Instead, she’s more like a carefully crafted character living out a pre-scripted … carefully crafted character living out a pre-scripted story. DANGER RISES UP THE CHARTS
From the start, Bree sees her temporary bodyguard as a player, and Dez sees Bree as a spoiled rich girl. But when they’re thrown together in a fight for survival, both must learn to trust. Bree a well known pop star, coming to Lantern Beach for a concert. This was a smaller event than her others, and then she would have some down town. Before the concert ended shots were fired, and that was the start of Bree learning what her Business manager was really like. The endless list of people he had unpaid and mismanagement of funds for his own gain. Who was her real friends, she could think of one or two maybe, family said good bye to when when she left to follow her dream. The plot was good, got to be a little long before winding it up. Staying here in Lantern Beach will give Dez her bodyguard and her time to get to know one another. Good story giving a look into the life of a singer.
4.5 stars
Dez Rodriguez, former Navy SEAL & current member of an elite security team called Blackout (made up of his fellow SEAL teammates and headquartered on the island of Lantern Beach, NC), is a man with “muscles that could be seen for miles, and a smile that could be seen even farther.” I’ll give you a moment to swoon appropriately at that description … He’s protective, sometimes broody, prone to long-held feelings of guilt & a sense of duty, but also bighearted and a loyal friend. His reputation as a player may be exaggerated but he’s definitely good at flirting when it counts.
Bree Jordan is a pop star whose career has skyrocketed, though she disagrees with many of her manager’s decisions. She wants to sing her own songs – songs with depth, not the ‘bubble gum’ fluff that is responsible for her rise to fame. Her reputation as a spoiled, rich starlet may also be exaggerated, but she definitely knows how to throw her wealth around when it counts. She lives under a lot of pressure to keep up a certain image but really just wants to be herself.
The tension between these two vivid characters keeps sparks flying throughout this quick-read story. Between their definite romantic attraction to each other and the high-stakes suspense that has them – and readers – on their toes from start to finish, the electricity crackles like a summer storm off the ocean. And buckle up for that ending – wow!
I loved getting to know Dez more – my interest in him had been piqued in Dark Water and I was curious about his backstory. It was nice to see a couple of peeks into the Cuban culture that gave him part of his heritage, and I also enjoyed seeing him directly in that role of protector that he makes so swoony. Bree became a favorite character, and her character growth throughout the novel was done really well.
Bottom Line: A great read from beginning to end, with a yummy hero & an engaging heroine, a charming island with a host of characters and intriguing backstories, a team of former SEALs with an unsolved mystery between them, and a message of finding your own worth and staying true to who you were created to be. Definitely recommended for romantic suspense fans!
(I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I borrowed from Kindle Unlimited.)
One thing I enjoy about Christy Barritt’s series is how she takes one story thread and weaves it throughout but each story can still stand on it’s own. This is true with Safe Harbor, book two in the Lantern Beach Blackout series.
A pop star, a bodyguard, and lots of potential culprits keep this story moving. Dez and Bree make a good team. It was also nice to see Cassidy, Ty, and many of the original Lantern Beach gang.
I tend to skip around with Barritt’s stories. Not because I’m bored with them but because there are just so many of them! But they’re all entertaining, quick, and easy reads.
Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
When life turns out to not be what you thought it should be, what do you do? When everyone you feel close to is getting hurt and you feel it’s your fault, what do you do? Is success really all it’s made out to be?
These are the things Bree Jordan had on her mind as she tried to pull her life together after a bad experience at one of her concerts. Can she survive all the attacks on her life and keep those around her safe? Who is really the one behind all of this?
In this second book of the Blackout Series by Christy Barritt, we are sent on a tailspin of events and the Blackout guys are back to help keep order and maybe help find out the mystery of who’s the one causing all this drama. However, there’s an undertow of threat from their previous mission that killed their team leader. The mystery is still out there and they are still not sure what really is happening.
This book, like the other Lantern Beach books, has many of the wonderful characters who live on this sweet island. It also brings out the new characters of the Blackout guys. We get to see more of what they do and understand their relationships with each other.
Christy Barritt’s characters seem so real, they just jump off the pages of her books. I’m always looking around to see if I can see them. Their issues are often just like mine, (except for the running from danger stuff!) and they deal with some of the same things I deal with. I love how the author weaves in a strong hope in God’s protective hand, and the realization that without God, life can be much more difficult.
If you LOVE mystery, suspense, and action, with a bit of romance mixed in, you will love this book and the whole series! I highly recommend you pick it up. You won’t be disappointed.
The way the author writes this book keeps you on the edge of your chair and won’t let you put the book down until you are finished; this is what I love about reading a book by Christy Barritt. I know I’ll be captured from the very first line.
I was given this book by the author which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
A great action packed book that was hard to put down. I can’t wait to read more from this author.
This action-packed second tale in the Blackout series was all about Dez, the former Navy SEAL turned bodyguard and Bree, the well-meaning, but naive pop star. Someone wants her dead and Dez has to figure out the mystery while fighting his feelings for a client. There is also the underlying mystery that threads all four novels in the Blackout series…someone who wants the Blackout team dead as well. Overall, a great story with a lovely romance.
Excitement on Lantern Beach
A music festival comes to the island, and the Blackout team is on security detail. Things get personal when one of the star singer’s life is threatened.
Another great story in this series. Loved the storyline between Dez and Bree because it was something new and unique. Can’t wait for the next book!
Safe Harbor by Christy Barritt is the perfect read for anyone who loves romantic suspense. Dez is a former Seal with regrets. When he gets to help protect a pop star from a stalker, they both get more than they expected. Ms Barritt is the master of clean romance with suspense that never ends. I love this whole series! I received a digital copy of this book from the author with no obligations. These opinions are entirely my own.
“I’m not done with you yet.”
Lantern Beach’s inaugural off season music festival was supposed to draw visitors to the island during a time of the year when tourism lagged behind . . . however, things rapidly digressed when shots were fired during a premier event, exposing a young pop star as the likely target. Why would anyone want to kill Bree Jordan?
Dez Rodriguez moved quickly to pull his client out of harm’s way. As a former Navy SEAL, Dez was acquainted with being in the line of fire, but this time he was being paid to keep Bree out of it. As Dez and his fellow security team members partner with local law enforcement, it appears that many of those who appear to be friends with the popular recording artist are in fact out for their own gain. Spending time with the lovely celebrity should have convinced Dez to maintain fierce professional boundaries, but there are moments when . . . he could swear that she considered him to be her “safe harbor”.
“Run into a place where my dreams can be my own.”
In this second installment of Christy Barritt’s Lantern Beach Blackout Mysteries, the Private Security Team Blackout, located on the Outer Banks of NC, take on the task of extra security during a music festival. Dez is assigned to protect Bree, a pop star singer, who unbeknownst to the team, already has had a stalker and death threats. Bree and Dez immediately jump to conclusions about the other. Bree sees him as a playboy who just loves ’em and leaves ’em, and Dez sees her as a spoiled rich celebrity who expects to be adored. But at her concert, a shooter begins shooting, wounding band members and her fans, and Bree fears for her life. As Dez and the team work to find the culprit and to keep her safe, Dez and Bree begin to see how wrong they were about each other. I love getting back to Lantern Beach and catching up with characters from previous books. Although it is nice to have read the previous Lantern Beach Series, this series can stand on it’s own, as all the characters are appropriately introduced. Action, romance, murder, and suspense all blend together for an exciting read.
I have enjoyed reading Christy Barritt’s books for years. This book is part of what I would call her more mature mystery/thrillers. The action is fast paced and exciting. Although this book is part of a series, each book tells a complete story. I hate series books that end with a cliff hanger, and will stop reading an author that does that. Anyway, her books are exciting and I have a hard time putting them down. I also appreciate the interweaving of faith struggles and lessons without preachiness. All in all I would recommend this book to adult readers.
4.5 Stars
Popstar Bree Jordan has a stalker. She’s in Lantern Beach as the headliner for the First Annual Lantern Beach Music Festival when things take a serious turn. Shots are fired during her set. Blackout team member Dez Rodriguez is her bodyguard for the concert and gets her to safety. But with the stalker escalating their attacks, Bree hires him to be her full-time bodyguard. Can he keep her safe or will this stalker get their wish to end the rising starlet’s life?
Safe Harbor was so good. It’s one of my recent favorites from Christy Barritt. I love books that follow celebrities so that just added to my enjoyment. The suspense was high and the mystery was great. It was full of twists and turns. I never knew what would happen next and didn’t figure out the culprit until the shocking reveal. I’m can’t wait to check out Griff’s story next!
I absolutely loved this book. The characters really come to life in this book. The reader gets to know them on a personal level. There is a lot of suspense which keeps you wanting to keep reading. Genuine love begins to develop between the two main characters. This is a definite must read book in this series!
Keep those trips back to Lantern Beach coming!! Safe Harbor is the second installment in the Blackout series. This one stars Blackout team member, Dez Rodriguez. Dez is hired to protect singer, Bree Jordan when it becomes very apparent someone is after her and will stop at nothing to hurt her. After many twists and turns and wrong guesses on my part, I was completely blown away at the end when it was revealed who was after Bree!!
Although this can be read as a standalone, do yourself a favor and read the entire Lantern Beach series because this novel includes visits and updates from all the characters from Lantern Beach we as readers have grown to love.
I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Can’t wait for next book in series!
Really enjoyed it and the series!
Hold on, Lantern Beach fans both old and new. Christy Barritt’s latest Blackout edition outpaces your reading speed and efforts to guess Bree Jordan’s deadly stalker. Action-packed pages will produce enjoyable reading time.
Dez Rodriguez leads her security team after an attempt at Bree’s music festival performance. Danger and sparks fly quickly between the two while law enforcement rushes to help.
I received a complimentary copy of the book without obligation. This review is my opinion
Fast-moving with danger lurking everywhere, it seems—isn’t Lantern Beach a safe haven? Pop singer Bree Jordan’s concert ended tragically, and now she must fight to stay alive. With the Blackop crew guarding her, she should be safe, right? Her bodyguard Dez Rodriguez faces the challenges, but the risk keeps increasing. How can they keep the star from harm? Plenty of suspense, and I never guessed the guilty party. Another Christy Barritt winner! I received a copy from the author. All opinions are my own.
I had an ARC copy of this book, but this is my voluntary and honest opinion. Christy does a fantastic job of keeping you turning pages and on your toes guessing who is behind the mysterious happenings. Her characters and their problems are very believable and interesting. She keeps you eager for the next book in the series, but they could all be read independently.
Former Navy SEAL Dez Rodriguez has what should be an easy assignment: guard singer Bree Jordan during a concert on Lantern Beach.
This easy task turns deadly when a shooter aims for Bree. His temporary assignment turns a bit more permanent—and he is not thrilled about it. Babysitting a spoil “star” isn’t what he signed up for.
Could he be wrong and too hasty in his judgment? And who wants Bree dead?
