In the twelfth century, merchants gather at a summertime fair–but when one of them is found dead in a river, a crime-solving monk must step in. St. Peter’s Fair is a grand, festive event, attracting merchants from across England and beyond. There is a pause in the civil war racking the country in the summer of 1139, and the fair promises to bring some much-needed gaiety to the town of … town of Shrewsbury–until the body of a wealthy merchant is found murdered in the river Severn. Was Thomas of Bristol the victim of murderous thieves? And, if so, why were his valuables abandoned nearby?
Brother Cadfael, that shrewd but kindly monk, offers to help the merchant’s lovely niece Emma. But while he is searching for the killer, Thomas of Bristol’s wares are ransacked and two more men are murdered. Emma almost certainly knows more than she is telling–as others will soon realize. Cadfael desperately races to save the young girl, knowing that in a country at war with itself, betrayal can come from any direction, and even good intentions can kill.

Entertaining easy to read.
Would read more.
I have read every single book in this series, and every other book by this author. The Cadfael stories are all exceptionally well written and are so fascinating that I could never put one down. I only wish that the author had lived long enough to write more!!
Another great Cadfael story; couldn’t put it down.
All the Cadfael books are terrific. Must read historical medivals.
I like all of the books, they use their brains no modern things too help.
Highly recommend all the Brother Cadfael books for a great sense of times England 12th century, and description of the English border area, and a good mystery.
Never got past page 107. Just did not hold my interest. Finally gave up rather than waste time. There are too many books I want to read.
Great page turner and fascinating historical detail. This series is wonderful!
Wonderful historical mystery

I love the Cadfael series. Good writing, intriguing plot
I love the Cadfael series. Great characters and the historical research is outstanding.
I love the Brother Cadfael series by Ellis Peter. Stint Peter’s Fair has interesting characters, a plot that looks predictable- but isn’t. It’s also a look at a time long gone by. Set in Medieval times, it shows the Dark Ages weren’t dark at all, but filled with interesting people who, like people today. want a good place to have a family, make a good living in a suitable way, and that there was more than empty superstition going on in those days, which were as politically dangerous as our own.
Lots of twists and turns in the Good Brother’s stories, and this one does not fail!
I enjoyed all of the books in this series.
I love Ellis’ characters and his descriptive abilities.
I enjoy this series. Very entertaining.
Always enjoy these mysteries.
I am in the process of reading the series of which St Peter’s Fair is one. The story takes place in the 1100’s in England during the war between King Stephen and Maude. Cadfael, the main character in St Peter’s Fair is interesting and very intelligent, knows his human nature. I am an avid, could say, addicted reader and Ellis Peters Cadfael series is my very favorite of all the reading I’ve done. If it were possible it would get many more stars than 5.
