Loved every minute of this hot pirate love triangle! It was off-the-charts STEAMY!!!
I cut my romance reading teeth on authors like Johanna Lindsey, Julie Garwood, and Beatrice Small who are all renowned for their steamy, historical romances. And whether I burned myself out on the genre or just found that I liked much darker elements in my books as I got older, I moved away from books of this elk. After more than 15 years of reading primarily dark and contemporary romances I delved into historical romance once again on a whim with Sea of Ruins by the incredibly talented Pam Godwin.
If you’ve never had the pleasure of reading Pam’s work, I implore you to pick any book she’s written. I’ve yet to talk to any readers who’ve found her stories to be less than a 5-Star read—but be forewarned, she writes a little darker and sexier than some might be prepared for. Also, it should be noted that at times, her work might hold triggers for some readers. When I bought Sea of Ruins, I honestly was just supporting an author that I utterly love and I wasn’t sure I was going to read it because I’ve moved away from historical romances. Still, the cover and my love for the author’s storytelling compelled me to sit down one night and dive into Sea of Ruin and I. AM. STUNNED! Sea of Ruins is utterly PHENOMENAL. Without a doubt one of my top reads this year and if I’m being perfectly frank, one of the best books I’ve read in several years.
Sea of Ruins is a super sexy, love triangle, dark, historical romance told entirely from the heroine’s perspective. It’s unlike any historical romance I’ve ever read and completely underrated with the 5-stars I’ve given it to be sure. Pam Godwin paints a picture that is unquestionably based in fact and history. The realism of her story highlights the factual aspects of piracy, the slave trade, unjust and unequal expectations placed on women in history and so much more… Yet, Sea of Ruin also illustrates an elegant and erotic romance that is without a doubt one-of-a-kind.
Pam Godwin pens a dark, erotic masterpiece. Sea of Ruin is exceptional in every way including an evocative prose I found riveting, authentic vocabulary, an endlessly entertaining plot and outstanding characters. The plot had me so wrapped up that before I knew it the sun was rising, and I had another 15% of the story to finish. Sea of Ruin’s storyline is the very embodiment of brilliance. Pam delivers a breathtaking and a fast-paced story that’s deliciously dark. It straddles the line between brutal and magnificent while also offering readers a depth that is often overlooked in modern storytelling. The characters were every bit as compelling as the storyline and I couldn’t have loved them more. The heroine, Bennett, is torn between two men—the King of Libertines, the ‘feral’ Priest Farrell and her pirate hunter, Lord Ashley Cutler. For a historical romance, the love triangle was not only unique but five alarm fire sexy. The sexy times in this book will leave you in desperate need of charged batteries or your S.O.—or both!!!
Whatever your reading, set it aside! One-click Sea of Ruin and settle in for one of the best stories you’ll read this year…perhaps in the next several years!
A unique and exhilarating tale!! I was hooked on this story from page 1!! Sea of Ruin is unlike anything that I have read in the past! A dark tale with twist, lust, and revenge around every corner! I couldn’t get enough of Bennett, Priest, and Ashley. A love triangle for the ages!!! Scorching chemistry and haunting pasts will leave you scrambling to turn the page!! Beware once the last page is turned major book hangover will follow!
I don’t even know how to accurately describe the awesomeness that this book is. Even if you’re not a fan of historical romance you should still read this. It’s that good. Not a swoony virgin heroine or dark rake in sight in this. It’s a dark pirate tale and Pam delves into the subject matter unapologetically and without using it for shock value like so many authors try to do.
The story is about Bennett a female pirate captain attempting to evade two very different men. Priest the king of the libertines, her former love and Lord Ashley the ruthless pirate hunter. After she is captured by Lord Ashley she has to try and escape the gallows she is bound for and win him over to her side. All while knowing nothing will stop Priest from finding her, she’s never relied on a man before so why start now. She begins to try and woo Lord Ashley and battles internally with a past betrayal and a newfound affection for her captor.
Betrayals, steamy scenes, secrets, revelations of the past, a touch of enemies to lovers, darkness, hero who will stop it nothing to protect Bennett. This had it all.
I was thoroughly impressed with the book and would recommend to anyone. Everyone needs to read this. This is a game changer and will bring so many people over to historical romances. This is not a story for the faint of heart Bennett has to go through so much to get to her HEA. So heed trigger warnings if you have any.

Wow! Pam Godwin has done it again! And in a whole new genre! As a huge fan of both Pam Godwin AND historical fiction, I could not wait to dive into this story! I am normally not very interested in pirates and the high seas, but of course, that changed the minute I started reading Sea of Ruin. What an adventure!
The characters are amazing and the perfect crew to keep me entertained during this crazy quarantine time we’re in! Bennett is such a strong female lead. She’s brave and fierce and feisty and I really enjoyed getting to know her. And those sexy hot men…this story made me wish I could go back in time and jump aboard a pirate ship! Priest and Ashley are both hot, strong men and I loved them both in different ways and for different reasons. And that’s what made me love this story so much. Pam Godwin is a master at ménage and really at sexiness in general. (Eve Trilogy still my fave!) This plot has lots of really fun twists and turns which keeps the drama going and keeps the reader on the edge of your seat! I did not want to put down my kindle and yet I also didn’t want the story to end!
I can’t recommend Sea of Ruin enough! If you’re hesitant because of the unfamiliar genre, do NOT be. Pam Godwin has written another masterpiece and has proven she can cross into pretty much any genre she pleases and produce an outstanding result! I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us next!
Wow! I started read the King of the Libertines which is the prequel to Sea of Ruin by @pamgodwinauthor and it hooked me straight away. I’ve never read a historical romance before. In all honesty they don’t really interest me but when I found out Pam was cooking this up I promised myself I was going to dive in because come on! It’s Pam Godwin! Right?! When I got done with the prequel I was so excited to read this! I fell completely in love with this amazing journey between Bennet Sharp, Priest Farrell and Lord Ashley Cutler. It was everything I could’ve asked for in a book. The writing was beyond phenomenal! Like Pam is a QUEEN!!!! It of course has her twisted mark throughout it all. Everything was so well planned. I could tell she put so much into this. This book is definitely my top read of 2020! Warning! There are triggers and some of it gets pretty nasty so be warned.
Wow….what a wild ride and an amazing adventure. Lots of action, great characters, and most importantly a well told story!! First off Bennett Sharp is one kick**s heroine. I absolutely loved her…and wouldn’t mind going back oh 30 or so years and grow up to be her. Lol She was fierce, loyal, and independent with some big female cajones…. yet with such female emotions underneath it all. Don’t get me wrong the two heroes were just as amazing but the heroine stole the show for me. When they come together …fighting for each other, healing each other, and protecting each other it was a beautiful thing. Throughout the story you could “feel” their emotions, desires, heartache, pain, suffering, longing, love, and their happiness…as deeply as if it were your own feelings. I must say you could also smell the salt air and feel the sea spray on your face. Whatever line you were reading you “felt it” and sensed it all (the good, bad, and the ugly). Well if I didn’t say so before…I loved it and highly recommend it.
Wow! This is such a masterfully written story that will mesmerize you from the first to last page!
I had no idea what I was in for when I began this book. I can’t believe how many things happen in this story, the emotions it evokes, the sheer beauty of the writing, the cunning details, and the stunning way it is told. The characters and their depth will steal your breath. Bennett is a heroine like no other. I love her feistiness and spunk.
This story is unique and intense and takes you on an incredible journey that will fill you with adventure and an immense amount of love. With each new turn of events, I was held captivated, waiting with bated breath to find out what was going to happen next.
Fantastic!
Oh my gawd! This book hit all my emotions. I’ve surprisingly never read Pam Godwin! I know, I know! I have been living under a rock apparently.
Bennet, Priest and Lord Ashley are now my new favorite tryst! This story sucked me in from page one and I literally could not put it down! If you love pirates, dark romance, and all that comes with it. You will love evey word that you read in Sea of Ruin! My new favorite dark read of 2020!
I never thought historical pirate romance would be my thing until I read this book. I couldn’t put it down. SO good!
Sea of Ruin was such a wild ride and I enjoyed every minute of it. Who thought I could love a female pirate who not only commanded my respect but also kept me on the edge of my seat with every situation she seemed to get herself into. I fell in love with her two leading men, Priest and Ashley and I loved watching Ashley come undone in more ways than one. Pirate stories were never in my wheelhouse but Pam and her brilliant storytelling broke down my barriers and gave me a new appreciation for pirate tales.
Sea of Ruin was imaginative, gripping, hot as hell and definitely a 5-star read!
“Love had hunted me, captured me, bred madness, and yes, it left a sea of ruin in its wake.”
“I’ve never met a siren, but you must be of the same ilk or nature. Unchristian, mysterious, dangerously enticing…”
What an adventure!! This story is beyond intense, it is beautifully written and so well structured that I couldn’t believe I was thinking about it as I was reading this masterpiece. This book could only be written by Pam Godwin, that is a fact; her mind works in so many levels at the same time with this story that you find yourself asking frequently how could she manage to put Sea of Ruin together!!
Bennett, bastard daughter of noble blood, she’s the daughter of the notorious Edric Sharp, one of the most dangerous and wanted pirates of all times. After his death she became the Captain of the ship she was always meant to have. She needs to find what her father left her years ago but nothing is working and while trying to honor her father she’s captured by Lord Ashley Cutler, the commodore of HMS Blitz; the only thing she didn’t expect is to be tempted by the man who wants to hang her and her peers; so she finds herself protecting the only man who managed to break her heart, Priest Farrell.
Two men and one woman; a pirate and a pirate hunter who have so much more in common than just the daughter of Edric Sharp. This is nothing like you would have imagine to be, Sea of Ruin is one story for the records, mark my words.
I was hesitant to read Sea of Ruin, historical romance have never really been my thing. What a dumb decision to wait, I absolutely loved this. Pam Godwins writing has blown me away once again. I was amazed by Bennett’s story and then adding Priest and Ashley in the mix, made it outstanding. There are so many twist and turns, I couldn’t put it down!
Okay, now that I’ve collected my thoughts over this book, I think I’m ready to review it.
Let me start this off by saying, this book came HIGHLY recommended by my lovely friend Mickey (@theinfinitereader.blog), as it was her favorite read of the year. And I 100% understand why.
Now, Sea of Ruin is not my usual book of choice, although after reading it, I’m not sure why. I mean, sexy pirates, sexy military men, badass female pirate? Yes please to all of the above. But, in all seriousness, I had never read a historical romance before and I just recently have started dabbling in dark romances.
There is not much else to say other than this book crushed my soul and then put it back together 10x over. This book is everything that I didn’t realize I needed in my life. I have recommended this book to so many people and will continue to recommend it until I’m blue in the face.
Pam Godwin, all I have to say is, thank you for writing this earth shattering book, ripping my heart out, crushing it, and putting it back together. You knocked it out of the water. (pun intended)

Avast Ye Mateys! What have I just read? A swashbuckling, bone-crunching, rip-roaring, action-packed, sweltering, saucy, sexy tsunami of a story that will sweep you away like a rogue wave over the starboard side of a 1700’s Galleon! I LOVED every crazy twist and turn of this dark romance offer from Pam Godwin. Brilliantly crafted and amazingly executed, this story will shiver your timbers and bring you countless hours of dark and devilishly fun reading. Climb aboard the gangplank, step back in time and Yo Ho Ho your way through this wonderfully wild pirate tale!
Pam Godwin did it…she got me to read an historical romance and absolutely fall in LOVE with it! It’s not a genre I would normally read, but Pam Godwin’s writing is always so spectacular that I had to get my hands on this book and I’m so glad that I did! This story is incredible, but more than that, the characters are what really make this read worthwhile. Bennett Sharp is a force to be reckoned with and I have no problem admitting my girl crush on her is strong. She is one of the most enthralling female leads I’ve ever read and Bennett alone was worth reading the story for! Pam clearly put her heart and soul into creating a masterpiece romance that took me to another world entirely – I highly recommend this book.
4.5 stars – In Bennett Sharp, Pam Godwin has created a female character that embodies everything I wish I could be. Fierce, fearless, determined, cunning, and loyal, Captain Sharp inspires those around her in a way few women of her time would have been capable. In bringing us into Bennett’s life, Ms. Godwin crafted a story that is both hard to read and enthralling in a way few stories are. They characters were so well written that they came right off the page and made me want to keep reading more about them long after the book ended. Every character had their own unique attributes, making me love or hate them each in turn, visceral reactions that continue even now. I know this book will stick with me for days if not weeks, which is the mark of a truly excellent story.
What an original story! I loved everything in this book and I can’t give much away because you have to truly read it blindly to enjoy it as the treasure it is.
4.5 stars.
Wow. After finishing this book I had to sit and really digest what I’d just read. This book was deliciously dark, gritty, and gut-wrenching! I’ve read Pam Godwin before, but to the best of my knowledge this was her first foray into historical romance. She combined dark romance and sweeping, adventurous pirate historical romance in such a masterful way, one would think she’d been doing it all this time. This read isn’t for everyone. There is betrayal and angst, a romance between three people, violence, and episodes that will trigger even someone with my hearty constitution. Seriously, heed my warning. I read a lot of dark content and at this point I pride myself on being hard to trigger. Well, fuck me, this book actually made my stomach churn and my eyebrows shoot up in several places. And I loved that. I loved that it made me uncomfortable at times and squirm in my chair. More than that, it made me FEEL! The emotions of the characters were so raw and real, that even when they were wrong I felt for them. It takes a talented author to pull something like that off!
I’d love to see more books like this from her in the future. Truly dark, edgy historical romance is rare and hard to find, so this one is definitely a keeper for those who like the rich details and settings of historical reads, along with the taboo edge of dark romances.
Well done!
I’m not a historical romance fan or even a fan of pirate stories. These I just don’t normally read. With saying that…this is also one of the most incredible stories I have read and am so glad I gave it a shot. It’s a dark romance that’s violent and incredibly hot. She is a masterful storyteller that had me unable to tear myself away from my kindle. If you haven’t picked this book up you must, because like me you won’t be able to stop until you get to the last page.
