A wonderfully well written second chance romance a standalone within the series. It does however have a HEA but ends on a cliffhanger as it leads you into the next in the series as your on the edge of you seat in anticipation for Ford’s story. This engaging atoryline is written in dual POVs and mostly takes place over a two week period of time. Its full of angst and anguish where secrets and circumstances outside of their control drove a wedge right between them years ago now four years later truth explodes between them. The characters are interesting, well-developed, complex, realistic and have with real life issues. I loved how the story comes full circle in the epilogue. An amazing read.

This book was fantastic, I wanted this story so bad and I wasn’t let down at all. It took me on such an emotional roller coaster ride I didn’t want to get off. This story was written well and will have you with a book hangover.
On the surface of this story you might think this is just another poor girl meets rich guy in high school. They fall in love but life works against them to tear them apart but a second chance reveals the secrets that forced them apart and true love wins the day. And frankly it is just that, however it is a really super well written story that pushes the emotions high. Avery has done whatever she has to do to keep her family together. She has sacrificed everything for herself including her love of Emmett to ensure the safety and well being of her younger sister and her broken and drug addicted father. Emmett does not understand how Avery’s life really is because she works hard to hide the details from him, so when it all blows up he can’t see any possibilities other than what he is lead to believe. When fate throws them together again they have to work hard at getting past the lies, secrets and insecurities in order to regain the forever love they had before but the big question is can they? I loved how much depth there was to this story, how the writing didn’t just tell you a story but had you feeling the story. Wonderfully written, wonderfully told. I highly recommend giving this one a read.

*Sigh* How much I love second chance romances!
This is my first book by the author and, though it’s a standalone in The Kings of Rittenhouse Series, I’ll be checking out the rest of the stories in it because I was really intrigued by the rest of the characters of Ruthless King, they were all really fun.
I fell in love with this story since the beginning. With every turn of the pages I felt tugs at my heart with the angst that comes with broken promises, resentment and the remnats of a young love. When I started getting peeks at what went down between Emmett and Avery all those years ago, I could actually feel my heart breaking for them and with them. I love that, even when they thought of the pain of their past, they also recall how pure and beautiful their love was.
This book took me on an emotional ride. One minute I was laughing, and at the next one I either felt like sobbing or getting absolutely mad. There were so many times I wanted to punch Em, and then shake Avery to get all the truth out of her. Each of their interactions was filled up with emotion. The chemistry and passion between these two is always there, even when they are fighting. But what is undeniable, is how much they love each other.
Heartfelt, emotional and enthralling.

Emmett and Avery’s love story is amazing! The tension that builds throughout this book hooks the reader and you can’t put it down! Maya has done another fabulous job for the Kings of Rittenhouse! I can’t wait for another!
Awesome Second Chance Romance!
The tumultuous story of Emmett and Avery had me up all night until I finished. Amazing, powerfully written and emotional story full of angst, heartbreak, and truly toxic parents. It’s no wonder both have issues with trusting one another. I love that they were able to get past their misunderstandings and worked together for a happy ending. Enjoy!
This is the first book I’ve read of Maya Hughes and look forward to reading more of the series. I received an arc copy and am happy to leave my honest review.
A wonderful steamy, second chance romance!
Another story that I couldn’t stop reading.
Loved every single word of it.
Avery really had a hard past. She was put under the pressure and she broke. Of course she did. Everything was on her. I really admire her, because she has an amazing character. She is devoted to her family without a doubt. I love that about her. She was willing to sacrifice her own happines for her precious little sister and their father.
I was mad at her father for being so weak.
Emmet is head over heels in love with Avery, so he was just crushed when he witnessed the horrible moment. He couldn’t think rationally, so he just stormed away and didn’t bother with talking about it. Avery didn’t even know what to do and how to react. She was ashamed of her father and of Emmet’s parents. They are worthless parents and I despise them. They are horrible. I don’t know why people like them even have kids.
I really love this bunch of guys and am very sorry that I haven’t read the first two books yet, because I really wonder what happened between them. But I will get to them soon enough.

I absolutely loved this story!! I have been waiting for Avery and Emmett’s book since the prequel for this series! They were high school sweethearts and had the world in front of them until a major misunderstanding tears them apart and flips both their worlds upside down. Avery has had a hard time of things as she is trying to take care of her sister and keep everything going in the house while her dad makes stupid mistake after stupid mistake, while keeping her sister, and everyone else, in the dark. Her heart is completely broken but she knows she has to keep going for her sister and believes that maybe Emmett is better off without her. Emmett has shut himself off from any true relationship since Avery. He seems to have a timeline of about 3 months before he breaks any semblance of one off. They have been avoiding each other, until now when they end up in a situation where they really can’t ignore or avoid each other anymore. There is quite a bit that has gone on that Emmett has absolutely no idea about and Avery isn’t sure how to tell him once they work out a small piece of things. The sex is explicit and they have years of cooped up tension so once they get going, it’s on lol. They both know that they have a lot more to work out to actual make a go of things this time around but both are a little leery about everything. Neither wants to rock the boat at first, they are so invested and they just want things to work out. This book held my attention from beginning to end! There was a lot going on between the characters and they had obstacles coming from everywhere and I was so glad that they had their friends around them to keep pushing them in the right direction. This story was written and flowed very well. It’s not short but there’s no way it could be with this couple and their story. I absolutely cannot wait for the next book in this series and am excited to see the updates from the previous couples again. I really hope it is Ford’s book!
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Ruthless King is a really great, quick read. I loved the storyline and the flow of the book. It is part of a series, but each is a standalone withing the series so they can be read independently. It is a great second chance romance with just enough drama to keep you interested, but not so much that it distracts you from the story. I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting a quick romance with a sweet HEA.
It is finally here!! I waited soooooo long for Em and Avery’s story and it was worth the wait. They definetly keep you engrossed in their story. At times it was heart breaking but so worth it in the end. They are my favorite couple in the group and deserve some happiness. Definitely a must read!

Four years have passed since the high school breakup when Avery Davis tore Emmett Cunning’s heart apart. He went on to reach his dream of becoming a professional hockey player for the NHL. But he never forgot Avery. A crushing pain like that is hard to get over and it affected all other relationships he tried. When a decision puts them back together again, old feelings resurface – but trust needs to be rebuilt slowly. And keeping secrets about what happened back then is not a good way to do that.
This book was well written and allows the reader to actually share what the characters are experiencing. Will Avery and Emmett be able to get over what happened? Will they have the courage to rebuild their relationship that, despite the pain of the betrayal, still did not crush the love they each held? Definitely a book you will want to read!
This is an emotional story filled with realistic feelings and situations. I liked how the author, Maya Hughes, touched on the subject of drug abuse, alcohol abuse, neglect, starvation and poverty. These occurrences exist in real life. Ms. Hughes tackles the story in a very down to earth manner. Very practical and logical. It was a heart wrenching experience to think about what Avery did for the people she loved. She sacrificed so much that there was hardly anything left for herself. Emmett is a trust fund kid. He really never understood the pressure Avery was under. Avery had to grow up too early in life to survive. Whereas Emmett was just a teenager who had everything he needed except the love of his parents. I felt bad for Emmett when he discovered so many people, he thought he trusted, kept horrific secrets from him. When things started to crumble around him, he reacted to what he saw not knowing everything he saw was not how it seemed. Avery and Emmett had so many problems and baggage to work through. It was difficult to read how they both suffered. Their suffering was not of their own making which made reading this so much more distressing. This is a good book and I would encourage everyone to read it. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I have been waiting for Avery and Emmett’s story. They were high school sweethearts but a presumed betrayal caused a 4 year separation. Emmett is so hurt that no one can mention Avery’s name. The mere mention of her name will cause him to jump from a moving car. Emmett and Avery are financial opposites. He comes from a wealthy family but his parents are emotionally absent. All he wanted was for them to give him some attention. His family is his friends and Avery. He goes overboard with buying things for them. It seems he wants to use his money to buy their attention, It’s not necessary but it’s hard for him to control it. Avery is has been taking care of his father and sister since she was 13. Her father is an addict and pretty much absent. Avery had to grow up fast. She would do anything to protect those she love including Emmett. When they meet again she still tries to protect him. Things get worse before they get better. This is a story filled with tension and hot scenes that will make you want a Emmett of your own. Fall in love with this great group of friends.

Ruthless King (Kings of Rittenhouse #3) written by Maya Hughes, is a second chance enemy to lovers story. Although this is the third book in the series, it is my opinion this book can be read as a standalone book. I would recommend that you read the prequel to the series, Kings of Rittenhouse – A Shameless Prequel, and as a bonus, the book is free on Kindle. The prequel introduces the reader to all the main characters and sets up the whole series. Ruthless King is told as a dual point of view, going between Emmett and Avery, so we get to hear both sides to their story.
The story starts off four years after high school but does look back periodically teasing the reader about Emmett and Avery’s history. Emmett and Avery meet in high school, and from the first moment, Emmett sees Avery he knows she is the one for him. Emmett Cunning is your typical trust-fund kid who seems to have everything. Avery Davis is the girl from the wrong side of the tracks who is only at Rittenhouse Prep because her father works there as the janitor.
Emmett, now a professional hockey player, comes back to hang out, party and spend the summer at the Jersey shore with all his King hockey buddies. He has not forgotten or forgiven Avery for what she “did” back in high school. He is still heartbroken and entirely closed off to all longterm relationships. Avery has been hanging on by a thread for the last four years, just trying to get her kid sister through high school. Avery has put her life on hold and now that her sister has graduated Avery has let her best friend talk her into going down the shore with them.
All Emmett and Avery’s friends rent a house at the Jersey shore, and of course, the two meet up there. That is when the sparks really start to fly. Secrets are revealed, twists and turns and things happen that I didn’t see coming. I enjoyed these to characters so much. Emmett is so kind-hearted and such a big sweet teddy bear, and loves with all his heart and just wants to be part of a family who loves him. Avery has experienced much heartache in her life, and she is continually trying to protect and keep her family together. These two characters are so intense together, from being each other first love and then on to cause each other so much pain. They have both changed so much in the years they were apart, will they be able to get past all the secrets, manipulation and misunderstandings? Can they ever and love and trust each other again?
Maya Hughes has given us a well-written book with exceptional character development. This series is definitely worthy of binge reading. I have not read the first two books in this series, but I plan to make them my next two books. I highly recommend this book!
***I kindly received an ARC of this book by way of Booksprout. I was not contacted, asked or required to leave a review to read this book. I received no compensation, financial or otherwise. This is my honest review.***
What an absolutely fabulous book this was. Avery and Emmett were lovers when they were younger. Then something terrible happened and they split up. And his very wealthy parents had something to do with it as well. Now, Avery’s sister is about to graduate and Emmett and his parents are there. Can anything ever happen between them again, or is Emmett’s hatred for Avery so deep that it would be impossible? This book was such an enjoyable read and I am sure I would read anything this author wrote. Just hope I get another ARC from her. A very deinitve five-star read for me.
This book was about misunderstandings, secrets and lies. They can ruin a relationship! Emett’s parents totally neglect him which destroys his self esteem. He substitutes his neglectful parents with close friend. But he feels he has to pay for everything for them to keep being his friends. When his parents delay his trust fund and he’s broke he finally realizes his friends are there for him because they love him like family not because of his money! This book is centered around him and his high school sweetheart and home misunderstandings and secret can destroy a relationship faster than anything. I thought it was well written and well thought out. It was a book about romance but it carried with it important lessons. I really enjoyed this book!
