She’s a lone wolf with a cause.
As a volunteer at a shelter for lone shifters—the same one that rescued her—Makenna Wray has dedicated her life to finding homes for its residents. And when she discovers that a teen in her care is related to Ryan Conner, the broody, handsome-as-sin enforcer of the Phoenix Pack, she’s eager to help connect the two. She just wasn’t prepared to feel a connection of … connection of her own.
Lone wolves are loners for a reason—and most of them bad. Or so Ryan assumes until he meets the mysterious Makenna. Quirky and sensual, she seems to enjoy riling him, especially when she refuses to discuss her past. Although there is no mating bond, he’s sure she’s the one. All he has to do is be patient and wait. But when another pack’s sinister Alpha comes sniffing around, threatening Makenna and her shelter, this enforcer is ready to let his wolf off the leash…

Taking the grunt to a whole new level
I liked this story. I like that Ryan never doubted the things he “knew” about his and Makenna’s relationship. I loved getting to meet new secondary characters, especially knowing we’d learn more about them later on. And of course, I loved getting more Phoenix Pack… it would have been nicer if the Mercury Pack had played a little bit larger role in this, but I still enjoyed it.
Great series.
I found this book to be quite entertaining. There was humor. (At times I was laughing out loud). There is sexual tension galore. The characters were likable except for the bad guys. You find yourself yelling for the good guys on multiple occasions. The heroine is spicy and funny the Hero Is quite silent most of the time except for the occasional grunt. But he comes alive when he’s with her. I don’t like women to be portrayed as liking “rough” sex. I think it sends out a bad message. This is my only complaint. After reading it I immediately went to my library to see if I had other books In the series. I had one other. But, I went ahead and purchased the first three.
I really enjoy this series! I also really, really enjoy the characters and world this author created.
Available via KU + audio included.
I was especially looking forward to this one as we finally get to know what’s going on inside the grunty but otherwise stoic Ryan. Kenna was absolutely his perfect match, a wonderful new character, and the introduction of the rescue center opened up a new batch of characters as the series continues.
Jill Redfield is fantastic. This is a HUGE cast of characters, male and female, young and old ~ and even though the packs are expanding and merging, she *still* manages to give them all unique voices and characteristics. You know exactly who is talking at any given time. Loved it.
Note: This series is intertwined with Wright’s Mercury Pack series. For chronological order of events, you’ll want to have read/listened to 1-4 of Phoenix pack *AND* Spiral of Need (Mercury #1). Then Savage Urges. After this is Force of Temptation (Mercury #2).
If you like shape-shifters then this is a wonderful series.
This series keeps getting better and better. I love the new chracters and having a shelter for lone shifters made the world-building better. All the things you enjoy in a book are there romance, steamy scenes, suspense, funny scenes and most of all its action-packed.
I really enjoyed the story. It was well written and fun to read. Makenna’s belief and the way she understands Ryan’s grunts were hilarious.. I especially adore how Kye outstare Nick everytime..
Well if you love Shifters I really recommend this series and the Mercury pack series. Ms. Wright will definitely give you a thrilling ride
What I always find so unique about this series is how in each book our main couple often discovers they are mates in different ways. It’s never the same big reveal on repeat every time, which can sometimes happen when dealing with a series of this length. In this novel, what makes it all the more interesting is that close-mouthed Ryan is the one who first discovers they are destined to be together, and he has to try and convince the seemingly carefree Makenna of their mating link. Such a complex role reversal that we haven’t really seen before.
Although she feels an undeniable chemistry with Ryan, Makenna is hesitant to acknowledge they are mates in case it isn’t actually true. As the story progresses, we uncover that her hesitations aren’t just related to her bond with Ryan, but with the Phoenix Pack as a whole. Makenna has been a lone wolf since she was a little girl, and fears that by joining a pack it means they might eventually abandon her. We haven’t really been introduced to any lone wolf characters in this series before, but their stories draw you in where you just want to learn more. Combine that with a somewhat eccentric female lead and a male whose literal job is to protect his pack? You can’t help but be entertained.
The suspenseful story line in this book was definitely a standout within the series. Makenna works at a shelter for loners who are on the run, and their safety is being threatened by an alpha wolf who wants to claim the shelter for his own. The shelter itself provides us with a slew of new and lovable characters. However, we can see that it isn’t the only dramatic point in the novel, although it is sort of the center point from which all the drama unfolds.
We have Ryan’s nephew who is on the run from a hurtful pack who wants him back under any means necessary, and it simply wouldn’t be a Phoenix Pack novel without a few human extremists running around demanding blood. Again, all of these issues involve the shelter in some way, which simultaneously heightens the suspense, and threatens the existence of the shelter as it is attacked form multiple enemies. Ryan comes to help the shelter, but so does his entire pack. It makes Makenna question if the lone wolf lifestyle is really for her anymore.
As is often the case with the novels in this series, I couldn’t help but feel slightly disappointed with how the drama progressed. There’s always a spurt of introduction to it at the very beginning, and it all comes together for a climactic end, but it’s pretty absent from the middle section of the novel. However, this in no way means the middle part isn’t interesting. Far from it!
Seeing Makenna try to make the tough-as-nails Ryan loosen up, and him trying to convince her of their mating link was thoroughly entertaining. It’s just a shame that the dramatic elements are always pushed to the back burner. That being said, I will admit that this novel probably does some of the best work in the series of trying to weave those suspenseful points into as much of the story as possible. While not perfect, it’s definitely an improvement from the last few Phoenix Pack stories.
I have been very curious about Ryan’s book. Because if someone can be described as the dominant, dangerous and silent type, that would be Ryan. He grunts more than he speaks but I must confess that I have a weak spot for this silent but tough guy in my books. So I was really looking forward to reading ‘Savage urges’ and I think that the writer choose the perfect woman/mate for Ryan. Makenna is totally opposite from Ryan but one of the things that they share in common is their protective instinct towards others. People who are vulnerable and need help.
They both have dedicated their lives to helping and protecting others. Both have been hurt by others and by life. That have made them strong but also cautious of letting people close and their own emotions.
I really love how the writer expands this series, book by book. In each book we get to meet more people/shifters and we see a bit more of this special shifter/human world. I really like that. In this book we learn a bit more about the lone shifters and how they are viewed and treated by the other shifters and humans.
The story is again told from both POV’s and I loved Makenna’s character very much. Her superstitious made me laugh a lot in this book and the fact that she could ‘understand’ Ryan’s grunts was fun too.
I’m really enjoying this series.
I love all her stories! This is the story of our surly, grunt answering Ryan and our carefree and beautiful Makenna or Kenna as Ryan loves to call her. Filled with action, betrayal, killing, past characters, a marked and mated pair, with possible future mates, I truly enjoyed it. 5 RIP-ROARING, WHITE FANG, DON’T SAY IT, LOL STARS*****
3.5 Who do you belong to? stars
I am a huge fan girl of Suzanne Wright. I have been ever since I came across her Deep in your veins series. I love Suzanne Wright’s writing style. I love her knack for writing sassy, kick butt, lovable heroines and broody, protective, sexy heroes. I love the Phoenix Pack series. I liked Ryan from the first time I read about him in Feral Sins. He was so broody, and grunted instead of talking I was just dying to know his backstory. I wanted him to find his mate and see him changed by love. Sadly his mate Makenna wasn’t what I was hoping for.
Ryan was everything I loved and more. He was broody, dominate, protective and possessive. He had this socially awkward charm that totally worked for him. A man of few words, he was honest and didn’t people please. I found Ryan sexy, and I can’t really think of one thing I would have changed about him. He really made the book for me. Makenna on the other hand. Well I liked her alright, but she was just bland for me. She was suppose to be quirky, fun, honest, kick butt with a heart of gold, but she just fell flat. I’m not really sure why she didn’t work for me. Other than being annoyed that she jammed up the mating signal for so long with her fear I can’t really name anything I didn’t like about her which is why I am confused as to why I didn’t connect with her. But I didn’t.
I still really enjoyed this book overall. I loved getting to catch up with past couples and seeing Kye again. And any time I can get more Trey and Taryn(my favorite couple of the series) I’m game. I thought Zac was great and I enjoyed the plot of the loner shelter. I thought Ryan was a sexy beast that made the bedroom scenes in this book. It was so funny the way Makenna would translate Ryan’s grunts. At the end of the day I still love Suzanne Wright and I’m still gonna read every book she writes. I enjoyed this read just not as much as some of her others. I am really looking forward to Dominic’s book. I can’t wait to see what kind of mate he gets.
Loved this book! Love this series! LOVE THIS AUTHOR!
Sarcasm galore.. I laughed and laughed. Every. Single. Book!
