From New York Times bestselling author Catherine Ryan Hyde comes a feel-good story of four outcasts who learn that some bonds are stronger than blood.
On an isolated Texas ranch, Dr. Lucy cares for abandoned animals. The solitude allows her to avoid the people and places that remind her of the past. Not that any of the townsfolk care. In 1959, no one is interested in a woman doctor. Nor are they … woman doctor. Nor are they welcoming Calvin and Justin Bell, a newly arrived African American father and son.
When Pete Solomon, a neglected twelve-year-old boy, and Justin bring a wounded wolf-dog hybrid to Dr. Lucy, the outcasts soon find refuge in one another. Lucy never thought she’d make connections again, never mind fall in love. Pete never imagined he’d find friends as loyal as Justin and the dog. But these four people aren’t allowed to be friends, much less a family, when the whole town turns violently against them.
With heavy hearts, Dr. Lucy and Pete say goodbye to Calvin and Justin. But through the years they keep hope alive…waiting for the world to catch up with them.

Oh Catherine Ryan Hyde, you have done again! I can’t scold you for doing it because then that would mean you don’t have other novels that will capture me and hold me hostage until I finish reading it, no matter what time it is. So I guess thanks and gratitude are in order and lots of coffee to help me through the day?
I was up until 1:30 AM this morning reading Say Goodbye For Now. The characters, the animals, and, most importantly, the multiple storylines, were so incredibly and perfectly well-written and brought me right into their lives. I was so emotional reading this and have a feeling I will continue to be for quite some time.
You are such an amazing author and I can’t wait to read more of your books!
Pretty good read. Wounded dog, abused 12 year old, withdrawn female doctor and a black man and his son all thrown together in 1959 Texas. Recipe for disaster or at least a lot of fear and pain.
Dr. Lucy and Mr Bell connect when she patches up his son who was beaten for being seen talking to a white boy. When the small town realizes they are friends, Mr Bell goes to jail for 60 days and Dr Lucy is threatened by the local police. And all the time, Pete is trying to appease his abusive father to stop the beatings.
Wasn’t as brutal as I feared, thankfully.
I like most of the books by Chatherine Ryan Hyde, although sometimes they can be painful.
