A woman torn between honor and survival…
Raised in a realm where humans are no better than slaves, Rie Lhethannien has struggled for decades to earn a meager post in the High Court messenger service. Even training as an elite fighter isn’t enough to earn the respect she craves. Scorned by the high elves who rely on her loyalty, Rie’s closest allies are the fierce carnivorous pixies who travel … who travel by her side.
When she’s attacked on a routine delivery by assassins from the enemy Shadow Realm, Rie’s martial prowess keeps her alive…and frames her as a traitor. Facing execution at the hand of an unmerciful high elf king, Rie must forsake her oaths and flee into enemy lands to prove her innocence. With surprising help from a bastard prince and an ambitious blood sidhe, Rie searches for the truth behind the attack. The secrets she uncovers may threaten more than her honor or even her life…for war is looming in the nine faerie realms.

Liked the characters and I didn’t get bogged down in describing every scene ad infinitum
A very fast read. I enjoyed the book so much, I immediately bought the second book in the series.
If you like Fantasy (elves, goblins, etc.) you will like this. The best recommendation I can give is: I got this book for free and now I am buying more in the series. Typically I get a free book from Bookbub, read it and say ‘this is nice’ and move on. I have a stack of free books that I have yet to read, so the book has to really grab me in order for me to spend the money. I forgot one unusual feature of this series. In the back there is a GLOSSARY listing all the characters and and places. In the listing iare detailed information about the characters and places. What is more, for each strange name (that I always struggle with) there is a phonetic spelling to show you how the author intended it to be pronounced. I have read hundreds of books with strangely spelled names and have wanted this feature forever.
Great fantasy. I loved this book.
A wonderful read. I got it as a fill in between books in another series and was unable to put it down.
great character great story line an excellent read
This is another original series to read. There are 4 books plus 1 prequel and 1 companion book. they are all awesome.
I had no idea what to expect from this book or this author. I was hooked from the beginning and listened to the book in one day. The narrator for the audio book is wonderful. I can’t wait for the next book.
great fantasy book. Enjoyed it enough that I’ve already gone out and purchased the next in the series. Lots of characters are thrown at you, but it’s not overwhelming. Plenty of action, a hint of romance, and an interesting future. Worth the time to read it.
Good characters. Kept my attention.
Loved it!
Start off with who the main character who is suddenly attacked. From that point every new character is introduced in a similar fashion until our heroine enters the shadow world. At this point the stoey gets interesting. The reader knows who the benefactor it, what the heroine is descendant of well before the end.
The story is interesting and the weaving of various fantasy characters does give it flavor. A good adolescent read, enjoy. BTW if you’ve forgotten what it’s like to be a young girl, give it a read.
Pretty good character development for the main character. I want to know what happens to her going forward.
A good one time read. Don’t expect anything that is earth shaking.
This was a failed attempt to create an elven Universe divided between light and dark with the Earth in between with vampires thrown in as potential allies. Sound familiar? Implausible plot and completely unlikable characters. This book is a mess.
Interesting fantasy in the land of elves, pixies, and humans. I did not enjoy the unnecessary, token sex written in at stupid times. Why would the characters who are running from danger stop, and enjoy a sexual interlude? There is an Intriguing and interesting story line but the heroine is a cocky, careless gal. I have no interest in seeing what stupid situations she will put herself in in the next books of the series.
