California private investigator Kinsey Millhone is hired to solve a decades-old cold case in this “undeniably entertaining” (Los Angeles Times) #1 New York Times bestseller from Sue Grafton.Cases don’t get much colder than that of Violet Sullivan, who disappeared from her rural California town in 1953, leaving behind an abusive husband and a seven-year-old named Daisy. But PI Kinsey Millhone has … Daisy. But PI Kinsey Millhone has promised the now adult Daisy she’ll try her best to locate Violet, dead or alive. All signs point to a runaway wife—the clothes that disappeared; the secret stash of money Violet bragged about; the brazen flirtations she indulged in with local men, including some married ones.
Kinsey tries to pick up a trail by speaking to those who remember Violet—and perhaps were more involved in her life than they let on. But the trail could lead her somewhere very dangerous. Because the case may have gone cold, but some people’s feelings about Violet Sullivan still run as hot as ever…

LOVED every one of her ‘ABC’ books and want more!!
I have read all of Sue Grafton’s alphabet books. Kinsey is an all-time favorite character of mine. Extremely relatable.
Grafton’s S is for Silence is not what I would call a typical mystery. A bit old-fashioned in that there’s little actual violence. The story is more cerebral, but fascinating in its way. After 34 years, Violet Sullivan’s disappearance is still not solved. Her daughter, Daisy, has lived with the loss of her mother, agonizing over being abandoned, as most people in Serena Station believe Violet ran off with another man.
When Daisy hires Kinsey Millhone, PI, to determine what happened to her mother, it almost seems too late to find out. However, Kinsey’s questions raise the ire of a few suspects, enough so that her own safety is in danger.
There are a lot of suspects and their spouses and children and keeping up with the names and their relationship to the victim is a bit distracting. However, it’s worth it. I do recommend the novel for light reading that is quite satisfying.
Kinsey Milhone is such a wonderful character. In this era of tech it is nice to go back in time where everything was done without computers. Great plots. If you love female PI stories, Sue Grafton hit the mark. RIP Sue.
I have read the entire alphabet series so far. I have never been disappointed.

I love Sue Grafton Mysteries, I am now reading them all a second time. I love the characters and it takes place in a city I am very familiar with. Every time I read one of her books it’s like meeting an old friend and going home.
Sue Grafton never disappoints.
Very disappointing. Way to slow. Too much detail, too little story!
