San Diego Dead (Jake Wolfe Book #4) by Mark Nolan is a fast-paced action thriller featuring Jake Wolfe and his retired war dog, Cody. This is my first time to read a book in this series. The plot lends itself to be easily read as a standalone, but multiple characters seem to be carried over from previous books. That said, I loved it so much that I bought the first three books in a bundle pack.
Jake Wolfe is a veteran Marine turned lawyer, but he is also part of a secret covert operation team. He and his retired war-dog, Cody live on a borrowed yacht. Jake’s Marine training, love of country and the strong moral code have him fighting against national security threats and assisting his many friends and brothers-in-arms.
Jake is on vacation with his girlfriend, Sarah and Cody in Cabo San Lucas to relax and whale watch with a fellow veteran and friend, Pez. Pez is hiding secrets that put Jake, Cody and Sarah in the crosshairs of a ruthless Mexican cartel leader, who will do anything to retrieve a stolen package.
Until Jake can unravel the mystery of the package with help from his friends, they are all in mortal danger. And when they discover what the package contains, it becomes a threat to national security. The clock is ticking as Jake and Cody work to destroy the cartel, secure vengeance for his friend and neutralize the threat to the country.
This is an extremely fast-paced and exciting, easy-to-read thriller. The plot is packed full of action, danger, a ruthless cartel, terrorism and human trafficking that does not slow down. Jake is an alpha hero and with his war-dog Cody, they work together to slip out of some very tight situations. There is a large ensemble of secondary characters that work with Jake and Cody that make the story feel more realistic than just a lone hero taking on the world. I really love that Mr. Nolan gives Cody a unique personality and he gives his own third person perspective on his pack leader occasionally. I read this book all in one sitting and I am looking forward to reading the previous books in this series, too.
I recommend this fast-paced thrill ride of an adventure.
Jake and his service dog Cody–both veterans of war and both having lost their partners have bonded totally. Cody is a very intelligent dog who will kill to protect his pack. Cody considers Jake’s girlfriend, a veterinarian, one of his pack! Jake and Cody live on a boat which is just fine with both of them.
The only problem is Jake is part of a very secret government organization-and puts his own and Cody’s life in danger. Luckily Jake is good at what he does–as is Cody. BUT–his girlfriend is getting tired of them disappearing. Jake is kind of thinking of retiring also–but not before he finds the people who killed one of his friends.
There is a lot of violence and soul searching–will Jake and his girlfriend ever come to terms and realize that they can not live without the other.
This is a fast and furious race to not only secure American soil from terrorists but also vengeance for his buddy.
You are going to LOVE Cody–no doubt in my mind. Hint, he is not only a protester who will kill–but also a soft and fuzzy furbaby who love for people he trusts to love and cuddle him!
All Jake wanted was a vacation with his girlfriend Sarah. No such luck. The bad guys are after Jake again, this time a drug lord, and they plan to use Sarah as bait to get him. After a few failed attempts, an accident leaves Jake’s buddy Pez dead and Sarah injured. After returning to the states after an interesting flight home, Jake and his cop buddy Terrell go back to help Pez’ family with the funeral and avenge his death. Lots of action along the way. Cody didn’t “speak” as much in this book as the first two. I missed his snarky comments on human beings and their actions. Read the series in order or you will be a bit lost. Great series.
From the very first sentence to the very last this book moves along at a pace that is AWESOME. Each and every situation these two war vets are in takes the reader on such a visual adventure it feels like we are being dangled from a helicopter along with them.
Any story that lets us understand the dog’s language is a five star story for me. Both protagonists are so vital to the tale. They co-exist perfectly.
I feel like I used every interjection I learned from “Schoolhouse Rock” while reading this story. I also really appreciate the author taking the time to address the reader and educate us as to what is real and what is not.
While this can be read as a standalone, I think it would be best to read the series in order.
San Diego Dead (Jake Wolfe Series Book 4)
By: Mark Nolan
5 out of 5 stars
I absolutely love this series and am always looking forward to the next story. Ever since I first read about Jake Wolfe and his war dog Cody I have been hooked. This book is just the latest amazing read that pulls you in from the very beginning and it is a fast-paced journey that doesn’t end until the final page. It will have you turning pages to find out what happens next. Jake Wolfe is a man that I would want on my side. He is loyal and protective of those he cares about. One of them is his war dog Cody. They have a deep bond that can’t be broken. This story has Jake and Cody searching for a missing item that if not recovered innocent lives are at stake. Will they get to the missing item before a ruthless group of killers does? Read this book to find out. I also enjoyed reading about the many characters that Jake and Cody interact with. There are old friends and those who want those who are evil to face justice. I love how detailed the story is and I when reading I feel like I am right there with the characters. Don’t miss out on a story that will have you reading far into the night in order to finish. Highly recommended.
It wasn’t until I started reading San Diego Dead, Book 4 in the Jake Wolfe Novel Series, that I remembered having read it before. I had first read it over a year ago as a standalone thriller. It was a page turner then, a nonstop, roller coaster thrill ride, a book that I couldn’t put down. This time around it was even more exciting because I’m reading the series in the order in which they were written and I’m aware of all the earlier adventures all the main characters have experienced together. These are six novels that you should read in the order they were written.
One thing that makes this series unique is that many of the secondary characters that Jake and his Marine war dog Cody meet in an earlier story keep reappearing in later stories to play a key role in their adventures. For me, that is the thing that makes this series so realistic, the thing that makes it come alive for me because that’s what would happen in real life.
Jake Wolfe isn’t any superhero, one who goes into battle and comes out unscathed. He’s an expert with knives, guns, and in the martial arts, but he’s not bulletproof. Jake get cut with knives, shot, choked, and almost drowned in these stories. I still have two books to go, but so far Jake nearly dies several times while performing missions for the POETs, a super secret clandestine team created under the direction of the President of the United States. Jake starts his career as a dog handler in the Marine Corps as a rifleman/dog handler where is shot and nearly bleeds to death. During that encounter, his Marine War Dog, Duke, attacks and kills the soldier who shot Jake, saving Jake and his platoon, but dies doing it. Then, while recovering in a military hospital from his near fatal wound, he was recruited by the CIA to do Black Ops. During one operation, Jake becomes enraged by the bureaucrats’ delays and disobeys orders and kills the people that are killing women and children who refuse to enter the sex trade. His handler abandons him and leaves him to die in the desert, but he survives. When this series begins we find Jake working as a photojournalist who gets caught up in an assassination attempt on the wife of a presidential candidate in book 1. Jake loses his job, gets framed for the murder of the lawyers and the attempt to shoot the pregnant future first lady. He is arrested for the crimes he didn’t commit, then released to the custody of the Secret Service and recruited by the POETs where he is sent on super secret missions to protect America from the worse of terrorist attacks. Jake is the man that anyone who has ever worn a uniform can identify with.
If you love a realistic thriller, where ordinary men and women are called upon to do extra-ordinary things to protect and serve, you will love this series.
Have read this entire series and will preorder the next one. Love the lead character and his dog. Realistic so it holds my interest. Well written.
Great! I really enjoyed this book and would read another one by this author. I liked the characters. It had enough action without going overboard.
I have read all of the series. Waiting for the next book.
Fun, easy read. This is one of those books when you still want something to read, but don’t want to work very hard at it.
Very predictable
Be prepared to stay up late. Great read
Pedestrian approach, ok read but expected more.
This fourth book in the Jake Wolfe series by Mark Nolan was another exciting action-filled adventure combined with suspense, romance, violence, death, and of course, Cody the dog. Once again the two main characters, one human and one dog, fight to save America from people who have been declared HVT or High Valued Targets to be eliminated with extreme prejudice and swiftness. Again I am struck by how much Nolan holds the military, including K9s, in such high regard in terms of their dedication and commitment. The author also points a continuing finger at the ever-present battle with PTSD that almost all military, law enforcement, EMTs, and first-responders suffer from. And then there is that super smart and dedicated dog, Cody, who is often smarter than his handler in terms of understanding a situation and responding to it as he has been trained to, as well as how he has adapted himself to respond. I am eagerly awaiting the next chapter in Jake Wolfe’s life. This is a voluntary review of an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Hidden Gems Books.
San Diego Dead is the fourth novel in the Jake Wolfe series. In this latest installment, Jake and his war dog, Cody, are caught up in the crosshairs of a drug cartel. They will have to keep their wits about them to take down the cartel and its boss, El Rojo. Mark Nolan brings us another great action-packed thriller with this novel. I received a copy of this book for an honest review.
Jake and Cody barely survived shark-infested waters on their last mission. Now they, along with Jake’s girlfriend Sarah, are taking a well-deserved vacation in Cabo San Lucas. While there, Sarah is attacked and Jake’s friend Pez is murdered by Rojo, a powerful drug lord. Jake decides it is up to him to end Rojo’s reign. After getting orders for a new mission, Jake goes after Rojo with vengeance.
I liked this story immensely. Jake and Cody are a reckoning force to encounter. But the more Jake wants out, the deeper he has to go to make citizens safe. I can only hope that he and Sarah’s relationship can survive it. Mr. Nolan has hit a home run with this series.
Ex-Marine turned Lawyer Jake Wolfe is finally getting a much needed vacation with his dog Cody and girlfriend Sarah. Though it doesn’t take long for trouble to find them and a relaxing holiday soon turns deadly. This book starts not long after the end of the last book Killer Lawyer, so in that respect its advisable to have read the previous before this, but there is enough back story throughout this book making this a stand alone that doesn’t make it a requirement, but once you read this you will want to pick up the rest, trust me!
There is so much action in this book that you will be keep on your toes as well as the edge of your seat as Jake and Cody once again do anything to protect those he loves as well as protect his country. Jake and Sarah’s relationship is tested as she fears for her life following events on holiday that lead to her having a miscarriage, and ultimately the decision to speak to Jake about being taken out of her hands. My heart broke for them, but there was not much time to dwell on it as Jake is soon off a mission this time without Cody by his side.
Cody is once again the star of this book, his canine relationship with Jake is beyond words, and I know there are dogs in the world that are just as smart as Cody. The story is fast paced and a whirlwind of action and violence as Jake does his upmost to make it home to Sarah and Cody alive and put a stop to the bad guy.
If you love Bond, Bourne and thrillers in general you will love the Jake Wolfe series!
SAN DIEGO DEAD is the fourth instalment in Mark Nolan’s contemporary, adult JAKE WOLFE military, suspense series focusing on former Marine, above Top Secret clandestine Black Ops specialist and attorney Jake Wolfe.
NOTE: SAN DIEGO DEAD includes scenes of violence and implied torture that may not be suitable for more sensitive readers.
Told from several third person perspectives including Jake Wolfe, SAN DIEGO DEAD follows in the wake of Jake Wolfe’s latest mission wherein our hero took down a known Albanian pirate who sold stolen watercraft to the Mexican cartel. Extending his mission in Cabo San Lucas, in an effort to enjoy some downtime with his lady love Sarah, Jake and Sarah, along with Jake’s Marine buddy Pez, will become the target of the cartel, bringing danger and death back home to everyone he knows and loves. From terrorism to human trafficking, drug smuggling and international espionage Jake Wolfe demands entrance into a world that threatens the people back home when the hunt for an unknown ‘package’ becomes personal and deadly.
SAN DIEGO DEAD is an energetic and dynamic story of action and suspense. Along with his military support dog Cody, and the help of numerous secret government agencies, Jake is determined to take down those who have threatened so many lives.
From the outset, Jake Wolfe is a man who expects trouble at every turn: suspicious of everyone, mistrusting on instinct, our hero must endure the loss of friends, and the possibility of losing the woman he loves as his first priority is to the United States of America.
There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, aggressive and spirited characters (several of whom we have met in previous instalments) including Jake’s handlers with the US government Secret Service Agent Shannon McKay; Veterinarian Sarah Chance; Jake’s former Marine buddies Sammy ‘Pez’ Lopez, and Lieutenant Terrell Hayes; Secret Service agents Yvonne Greene and Easton; Cody the wonder dog; SFPD Sergeant Beth Cushman, as well as the requisite evil including cartel leader El Rojo, and the Angel of Death.
SAN DIEGO DEAD is a dramatic, intense and action-packed story with plenty of military and Black Ops jargon but for a man practised in the art of secret military operations and mission, Jake Wolfe is easily found by everyone bent on destroying his life. The premise is intriguing and suspense filled; the characters are numerous and impassioned.
These are really entertaining reads. My husband and I go crazy when a new one is out….and what a cool dog…..wish mine were so well trained
In a way this book reminded me of a James Bond movie. At the beginning, the heroes, Jake Wolfe and his war dog, Cody, are in a dangerous situation wondering how they’ll get out of it.
Like the movies, the heroes find even more danger. Plus there are villains to thwart, people to avenge, and lives to safe.
This is the fourth book in the series and if you haven’t read the prior books, you’ll definitely be lost. If you haven’t already enjoyed a Jake Wolfe adventure, grab the other books, read them through and see if you don’t agree these heroes are among the best.
