Scrabbling for the Culprit is a book I fell in love with. Its made me like mysteries. You have a set of triplets (2 girls and 1 boy) Callie, Cassie and Lonnie makes you feel as you are right there with them trying to decide what happened to Jeff. They are working on a scrabble tournament when Jeff gets hurt. Who would want to hurt Jeff. Throw in a new detective who want to get to the bottom of this and an old one who is rude just for starters I loved how the author touches on bullying and some drug abuse.Grab the book and see what happened and how it is handles. Can’t wait to be reading the next one. I receive complimentary books for review from publishers, publicists, and/or authors. I am not required to write positive reviews. Scrabbling for the Culprit by Jane Wallace is the first book in The Board Game Murders. Cassie, Callie and Lonnie Parker are triplets who are helping with the Scrabble Tournament being held at the local high school. They discover a teacher buried under a bookcase and set out to find the culprit. I like the premise for this new cozy mystery series. Triplets solving mysteries is unique and I like that they are a close knit family. However, I felt the book could have benefited from another wrong of rewriting and editing. If I did not know better, I would believe this was the writer’s first novel (it is not). There were some inconsistencies, characters with similar names (gets confusing), repetition, and too much dialogue. The mystery was too simple. The guilty party could easily be identified right away. I wish the author had taken more time to develop the characters and the whodunit. There is potential for The Board Game Murders and I hope the author, with help from her publisher, will achieve it. I will pick up the next book in The Board Game Murders because I like the main characters, the town and the idea of mysteries involving board games.
This is a very enjoyable read such a great story. The storyline is real action packed, fast paced, page turner filled with wonderful characters.
This story takes you on an adventure that is filled with suspense, emotion and some humour and dogs!
Loved it and can’t wait for the next book.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
There’s lots of potential here. It’s a unique set up, and setting, for a cozy mystery series. It appears that this may be the author’s debut work, so I expect there to be some initial growing pains. I just wasn’t expecting quite as many as I encountered here. This book could have benefitted from another round of edits. There are a number of inconsistencies, continuity errors, and plot holes. I also recommend not having so many characters with such similar names. I don’t much care that the spelling is different, never name another character the same as your victim. I was quickly frustrated that the culprit was so obvious from the beginning and that the culprit was the only suspect that was constantly disregarded as a suspect. I’m of two minds about the religion in the story. I liked the message of second chances and redemption. I also liked that there’s not many references directly about religion. However, when those references happen, they felt a little heavy-handed. I’m interested to know more about the triplets and I’m curious to see where else the series will take us.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher.
Cons; missing/not complete thoughts, actions etc. Had a hard time finishing the story. Obvious villain, right off to me, no mystery to solve.
Pros; great family with closeness and love.
That being said, it’s a good start and hope the upcoming books in the series changes my opinion as of now.
For the most part I enjoyed reading Scrabbling for the Culprit. This book has an interesting plot and I like the main characters. However there were a few inconsistencies and repeated conversations as well as a few things that the characters somehow know without any explanation. Overall I would probably read another book in the series to see where the characters go from here.
Jane Wallace brings us triplets that like to help in solving crimes while putting on a Scrabble tournament in Scrabbling for the Culprit. Now what could possibly go wrong at a Scrabble tournament? We have Lonnie, Callie and Cassie, triplets, who are close and do everything together that are putting on a Scrabble tournament to raise money to fund scholarships and to help the photography class.
Checking the rooms to make sure they were ready for the tournament, they heard a scream… Knowing they were the only ones in the building and Cassie and Lonnie were together, they knew it had to be Callie. They were not expected what they found when they got to Jeff’s office.
Jeff had a bookshelf laying across his body and could hardly breath. Callie called 9-1-1 while Lonnie carefully lifted the bookshelf about 8 inches high so he could breath. Was this an accident or attempted murder? Could the triplets help in the investigation? Would the new detective in town, Alek, solve the crime and would the sheriff with the attitude get in the way?
The adventure begins….
Coming from a family with many sets of twins, I love stories with multiples. Triplets are a special kind of fun. Lonnie, Cassie and Callie are definitely a triple threat and I really enjoyed reading this first story. I loved all the characters in the book, even the unlovable ones. I look forward to finding out what happens next.
Cassie, Callie de Lonnie, the triplets, are busy with the Scrable tournament they are hosting in their hometown High School. But when they find their friend Jeff almost dead under a bookshelf they know they need to find the culprit. Will they be able To discover the truth?
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Scrabbling for the Culprit. The triplets were a fun addition. Their characters were interesting. There were a lot of suspects and several motives – quite enough to keep me guessing. I read this fairly quickly because I wanted to see how it would turn out! This is a very promising new series.
This is interesting. Lots of characters. I think in addition to the mystery, the community is being introduced to the series. The drama is entertaining. The mystery plot seems to drag-out as the triplets easily slide into the role of being detectives. It was odd how the community just accepted that role, lol. I like them and I hope there is a bit of romance headed into the mix. I was provided a free copy without obligation from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.
