I really enjoyed this book. I can’t wait to read more of this series.
THIS REVIEW IS FOR BOTH THE AUDIOBOOK AND EBOOK VERSIONS
Really good book, so thrilling, tons of action and some emotional scenes. Very unexpected ending. I really enjoyed this book and the narration was perfectly performed. I recommend this book.
My first read of this author’s work. I’m moving right on to book 2 in the series. Morgan’s family dynamic along with her emerging from grief with a readiness to help others makes her a character to root for. Her teaming up with Lance to prove Nick’s innocence kept the tension building.
Attorney Morgan Dane is a widow with three young girls who is finally deciding to emerge following the death of her husband. It’s been a year and she’s ready to get on with her life and is considering a job as assistant district attorney in Scarlet Falls. Before she has a chance to decide, she’s asked by her former babysitter’s grandmother to help find her. Morgan gets former police officer Lance Kruger, now a private investigator, to assist her and together they find Tessa Palmer, brutally murdered. When her neighbor’s son Nick is arrested for the crime, Morgan volunteers to represent him as she’s convinced of his innocence.
The story begins from Tessa’s point of view as she’s being pursued by her killer so needless to say, I got hooked immediately and found it difficult to stop listening. We’re given small clues right from the beginning but not enough to deduce the killer. Morgan’s decision to represent Nick is not without consequence as the community believes he’s guilty and turns against her. It was interesting to witness the fragility of long standing relationships in these type situations when the public at large renders a verdict before the trial has even started. I was happy to see Lance again from the Scarlet Falls series and his and Morgan’s burgeoning romance is on low simmer. That’s refreshing as so often there’s an instalove rush but not here. Much time is being given as both of them have baggage to shed.
The rest of the story lived up to the promise of the prologue as the pace was rapid, the investigation compelling and the action exciting. I must admit to being caught flatfooted in figuring out the identity of the killer but also really didn’t care because the story was more engaging than my desire to deduce the villain (an anomaly for me!). The secondary characters were equally interesting and added texture to the story. This series is a spinoff of Scarlet Falls and while it stands alone very well, i benefitted by knowing a lot about Lance, the town and some other characters. You’ll enjoy this no matter but for die hards like me that are diligent about character development and reading in order, it’s something to consider. I chose to listen to the book and Cris Dukeheart delivered a strong performance. I’m committed to this format for the rest of the series with the same narrator.
Morgan Dane is a kick-ass, relatable heroine. I love that her life is messy and busy just like any mom’s, and her history and chemistry with Lance adds the perfect amount of heat. Looking forward to reading more about Morgan, her family, Lance, and Sharp!
Fun book, with many surprises!
Loved this. Good story teller. Can’t wait to read the next one.
Melinda Leigh is a great author – She keeps your attention all the way thru the book – I read the book in 2 sittings because I needed to finish it & find out who the killer was
I follow Melinda Leigh and would recommend all of her books.
Enjoyed it. I like all her books.
Her books are always wonderful
Starts of with a heart racing situation and turns into a race to find the culprit. I really enjoyed this book with its writing style. I was hooked from the beginning all the way until it’s end. The narration is fantastic as well. Overall a very good suspense/mystery book and I will definitely be reading more in this series.
Normally I love this author, but this book just didn’t grab me. Not sure why. The characters and story were both interesting, but I just struggled to get engaged with it.
Morgan Dane, a compassionate lawyer with young daughters, is a compelling heroine. The book is as much a romance as a mystery, juggling both genres well, and closing all the storylines with very satisfactory conclusions. There are numerous memorable characters and the pacing of the story is excellent.
After the devastating loss of her husband in Iraq, Morgan Dane returns to Scarlet Falls, seeking the comfort of her hometown. Now, surrounded by family, she’s finally found peace and a promising career opportunity—until her babysitter is killed and her neighbor asks her to defend his son, Nick, who stands accused of the murder.
So Morgan gives it all up to defend Nick because she believes he is innocent. But proving it is another story. I loved this book because I for one, could not have guessed at who did it until the very end. Most of the time the whole case felt so hopeless that I really thought there would be a different outcome.
Also loved the relationship Morgan has with PI Lance Kruger and since this is book 1, I am sure I will be reading more about these two.
My first of Melinda Leigh. Nice premise that sets the stage for the start of a new series. Murder, romance, and suspense. It’s all here. Will read others in the series.
4.5 stars
Say You’re Sorry broke my Melinda Leigh cherry, and what a way to go!
Not only do we have the simmering undercurrent of a new romance but we also have murder, mayhem, mystery and intrigue. All solved of course by Morgan Dane and P. I. Lance Kruger.
Will certainly be reading more from this author.
A great story that grabs you from the first page and keeps you engaged. The lead characters are people you’d love to root for, and watching their relationship mature is as captivating as the mystery.
I really fell in love with these characters and cared about what happened to them. The mystery had a great twist that I wasn’t expecting. It’s definitely a page-turner!
Great start to the new series for me. I was hooked in this from the very beginning and couldn’t read fast enough to see who is the murderer because I couldn’t guess it. Loved this book so much. Straight to the next book of this amazing series!
