As if he doesn’t have enough to handle between running outlaws out of Cheyenne, keeping his brothers out of trouble, and avenging his father’s death, Sheriff Sawyer McCade’s meddling mother just dumped a mysterious mail-order bride on his doorstep. One woman can be more trouble than a band of renegades, and while this one has him all stirred up, he’d rather get to the bottom of the story she … isn’t telling.Rose Parker had it alluntil a web of danger and deceit sends her running to Cheyenne posing as a mail-order bride. Escaping the evils of New York seems sensible until she meets the unsuspecting sheriff who didn’t ask for her, has no intention of marrying her, and won’t rest until he uncovers her secret and sends her back home.

First book of what I think will likely be a “GREAT” series!!!
———————————
As a brand new to me author, Kim Turner has definitely turned the head and caught the attention of this NetGalley reviewer. Though western romance is not my usual genre, I delightfully delve into it once in a while when the mood strikes and synopsis lures me in. Ms. Turner definitely did not disappoint! You know it’s a good book, folks, when you see the images/story unfold in your head as clearly as if you were watching a movie.
**mild spoilers possible**
It is worth commenting the story seemed to center more around Sawyer than just his relationship with Rose. In fact, Rose felt like a sub-plot at times, especially after half-way through. Sawyer’s job as sheriff, son, patriarch older brother, and all around peace keeper of the town, his family, and handling the escalating, threatening issue with next door rancher Benton, kept him more than just a little busy. Oh, there is also the unidentified reappearance of a mysterious man lurking in the shadows. He also became a problem Sawyer had to deal with.It
But what can I say? I’m really jealous when it comes to sharing book time with anything other than the main couple’s romance. Especially when a “surprise you’re a daddy” element involving a deceased, former lover is thrown in. At least here, the author worked that twist into the plot in such a way it turned out rather helpful, but I am what I am..(off screen shoulder shrug). It’s just personal preference, my fellow romance book loving friends.
Yes, I enjoy sub-plots, and these are well-written, I just felt like they began to overshadow the romance and started to make the book feel a tad overly long. There were times I whipped out my Kindle fast-forwarding forefinger and went to town skimming over pages looking for Rose, romance, and the story’s final conclusion. The last 20% was action packed western shoot-out drama, btw.
I am extremely grateful the western theme was not overly done. There were no “yippee-yo ki yays” or “yee-haws.” Everyone spoke in a normal, coherent, non-irritating, understandable dialect. Thank you so much for that, Ms. Turner! It is very much appreciated! There were only a couple of passionate, steamy scenes, as well.” Therefore, you do not have to worry about steam replacing meaningful substance here, folks.
So not to deter you at all from reading this book, just be warned “The Trials and Tribulations of Sawyer” might be a very fitting title. He sure had a lot to keep up with. Here’s to hoping sequels featuring the brothers (Wyatt, Evan, and Dawson) are just as entertaining. I have a very strong feeling they will be.
Book 1 – Sawyer’s Rose
Book 2 – Wyatt’s Bount
Book 3 – Dawson’s Haven
All But the Fall – (Sun River Ranchers – Book 1)
Title: Sawyer’s Rose, Series: The McCade’s of Cheyenne (Book 1), Author: Kim Turner, Pages: 360, stand-alone but part of a series, only a couple very steamy scenes, surprise you’re a daddy due to another woman years ago, no cheating, no love triangle, no OW/OM drama, HEA, some western type violence, western theme was not overly done.

McCades Of Cheyenne Book One.
Sheriff Sawyer McCade is perfectly happy with the way his life is running, until his mother sends a mail-order bride to his home. Rose Parker is posing as a mail-order bride to escape her life in New York. Both have danger following them, but together maybe they can find a way out of their former situations. With secrets and lies between them, Rose and Sawyer still manage to work together and form a companionship that works for both of them. However, the day is coming when Sawyer’s family must cross paths with their vindictive neighbor.
If you’re looking for a story with suspense, family and Western charm, this is the book for you.
Sawyer’s Rose
The McCades Of Cheyenne, Book 1
By: Kim Turner
Narrated by: Dawson McBride
Kim Turner is a new to me author, but this certainly will nit be my last listen by her! She has brought the west to life with this highly visual story with family, suspense and love! Sawyer is busy keeping things in line with his brothers and being sheriff. His mother wants more for his life, so when Rose is in need of a place to go for her own protection, she is brought in as a mail order bride for Sawyer. And the fun begins! The banter, the passion, the understanding that these two have is what makes this listen so good! It’s a complex story, with Sawyer’s past coming to play, outlaws, and injuries. Quite a few twists and turns, all letting us get to know the family and the community. I love these kind of stories that encompass such strong family ties and the feelings both good and bad that go along with it. It’s real, emotional, suspenseful and loving. Couldn’t ask for a better listen.
Narrated to perfection by the voice of Dawson McBride, his twang and pace is just how I expect. He adds gruffness to the outlaws, tenderness when in love and that warm protective feel to his voice as he keeps the family safe. He adds a great flare to the banter between brothers and I love his ability to go between the male and female characters with ease. It’s a spectacular listen.

A great book. First in the series from a wonderful historical romance writer.
Kim Turner sure knows how to write a gripping good story that draws you in and pulls at your heartstrings, she makes you fall in love with her characters, from the feisty women of Cheyenne to the hot sheriff that is Sawyer McCade.
There is plenty of fast paced action from the running of the family ranch to catching outlaws and the bombshell that is Rose Parker mail-order bride who arrives on the train from New York and turns Sawyer’s life upside down.
Any reader that likes historical novels or even just a great Cowboy story is sure to fall in love with one of the McCade brothers.
Wonderful first book from this author, i’m so looking forward to reading so many more in the future.
Well this was a satisfactory read for me. Not bad but not great. The first half was pretty slow. It picked up a little after the half way mark but for the most part it was a slower pace read. There was a few cool wild west type gun fights to shake things up. I think the two major problems I had with this book are 1. It skips around weeks at a time with no clear timeline. That left me trying to figure out what was going on more than once and in general was just confusing. One minute they are eating dinner then it weeks later and it doesn’t even say how many weeks later, then it’s weeks later again. And it didn’t just confuse the timeline it confused the plot and slowed it down. For instance Sawyer would be in his office thinking of Rose then in the next sentence he was at the ranch eating dinner weeks later and I was like what whoa how did we get here. 2. There is not much in the way of relationship development for 3/4s of the book. It was more like “The Days of Sawyer’s Life” soap then a romance. I mean Sawyer was interesting, but I wanted love and romance. Although we readers do get some sweet moments the last 1/4 of the book I was looking for more. The couple were almost never together, didn’t really speak a lot to each other and did their own things (Mainly Sawyer) then at the 1/4 mark they’re in love and I didn’t really feel that love because after 3/4s of a book, hundreds of pages I didn’t really see how they had been around each other or talked to each other enough to have any feelings at all. It felt very superficial. I liked the secondary characters and I wouldn’t mind reading Wyatt’s book. Overall this book was an okay read and I would try this author again.
The story starts out with a mystery of who killed Sawyer’s father and how it affected all that were there. The mystery does play out, and we find out just what went down that day long ago and why it was done. A great story that is based on Sawyer and his mother waiting him to marry so much she sends away for a bride. When he finds out he isn’t happy at all and plans to ship her right back where she came from. As we all know plans do not always go as planned and in this case it didn’t. Poor Sawyer has mixed feelings after seeing Rose for the first time. Both are very attracted to each other and both fight it. There is also a mystery surrounding Rose and why she needs to become a mail order bride she is on the run but from what, have no fear danger is always near. There are many twists and turns that does make the story very interesting as well as a few surprises along the way.
I thought the narrator did a pretty good job, he has that rough cowboy voice that does pull you in. His character voices are okay they do sound a little close to each other. At times his voice seems a little flat, pauses when he should not and a few times he should have. It took me a little while to get into the way he portrayed the story. His male and female voices were nice for the most part I knew who was talking. His voice emotions weren’t to bad but after a little while you forgot all the above and really enjoyed his narration. There was no background noises, no volume changes if any breaks were taken I could not tell. All over I thought his performance was good and I enjoyed it. With a little work on character voices, showing true emotions he will have a wonderful career as a narrator.
I thought the author gave a delightful story but I did feel it was a little long. She gives wonderful detail with a lot going on. There are a few stories building that will take over into the next book in this series. I enjoyed the mysteries, the characters, the supporting characters. Rose is a very strong woman and doesn’t have any trouble standing on her own two feet which at time really gets to Sawyer. She doesn’t follow instruction very well but what woman does or for the most part should. I liked how protective Sawyer is of her and his whole family. I enjoyed how she stood up to Sawyer and how at times she works with him. The baiting between the two and the family was nice. I chuckled a few times, even raised an eyebrow a time or two. Sometimes I got a little confused but that might have been a little to do with the narration. I thought it was an exciting story with danger, excitement, fear and challenges that really made it interesting. There is a lot going on between these pages but the author was able to pull me back with my mind started wondering. Bottom line an enjoyable read with characters you will like, you will chuckle, with a few mouth drops and a lot of smiles. I thought it was worth my time. For a debut novel it was very good, well thought out and a lot of fun.
