pushed my “oh, hell no” button. Just a personal thing for me and should not deter anyone from reading this adventure if you’re ok in the dark.
Truth be told I was hoping for a little more swashbuckling adventure, but the fascinating twists to the story and the pure joy of the escape into another time will have you wondering about Bennett, Priest and Ashley for a very long time.
Historical pirates not your thing? Trust me, these are…I recommend you don’t pass this one by.
“Love isn’t a decision. It arrives unannounced, breeds madness, and leaves a sea of ruin in its wake.”
Holy Freaking Amazeballs Batman! Sea of Ruin is easily my favorite book of 2020. It was unputdownable. It was a daunting read, a whole heap of pages, no shortchanging whatsoever.
There is a very good reason I’m constantly drawn to Pam Godwin’s books. She never ceases to entertain me. Sea of Ruin is full of amazing words. Spectacular words, and feels, and characters.
But be forewarned. Pam Godwin doesn’t write rainbows and unicorns, unless the rainbow is sodomizing someone at the end of a rainbow or has one bent over the pot of gold while tanning an a$$. There is non-consensual sex (rape). There is cheating. There is beating, pillaging, murder, and mayhem. I personally believe all of that is intrinsic to the beauty of this story, but either way none of those things could keep me away. They are what MAKES this story. They add that extra depth, that formidable dimension that the characters have to battle and overcome. Those things I warn you about are what makes this story memorable, what makes Sea of Ruin a story like no other, a story so profound. That Bennett, Priest, and Lord Cutler all had to go through what they did to have the life they’d want to live. Make no mistake, there’s plenty of spankings and sex, but it’s secondary to the amazing story line. To the phenomenal flow of words, wants, and desires. The wonderful characters, their past and their future. I ramble because I want you to know just how impressive this book is. Just how amazing. I can’t seem to stress enough just how much you should read this story.
Sea of Ruin by Pam Godwin is an EPIC historical pirate romance that sailed right to the top of my 2020 favorite books!!!!
I am a big fan of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and absolutely love historical romance, but those great movies nor any historical romance that I’ve read can compare to this dark riveting, exhilarating, unforgettable historical pirate romance that is a treasure to be read and re-read and read again and again!!!!
The characters are strong and fierce and hold nothing back when it comes to who or what they love, the story is dark and gritty and sexy and breathtaking, from beginning to end I was captivated by every detail and swept away on a SEA OF RUIN with Bennett, Priest, and Ashley!!!!
A unique one of kind historical pirate romance that I absolutely LOVED!!!!!
After reading the novella, King of Libertines (the beginnings of Priest and Bennett’s love story), I wondered how Priest Farrell, the womanizing pirate, and Bennett Sharp, the strongest, ruthless female pirate in the 1700s, could maintain a relationship in this cutthroat world. Well, I never expected this romance to turn so raw and gritty. It reminded me of historical romances I used to read in the past, especially my favorite stories where women fought as strongly as they loved in a time where it would have been considered scandalous.
Bennett Sharp is a strong woman that can handle anything life hands her, and her world is beyond cruel, but only one man (or maybe two) can shred her heart and soul apart. The men in her life are extremely cruel and careless with Bennett’s life and love. There were scenes that really made me cringe, especially during Bennett’s moments of capture. Bennett may be weakened, but she never gives up.
Priest Farrell plays a cat and mouse role in this story, following Bennett in the hopes of reclaiming something from the past. I’m glad I read King of Libertines first so that I could understand why Bennett was so tortured by Priest’s mere presence. Their love story is not what I expected, but I loved every surprising moment.
5 BRILLIANT STARS!!
This epic exhilarating dark romance, is a must read powerfully evocative, and absolutely impossible to put down. You are going to love it!!
Was super excited to hear a favorite author was writing a pirate book. I read the prequel, so was already chomping at the bit for the continuation of Bennett and Priest’s story, and it didn’t disappoint. I thought I knew what to expect…but NO! It had the dark and gritty moments I expect from a PG book, plus the romance, but there are still twists. Loved the unexpected addition of Ashley, and how their relationship develops. All 3 of them are amazing, and loved reading another strong main heroine. If you loved Black Sails, you’ll love this book.
Pam Godwin is one of my favorite authors, and for good reason. Book after book, her storytelling ability outdoes itself, and this story was no exception. This is one of my top 2020 favorite reads, and I think it’s my favorite book by her. In Sea of Ruin, she paints such a vivid, elegant, deliciously decadent picture that made me wish I could transport back in time and be a pirate. This story was sexy historical perfection, and I was swooning like crazy over Bennett, Priest, and Ashley. Their story is gripping, dark, and emotional, and I could. Not. Put. It. Down. So, so good. I LOVE a strong female lead, and Bennett delivers on all fronts. This book is bursting with excellent writing, intriguing characters, beautiful details, and masterful storytelling.
Before reading this, I was on the fence, historical romances aren’t my thing, but if they are all like this one- I’m hooked! Bennett Sharp has surpassed all other female characters as my favorite. She is one spicy girl and BRAVE! This book takes Bennett on the adventure of a lifetime, an adventure that goes down some very dark paths. I was holding my breathe hoping she came out the other side, the were points in the story I wasn’t sure what would happen. Then there are the men: Priest, who holds her heart and Ashley, who holds her life in his hands. An affair caused Bennett to turn her back on Priest, will they find their way back together. But wait…..at the last minute there is a HUGE twist. I get it, historical romances aren’t your thing either, but I’m telling you, this one is worth you diving in and riding the high seas. You won’t be sorry!
When I found out that Ms.Godwin was releasing a new book I could not contain my excitement for it! Just like when I first read the synopsis, this story grabbed my attention so quickly and didn’t let go! This was such a unique read and I loved how I didn’t want to turn away from my kindle!
4.5 stars
Years of hard work earned Bennett Sharp her place in the open sea. As a female pirate captain, she had a fair share of difficulties but none compared to being hunted by two ruthless men. Priest Farrell and Lord Ashley Cutler came from the opposite sides of the society but with a singular mission: to get Bennett under their clutch before she slipped away.
Bennett was such a full-rounded character. I loved her sass and her tenacity, which nicely balanced by her vulnerabilities. Both Priest and Ashley had their own brand of appeals and all three of them had amusing interactions.
For a man who didn’t express his feelings, he could enslave a woman’s emotions through language alone.
The story was highly entertaining with non-stop actions. I loved how the author didn’t hold back in portraying the situation the characters thrown into. And if course, the author’s signature “sexual deviancy” was on point.
Sea of Ruin is a swashbuckling tale of ambitions and devotions. It would appeal to readers who enjoy a romantic adventure of the open sea.
Sea of Ruin by Pam Godwin is just a spellbinding, complex and breathtaking story. It’s a magical, unique, beautiful, entertaining and enthralling piece that will take you on a journey- Ashley, Bennett and Priest’s story is a journey that every reader should go on! Without giving anything away, this book is simply breathtaking and just full of feels, danger, mayhem, magic, intrigue, passion and action!! But it’s so much more!! Y’all need to experience Sea of Ruin!! Such a amazing read!!
My Rating: 4.7 stars *******
I was so excited when I found out that Pam Godwin was writing a new book. You can always count on her to write a page-turner full of heat, excitement, and twists that you don’t see coming. Sea of Ruin is an original story that was truly a pleasure to read. This story is one I won’t soon forget. I highly recommend this book along with everything that this author writes!
Bennett is a woman determined to make her way in a man’s world. She isn’t afraid of much except for Priest Farrell. He is hunting her to the ends of the earth. Priest is a cold, ruthless criminal and so tempting. Bennett is captured by pirate hunter Lord Ashley Cutler. Ashley is the exact opposite and rigid with rules and obeying the law. She could never have a life with such a man. Two strong, handsome alpha males to choose from for Bennett. I loved this dark historical romance.
Blow Me Down……I absolutely LOVED this book. It was an EPIC historical pirate romance that completely captured me and never let me go. Pam Godwin wrote a dark, brutal, passionate tale that was gut wrenching as much as it was an adventurous exotic swashbuckling saga.
Bennett Sharp is a fierce heroine. The daughter of an infamous pirate and a British noblewoman, the sea is where her heart lies. She is loyal, strong, witty and sexually liberated. To be a woman pirate is no easy feat especially because of her past and who her father was. She commands her ship, her crew and her destiny.
Priest Farrell is King of Libertines and he is scrumptious. He’s passionate, snarky, sexy and lives his life carefree until he meets Bennett. His devotion and love for her is of magnific proportions and only makes his sexier.
Lord Ashley Cutler is the commodore of the HMS Blitz of the British Royal Navy and a pirate hunter. He is a confident, no show of emotion, regimented man who is also cunning and heartless. And did I mention he’s also sexy and mysterious!!
There is so much to this saga. It is filled with many layers that all eventually come together. Does the past of Bennett, Priest and Ashley put them on a trajectory to all meet? Their journey is deep and compelling. The hunter, the captor and the rescuer all weave this story to heights of savagery, passion, darkness and love. Life on the high seas is not for the faint of heart and this author leaves no stone unturned in telling this tale. It’s grimy, gritty and at times, it’s a punch to the gut, but it is also filled with raw compassionate emotions that endears your heart.
I recommend this book to lovers of romance no matter the genre. It’s filled with encompassing love, devotion and passion on the high seas. I loved every minute of this read and hated to see it end but at the same time but it filled my monotonous days with an invigorating, lively, heart wrenching sensual tale. A favorite of 2020 for sure
5 Stars!
Bennett Sharp is the daughter of a notorious pirate and an English countess who loses everything at the age of fourteen. She’s forced to choose her path in life which is plagued by danger and hopeless, impossible situations. She’s a bold, fierce, rebellious, determined force to be reckoned with. She’s untamed beauty with a spirit that can’t be broken. She ignores the rules, and follows her heart. She’d never been a woman who depended on a man to save her, but fought hard for her freedom, and was prepared to die for what she loved.
Bennett lived among men fighting for every inch of respect in a man’s world. She meets her match in two very different men who make her feel something frighteningly real. One man is a cold blooded, ruthless, intoxicatingly intense, unnerving, devastatingly beautiful criminal who could touch every part of her without laying a finger on her. The other man is a rude, hardened, disciplined, confident, stunningly gorgeous, career driven rule follower who lives a spiritless existence of conformity. She could never live with the tedious rigid order of his life. One man is a libertine, and the other a pirate hunter. Each man was relentless in their pursuits, and claimed a piece of her. They clouded her judgment, and became essential to her. Unlikely bonds form, and soon things are extremely complicated as lines are blurred. To give up on them would mean giving up on herself, but in the end will love prevail over secrets, and broken promises?
Sea of Ruin by Pam Godwin is an all consuming, enemies to lovers dark historical romance about three passionate warriors who all belong to the sea. It’s a unique story about fate, love, survival, betrayal, loyalty, sinful pleasure, undeniable connections, and sensual, forbidden desires. It’s a captivating tale with a strong, uninhibited woman who knows her worth, and fights for what she wants. I adored everything about Bennett and this amazing book! This is an original, magical story that will take you away to another world. I couldn’t put it down!
