An entrancing new series starring a funny, impulsive, and sometimes self-congratulatory young woman who discovers she has psychic abilities–and then must decide whether she will use her skills for good or…not. Teddy Cannon isn’t your typical twenty-something woman. Yes she’s resourceful, bright, and scrappy. But she can also read people with uncanny precision. What she doesn’t realize: she’s … doesn’t realize: she’s actually psychic.
When a series of bad decisions leads Teddy to a run-in with the police, a mysterious stranger intervenes. He invites her to apply to the School for Psychics, a facility hidden off the coast of San Francisco where students are trained like Delta Force operatives: it’s competitive, cutthroat, and highly secretive. They’ll learn telepathy, telekinesis, investigative skills, and SWAT tactics. And if students survive their training, they go on to serve at the highest levels of government, using their skills to protect America, and the world.
In class, Teddy befriends Lucas, a rebel without a cause who can start and manipulate fire; Jillian, a hipster who can mediate communication between animals and humans; and Molly, a hacker who can apprehend the emotional state of another individual. But just as Teddy feels like she’s found where she might belong, strange things begin to happen: break-ins, missing students, and more. It leads Teddy to accept a dangerous mission that will ultimately cause her to question everything–her teachers, her friends, her family, and even herself.
Set in a world very much like our own, School for Psychics is the first book in a stay-up-all night series.

WOW! What a Treat
I thought this would be a running erands book. After I paged back three times I knew I need to give this book time and attention. Looking forward to the next book. #psychics
In the beginning of this book I wasn’t sure I was going to stick with it. A young adult named Teddy spends a lot of time in a casino (disguised, since she is banned) trying to win back money she needs to pay off a loan shark. This beginning is needed to set the background of her being desperate for money and having an idea that she is able to somehow tell if someone is lying. It doesn’t make too much since though since she has obviously lost a lot of money. Because of those reasons though, when she is approached/saved by a man recruiting her into a secret psychic school she chooses to go. That section of the book was very slow, But I’m glad I stuck it out.
When she gets to the school the story finally starts to get interesting. She learns a lot about her self and her past. She makes new friends (although you don’t understand why she had a hard time with that before). There is something mysterious going on at the school and I liked how there are just enough hints to give you clues without giving it away. It’s a perfect amount of suspense.
I’d recommend this book to people who like crime-solving types of books along with people who like books about psychic abilities, girls who have a hard time fitting in, suspense and mystery.
***There is non-descriptive sex, sexual remarks, and bad language (all I found unnecessary) and very mild violence.
I received an e-ARC from the publisher through Net Gallery for my honest review.
This one was surprisingly uneven, and therefore only three stars despite some things I really liked… It started out strong, with some hysterical insights and one-liners. Teddy is a snarky cynic – two qualities I quite admire in protagonists. She’s also willful and self-deceptive and nowhere near as independent as she wants everyone (including herself) to think she is. Those characteristics often combine into complex and interesting main characters. But they can also combine into tropes fairly easily. Teddy dances the line between C&I and T a little too much for my taste – which is the cause for most of my “surprisingly uneven” comment…
There’s some really cool and fun stuff here. None of it is altogether original. A misfit finds out she’s more than anyone (again, including herself) thought. An orphan learns secrets about her birth parents. A loner discovers she needs people. The quiet unprepossessing types are the ones hiding the most. Kids have to save the world. It’s a lot of stuff that’s been done before. That isn’t to say that it isn’t a fun read – it was, for the most part, largely because of the snark and cynicism of Teddy. But there were parts that I skimmed because they felt all too “been there, done that” too…
My review copy was provided by NetGalley.
I received a copy of this story from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I don’t like starting a series that hasn’t been finished. I’m part of the Harry Potter generation; I’ve done my time waiting for more books to come out. So I usually just add something to my ‘to-read’ list and keep an eye on it.
That said, I’m so upset with myself for waiting to read this! It was fantastic. There’s mystery, action, magic in the form of various psychic powers, and a wonderful cast of characters. I was hooked from the very beginning (I’ll always buy into a story that starts at the poker table).
My complains are minor: a few spelling mistakes towards the end and having to wait for the next book. I want to know more now!
I’d absolutely recommend this to anyone and everyone. Seriously, you should read it.
School for Psychics, book 1 in the Grand!!! new School for Psychics series by K.C. Archer. Looking forward to MORE books in this ‘Harry Potter for adults’ series!!! The main character Teddy Cannon, twenty something, has always been intuitive. Lately though her talent has become so much more. And hard to control. Psychic abilities?!?! She is spunky, intellegent, ready to take on the world. She just needs help. With her exploding talent. Characters that readers will build an ongoing relationship with. A mix of zany, eccentric and all a round normal. This school for psychics has adult students and FBI agents. Pages turn nonstop, from beginning to end!!! K. C. Archer weaves a entertaining story of reality with creative twists of imagination. Fun! Action! Unpredictable. Murder and mayhem. A bit of romance and building relationships. A solid storyline that will keep readers captivated for any additions to this series! I received this book an as ARC from Simon and Schuster publishing through NetGalley. I am voluntarily posting this review. Set time aside, put feet up and enjoy this fun, action packed, imaginative, original read.
School for Psychics is a fast-paced read that is a little bit conspiracy mixed with some mystery and a touch of possible romance. We have a group of misfits with special abilities thrown together at a school designed to help them hone those abilities and make them into crime fighters. All of this should’ve had me in its clutches from the start. Sadly, the actual story didn’t even come close. Our main character, Teddy, is unlikable from the start, then we have the rest of her classmates, who aren’t much better. I realize that with a series, there is time to stretch out world and character building, but this group of misfits are almost interchangeable. They’re all at this school as a last resort – not because they want to be, but because they don’t have any other choices. Instead of making the most of a last chance opportunity, they continue to break the rules and don’t seem to learn from their mistakes. I expected young adult, but this bunch of twenty somethings act more like hormone driven high school students. All of this combined to make for a story that just didn’t pull me in and make me want to keep reading.
