Love thy neighbor? Oh I intend to.
I’m turned on the second Candace crosses my driveway.
Full lips,
Curvaceous hips,
And a sense of confidence that can’t be denied.
She could drive any man wild.
But I’m not any man. I’m a retired SEAL.
And an infuriatingly wild-spirited woman is no challenge.
The demons from my past are back.
And my little girl’s life is at stake.
I’ll … infuriatingly wild-spirited woman is no challenge.
The demons from my past are back.
And my little girl’s life is at stake.
I’ll protect them both.
But I can’t let it go further than that.
Because doing what I really want to Candace is both a distraction…
And downright un-neighborly.

Savage Daddy is the second book By Kai Lesy I have read, and like the first book I keep wanting to read more. I loved reading Candace and Aiden’s story. The mix of danger and suspense made the story a enjoyable book to read.
Great Potential but Not What it Appears to Be…
“Savage Daddy Next Door” by Kai Lesy was not at all what I expected. More precisely, it was not what I expected in a way that is genuinely one of my biggest literary pet peeves, when the book’s description doesn’t match what’s written in the actual book.
The sales description for this book listed on Amazon, Goodreads, etc., is as follows: “I’m turned on the second Candace crosses my driveway. Full lips, Curvaceous hips, And a sense of confidence that can’t be denied. She could drive any man wild. But I’m not any man. I’m a retired SEAL. And an infuriatingly wild-spirited woman is no challenge. The demons from my past are back. And my little girl’s life is at stake. I’ll protect them both. But I can’t let it go further than that. Because doing what I really want to Candace is both a distraction… And downright un-neighborly.”
The description brings to mind images of a spirited younger woman catching the eye of a retired Navy SEAL, single Dad raising his daughter. A single Dad with past deeds or ex’s to hide. It paints a description of Candace as being this super assured, self confident, single woman; and overall gives the impression this is going to be an older man/younger woman scenario with some suspenseful, who-done-it, 007-esque intrigue in-between. Yet nothing could be further from the truth.
The truth of the matter is this story is about “Drew” and his “daughter” “Anna”, who are on the run, and have moved to a small town in Indiana under mysterious circumstances, to start over. And Candace, a soldier’s widow, who packs up her young son Billy and moves back to said small town after she inherits her grandmother’s home. Furthermore, while “Drew” is an ex SEAL, not all is as it appears. And while Candace is sassy, she is far from being the “wild-spirited” siren you’re initially led to believe she is.
Are there steamy spots in the book as the description implies? Yes, but more as a side note. The chemistry between “Drew” and Candace is actually only a teeny tiny part of what it’s about. And honestly, doesn’t even accurately describe them as they’re actually written on the page, or the relationship that happens between them. Which for me, is disappointing. Especially considering the story actually told in this book is a decent one. One that is a fairly fast-paced story of murder, grief induced revenge, mistakes, treachery, second chances, and yes love.
It is a story that could definitely stand on its own merits, and one that is suspenseful and titillating enough to hold your attention through to the end.
All things considered, it’s a real shame because the story within is conceptually wonderful. This book has the potential to be great. The framework and character development are good. The story arc is attention grabbing, suspenseful, and heart pounding. The characters, emotionally intelligent and relatable. But what you see in the description isn’t at all what you get. And that coupled with editing issues that need attention, especially the typos, and the odd capitalization of the first few words of every sentence in random chapters throughout. An odd quirk I found both off-putting and distracting. All things that sadly make this book a disappointing pass for me.
A SEAL, a widow, two young children and the mob. What more can you want? The characters are well written and you can feel their emotions. Author did an excellent job with this book.
Aiden is a retired SEAL with a terrible story behind him.
Candance is a widow with a little boy who goes back to his small town.
Well, the book has potential but there are some buts. The beginning is very slow and makes difficult to get into the story. The mistakes Aiden and his friends make while trying to protect him and his niece are unforgivable. And the worst thing, at least for me, is all the gore scenes and the deaths that could have been absolutely avoidable.
I did like the kids, how they become friends and how Anna/Alexis helps to calm down and protects Billy.
Not bad, but I wished it could had been better…
If anything needs to be said about this book (and why it received four stars rather than three), it’s because I appreciate the realism brought to the table. No holding back on the violence though it was treated well without being gratuitous. The hero and the heroine were somewhat sympathetic… I think I liked Candace more than Aiden because Aiden’s character really needed more work to tighten things up. It’s like explanations about his character were rushed a lot. I wished we could have learned more about his relationship between him and his identical yet very dead twin Nelson and Nelson’s wife. That might have made for a better Aiden, come to think about it.
Also, as much as I really appreciate the kids, they needed to have a more dominant role here to make it better. Sure, some may say, they had a lot more than other books, but the writer seemed to rush too many explanations and that’s that. Like that’ll do for me. In other words, a little too pat.
I guessed who was doing all the nasty things to Candace. It really wasn’t that much of a surprise. The writer did a DEAD GIVEAWAY. You’re not supposed to do that if you wanted the surprise to be a surprise.
Maybe I’m tired of a mafia tie-in. I will have to say that she didn’t mince words with her version of mafioso. That really surprised me because most writers don’t was to risk nasty reviews by readership who find it unappealing. That’s what would have earned five stars. Realism is important. There is no such thing as hearts and flowers when it comes to the mafia.
Still seeing misuse of “past” for “passed”. This must have been a latter 1980s and early 1990s school education error in English composition. That’s popping up more now. And knowing writers nowadays, they are rushing into too many deadlines and not going over their manuscripts (or the finished product) for errors. Kept seeing what looked like the last letter of a word being dropped. (Including in some of the POV headings!)
I would recommend this as a KU read. If you like it, then, perhaps, maybe get into the rest of the series.
I received this book with the understanding that I could leave a voluntary and honest review.
In this book we meet Candace and Aiden. Both have come to Stone Bay in the hopes of something better. Candace is on her last leg since her husband died overseas serving on a mission. She has had to raise their son as a single parent with the insurance money running out she isn’t sure where they will live shortly. That is when she gets a call saying she inherited her grandmother’s house. It is falling apart due to age but it is all hers and now she knows she has a roof to put over her son’s head. Aiden is on the run. Since finding his twin brother dead he has taken his daughter and run from the mobsters who killed him. He knows it isn’t a good idea to have anything to do with the single mother next door but he just can’t help himself. Will these two find that they are each other’s HEA they didn’t know they were looking for or when it all comes crashing down will they wish for something else?
This is a amazing hit by this author. It does have its ups and downs I really want to tell you about. However I don’t want to ruin the story for any other readers. I will say this book will have you on the edge of your seat from the first word to the very end. I would highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.
This was a pretty good read. There was action, suspense, gossipy old biddies, secrets, drama, angst, guilt and love. Candace is returning to her home town with her eight year old son, Billy. Drew/Aiden has recently moved to this small town with his daughter Anna. He is keeping Anna, who is actually his niece safe from people who want to kill him for what happened in Chicago. He meets Candace and the connection was instant, but he knows he needs to keep his distance. He doesn’t want anything to happen to her or her son. Soon things start happening to Candace, and he starts to wonder if his past has finally caught up to him. He promises himself that he will keep Alexis, Candace and Billy safe no matter what. I liked the story and the characters were great, especially, the kids. I could have done without a certain person, but there always has to be someone who causes dram.
Aiden and his daughter are living a secret life because of the danger they are in. His daughter is really his niece and she doesn’t like that they have to live with different names and that she’s the new kid in school. Candace just moved back into her grandmother’s house that she inherited with her son Billy. Candace came back after she lost her husband overseas while he was in the military. She didn’t realize how bad the house was in need of repairs she doesn’t know how she’ll do it on her own. She works for her aunt in her bakery all the while her cousin treats her like crap for coming back. When Aiden’s niece and Candace’s son make friends its not long before they are spending time together. Things get heated between them and they in up in bed together. When her car and house in vandalized Candace doesn’t know why anyone would do such things to her but tries to move past it. Aiden is worried that his past may have found them and is going after Candace as a way to torture him. What will Candace do when she learns about his secret life? Who is doing everything to Candace?
This is a great story that will have you on the edge of your seat. The chemistry between them is off the charts hot. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Candace and Aiden, two characters each with a past that makes moving forward in relationships difficult. However, the attraction they have for each other seems to make it all worth fighting for.
The characters are pretty mature in dealing with the punches life throws their way.
