“An intense, thrilling page-turner sure to satisfy any fan of the [crime] genre.” –Goodreads Review ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ She read him stories and tucked him at night. She’d kiss his forehead and wish him “pleasant dreams.” But all this is in the past and nothing more than a haunting memory as she looks into his unseeing eyes… Her baby is dead. Martha Cooper has been living with a horrible secret for years, but … with a horrible secret for years, but it all came crashing down when the son she was forced to walk away from turns up dead. Now a grown man of twenty-two, Chris was found washed up on a riverbank during a winter thaw, and it’s Detective Madison Knight who rushes to the crime scene. Martha is quick to point Madison to her ex-husband and the boy’s father, Marcus Randall, for his murder.
But Marcus isn’t about to go down without a fight. As a wealthy and corrupt business tycoon, Marcus pulls on his friendship with the police chief, and the two of them hinder Madison’s investigation. What they fail to see is the resistance only makes Madison more suspicious that Marcus has something to hide. She’s also not about to be bullied into silence—even if it pits her against two of the most powerful men in the city. But Madison will seriously need to consider whether a father betrayed his own son or if it was someone else who killed Chris. If she’s going to find out the truth, she’ll need to follow the evidence and push through all the lies. But Madison quickly discovers that nothing comes without personal cost. Not even justice.
A brilliant, heart-pounding mystery full of twists. Perfect for fans of Robert Dugoni, J.D. Robb, and Lisa Regan.

A great detective mystery. A female detective is given a murder case. Find the killer of a young man who is the son of a powerful rich man. However, the father is not willing to help solve the case. The police chief tries to stop her investigation at every turn. She finds the chief is “owned” by this powerful man. What are they hiding? But this …
Intriguing. Couldn’t figure out “who dunit.”
Carolyn Arnold’s Detective Madison Knight books have great intricate plots. I love the details, but I can’t get past my dislike of the main character. Her character flaws constantly pull me out of the book while I am reading it. Obviously my issues with the main character havn’t kept me from reading this series, because of my love of police …
my 1st book with Madison King, very interesting plot line that kept me guessing all the time. very interesting characters.
The words flow by smoothly. The plot goes along well and kept me entertained from start to finish.
Love all her books
Good read.
I enjoyed reading this and was sorry when it ended.
Really good book
Loved the story line. Neat premise. The ending was a little flat I felt. I’d been merrily bowling along until that point. I didn’t feel that justice was done, which is a must for mystery-suspense type novels. Some hideous edits unfortunately. At one point a waiter was called Mario and then when he backed away from the table he was Tony. The …
Really did not like the main character. Although the author was probably going for a hard bitten female detective, I thought she just came of as bitchy, both personally and professionally.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Read it in 2 days
Like most books, one must remember the characters are not real — some are great & some make bad decisions. This series keeps me reading and sometimes guessing.
If you’re a fan of fiction, you’ll enjoy this.
This book was very entertaining and held your interest. Did not want to put it down.
Interesting characters, good story, kept my interest
Lots of twists. Enjoyed it
Good primary story. Most of the story was beleivable although the insubordination most likey would not be tolerated in a real law enforcement environment. The secondary plot left a lot to be desired. I don’t think it added to the story, but rather detracted attention from the primary story.
I did not particularly find this book interesting, as it did not grab me by the seat of my pants and hold my interest. I am holding on to it though as perhaps I may read it again at a later date to see if my interest changes. Thank you.
Ending was kind of a let down after wonderful job of building up to it. Other than that, great read.
