My d*ck never got me in half as much trouble as my heart…We were high school sweethearts. I was head over heels for her and no one could tell me we weren’t going to last forever. College? Going pro? My family’s money? None of it mattered. She was all I needed. Then she ripped my heart out. But I’m not going to let that happen again. She’s back. Invading my life and acting like she was the … Invading my life and acting like she was the wronged one. The pain is still there, but I can’t keep my eyes off her. I can’t stop thinking about her and how much was left unsaid between us. Being this close is making me question everything I thought I knew about her.
This time everything will be on my terms. Everything…

Ruthless…maybe. Heartless…not as much as he wants to be
Ruthless King is the third book of the Rittenhouse Kings series. However, it’s my first foray into their world. I regret that but nothing to do but go back and read the others.
Lovers to murdering each other with their eyes. Enemies doesn’t begin to explain the toxicity between these two. History isn’t quite in the past when these two can’t stand in the same room without it bludgeoning them. . A love So overwhelming turned lethal-and not in a good way.
It was quite the winding journey to get them to that HEA and though I never doubted it, they tend to get in their own way. Lots of love for the Kings and I look forward to the others finding their love.
Maya Hughes’ Ruthless King is a wonderfully written second chance romance. It has all the things you’d expect, misunderstandings leading and pain that are eventually explained and worked through – but how this is all achieved is what sets this novel apart. Beautifully drawn lead and supporting characters and a deliciously well written plot make this a truly enjoyable story. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend.
The moment Emmett met Avery he knew she was the one he was supposed to spend forever with, but unfortunately it didn’t quite turn out that way. After a big misunderstanding, that lead to her breaking his heart, they split, and went their separate ways. He has tried his best to move on, but every girl that has followed has never made it past the three month mark, mainly because he always tries his damnedest to find something wrong with them. There has only been one woman to get to his heart, and she did a number on it, and he isn’t about to let history repeat itself! Which sounds all well and good, until life brings Avery crashing back into his world again…
Within the pages of Ruthless King you will find a heart-wrenching second chance reunion story that will inspire smiles, tears, and lots of swoons! This one really did a number on my heart, just when I thought these two were making headway on their happily ever after, some other catastrophe would be thrown onto their path and reek havoc on their world, and my poor heart. This couple endured so much on their little journey, and at times I wondered if it would end like I hoped it would, but as always, love found a way to prevail. This was another stellar addition to the Kings of Rittenhouse series, it held my interest throughout, tugged on the heartstrings, made me blush, and left my heart happy… which is a complete win in my book! Highly recommend!!
I did not read the first two books but that didn’t stop me from being able to immerse myself in the story just fine. You go from Avery to Emmett’s point of view building up to the whole story behind their history. It was so frustrating waiting to find out what the heck happened. Then you realize they were young and didn’t know how to truly communicate and express their fears to each other. This is a well written and at times a very intense story.
3.5 stars
“You’re the constant in my life, in my heart, my everything.”
Even though Ruthless King is the third book in this series, it was my first. It’s also my first by Maya Hughes and I must say, I’m quite surprised and impressed. Don’t let my 3 star rating blind you. This book is a great entertaining read. It’s filled with drama and heartache. A very likable, damn hot and vulnerable hero and a strong, admirable heroine give this second chance sports romance the right drive.
“It had only taken almost losing him again to see that I’d rather he saw all the imperfections than be without him.”
Although the writing was good and nicely paced, I wished for more character development and seeing more of the couple Emmet and Avery. Furthermore I had some trouble with the reasons for separation, from both sides. But that really is a matter of opinion.
Nevertheless this book got me intrigued to give the other books in this series a chance and I hopefully find the time soon to continue reading this series.
Ruthless King is an emotional enemies to lovers – second chance sports romance, I really enjoyed reading!
I was captivated from the very first page with the well written storyline and characters that were so well rounded that I had a very hard time putting this book down! I look forward to reading more from this author!
You really need to read this book! If you have not read the prequel, “The Kings of Rittenhouse, A Shameless King Prequel” I would highly suggest reading that one first because for me it really sets up this book. It is not totally necessary but it does make this book shine so much brighter.
This is a full novel all about Emmett and Avery yes we do get to see the other characters from Rittenhouse Prep that we met in the prequel. This book answers so many questions but let me tell you that it does take a while to do so and in doing that our author gives us one humdinger of a great read. It took me on a journey that I did not expect to go on and ended up right where I was hoping I would be. I can not wait to read more from this author and more in this circle of friends. These books can not be released fast enough for me. LOL but i know the author has to write as the characters speak to her so I will impatiently wait for the next release in this series.
A well written story with nice storyline and plot. Written in dual POV which gives the reader more of the feelings and thoughts of the main characters and brings the story closer to the reader. Likeable characters who develops well through the story.
A second chance romance. They were high school sweethearts but broke up and now she is back. But can they forget the past and get a HEA together? A passionate romance with a great chemistry between the main characters. She is strong and has to sacrifice a lot for her family. He is rich and go for his dream but still the tension between is there. I hate that they do not communicate with each other. A lot could have been avoided if they have done that. This story felt too long because of this and gave a lot unnessessary drama to it. I was disappointed that the reason for all this was not more than what is was.
Engaging read.
Avery and Emmett’s story is a gorgeous second chance romance that all the feels. Loved it!!
Oh them Kings of Rittenhouse guys!!! I am loving this series and I kissed the 2nd book somehow smh so I’m going to go read it now but they are stand alones so even though its probably better to read them in order it’s not necessary. But as far as this book its finally back to Avery and Emmett and it was so worth the wait!!!! The secrets that are uncovered in this book and all the hardships and difficulties that both are put through is so heartbreaking. I cried for them to both and wanted to beat some people silly also. I thought I was going to throw my kindle a couple of times. And I love books like this, you know the ones that make you feel so much you just can’t contain the emotions or sometimes even know what to do with all them feels your feeling. Yeah it’s one of those. And the little hint for the next book!!!! Oooooo yes girl I can’t wait, bring it on now!!!! I highly recommend this book!!!! – By Tina
I read the free prequel, “Kings of Rittenhouse,” which gave a very nice introduction to a group of friends during their time in high school. Ruthless King is the second book in the series and features Emmett and Avery who dated in high school until a heartbreaking situation happened that tore them apart. Fast forward years later and they still can’t stop thinking about one another. The men in this book play professional hockey and remained close friends and they decide to get a shore house one summer thus reuniting the two. They never discussed what had happened nor had closure or forgiveness, and their time together is filed with a tension-filled push and pull and will they or won’t they…
This book was very well written and kept me engaged and filled with angst and uncertainty the entire time. Emmett wore his heart on his sleeve and was such a good, generous man despite being raised by selfish, neglectful wealthy parents. It was so very sad to read that all he wanted was to feel loved. He had any worldly possession he wanted and it didn’t matter to him, he only wanted Avery.
Avery is someone who so talented, hardworking, loyal, and dedicated to her family and friends, and due to circumstances beyond her control, gave up her happiness to help others. I don’t want to give too much away because much of this book was a surprise to me and that doesn’t happen very often when I read. I really loved their journey and the reasons why they made the decisions they did are all revealed. This page-turner had me on the verge of tears many times just hoping that they can work it out.
Through the author’s words, you could feel their chemistry and connection and the very real raw emotion they were feeling. I liked the flashbacks into the past and how much detail the author provided as the story unfolded.
The only reason I am giving this book 4 starts instead of 5 is because I wish Avery was truthful with him about their past when they spent time alone at the shore. She was a young adult now, not a high school student when poor choices are more easily forgiven. I understand why she didn’t, but feel they could never really move forward and have a healthy relationship if she can’t be honest with him. She never even told him about her upbringing and all that she endured, even though he asked repeatedly if there was anything she wanted to share. I understand and liked her independence, but in a relationship, you need to be able to lean on each other and she put up walls.
The truth is revealed eventually as this is a romance novel after all, and it all works out beautifully in the end. I especially liked reading the epilogue which was a glimpse into their future! I also liked all of the supporting characters and am hoping to read more of them in future books.
Avery and Emmett were high school sweethearts until circumstances split them apart. The break up was so bad they couldn’t stand being around each other. This made things difficult since they shared the same group of friends. Now years later the pain and anguish is still between them when they run into each other at the reunion with their friends. Sparks reignite between them when they see each other again. Is this a second chance for them to right their past mistakes? Will Emmett finally get his girl?
This is a great story once I started it I couldn’t put it down. The chemistry was off the charts hot. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend it to any book lover.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
3.5 STARS for this second chance romance! This was a first time read by Maya Hughes and I am a fan! I jumped into this series rather late and it left me dying to know about the other characters in the books.
I’m a sucker for second chance romances and I’m always eager to learn about why they broke up in the first place. The conflict really had me at an impasse and had me agitated with Avery’s inability to reveal the whole truth. I can’t say I was a fan of her dropping the truth to Emmett a little bit at a time. Like, come on girlfriend!
I really loved the supporting characters and wanted to know so much more about them. I have an entire series to catch up and I will be doing so very soon!
Overall, really REALLY enjoyed the book, but couldn’t help but be a little bit irritated with some of Avery and Emmett’s actions. I wasn’t expecting to have my heart torn in two over their story, but their HEA is one you’ll be rooting for!
Maya sure knows how to weave an engaging and emotion-filled story. I’m a fan after reading this one!
**I VOLUNTARILY REVIEWED AND WAS GIVEN AN ADVANCED READER’S COPY. ALL THOUGHTS ARE MY OWN.**

3.5 Amazing Stars
This book was a fun read. The characters were great and developed nicely, the storyline kept me intrigued and the sexy times were always amazing. This is my first book by this author but def wont be my last.
A huge thank you to Ms Hughes. Oh my, my fellow romance reader’s, you will be completely enthralled with this impressive release. You have two beautiful souls that were meant to be together as well as those that do everything in their power to tear them apart. Emmett might come from wealth, but he is a man that is just as gorgeous on the inside as he is on the outside. Avery has been caring for her Sister and Father from a young age and is the kind of person that inspires people to be the best version of themselves. I wish I could properly describe how beautiful she is as a person. Avery goes without for years upon years and never once complaints. Emmett and Avery are going to take you on an incredible journey (theirs). Avery is my favorite character because of her absolute love and dedication to her Sister. There are reads and storylines that stay with us as we recommend them, you know the ones that break your heart and then mend it seamlessly together again as they rekindle what was once perfect… THAT IS THIS BOOK. I can not help but to impatiently await the next book. I truly hope it will be about Olivia and Ford.
I was beyond fortunate to have requested an advanced reader’s copy of Ruthless King in exchange for my honest/voluntarily given opinion and I highly recommend reading this book as well as anything written by Ms Hughes. She produces top quality books each and every single time. Lucky us.
I read the prequel and the first book, some how missed Heath’s story but will rectify that this weekend.
I have been chomping at the bit since reading the prequel to find out what high school lovers Avery and Emmett’s story is.
With all his fame and money Emmett can’t find happiness and love….. he had it once but she ripped his heart out and walked away.
Now 4 years later she is standing in front of him acting like she was the wronged one. Once the truth starts emerging Emmett realises that the woman he once loved wasn’t who he thought she was…
Avery will do anything to protect her sister and dead beat father even if it means giving up the only man she has loved.
Now that they have a chance at being together again the past rears its ugly head and tries to separate them again but Emmett won’t allow it to happen this time even if it means giving up his fortune and career for Avery.

What a fun book! Yes there was a bit of heartache thrown in there, isn’t that what a great book is all about… twisting you up inside and giving your emotions a ride on the tilt-a-whirl!!! This was my first Rittenhouse book, and I cannot wait to read the others. What else could you ask for, hot hockey players, best friends, a bit of tears, and a lot of fun!
After reading the prequel of Kings of Rittenhouse, I was so glad I got this ARC for Emmett and Avery. I fell in love with Emmett immediately but did think he definitely had some growing up to do. Emmett and Avery are high school sweethearts. As far as Emmett goes, he knows Avery is the one for him. Emmett is pretty much on his own as his parent do not pay him any attention and are gone most of the time. He is from a rich family and can usually pay for everyone’s entertainment. During an end of year senior party, Emmett thinks Avery betrayed him by doing something with another guy so they break up. He won’t have anything to do with Avery as he feels so hurt and is completely devastated. He even goes far away to go pro for Hockey and moves to California. There he is a player (in more ways than one) and can’t be in a relationship longer than a few months. His mind may be on other women but his heart is still broken by Avery.
Avery is trying to make ends meet as her Dad is an addict and not the most reliable. Things got really bad for her before she graduated and she ended up having to work at a bakery and take care of her younger sister so that she can finish at the prestigious high school and then go to college. So Avery puts herself on the back burner and does what she has to and takes care of her sister and her dad.
So when all the friends (there are various other couples from previous books) get together on the beach, both Emmett and Avery are invited. This causes a lot of friction and uneasy moments. But Avery is bound and determined not to leave before she at least gets some fun in. Emmett is still hurt from her betrayal yet everything isn’t quite what it seems as Avery has secrets and a different view of what happened. As Emmett slowly learns what truly happened, his heart begins to thaw. But as he sees Avery talking with another guy, Noah, old resentments come forward. So many secrets and miscommunications between these two. Plus someone is trying to keep them apart.
I was totally wrapped up in their story. I look forward to reading more from this author and hope she will put her books on sale (for us out of work federal employees without a paycheck…) as I want to read the whole King series. Definitely recommend this book!

I loved the reveal of this couple’s relationship having been intrigued by them during the previous books where tidbits of them were introduced but not explained fully. This book delves into their relationship and gives a story full of teenage love and horrific manipulation by others whom deem they shouldn’t be together. The author made the story believable by giving us likable and lovable characters, including the wonderful friends who we met in previous books. There were villains to provide drama. The author makes an emotional connection with the reader by allowing us insight to the life she has had for years which would be hard for anyone to navigate but she does so without remorse so that her family and her loved one are allowed to live their life to the fullest without regard to her own life. Wonderful writing. I didn’t want the story to end.
I have been dying to read Avery and Emmett’s second chance romance since starting Kings of Rittenhouse. Once having experienced an enviable, near perfect romance, only to have that dream shatter, ending tragically, Avery and Emmett’s relationship started to be filled with undeniable animosity. And many questions started swirling in my head, piquing my interest, about this couple’s reasons for separating.
Ruthless King was overall more enjoyable than Shameless King and Reckless King. However, I seem to have an issue with each installment. In Shameless King, Declan’s virtually non-existent relationship with his dad was pointless; in Reckless King, the forbidden relationship came too late and wasn’t worth being a point of contention.
“Avery Davis had dismantled me and left me as a shell. Even knowing the pain she’d caused, every night I closed my eyes, it was her I dreamed about.”
Complete, utter disappointment consumed me when we finally received details about the separation. I understand that sometimes a situation appears worse than it is, but unless you really saw something, or find definitive proof, having a smidge of maturity really saves a person from experiencing unnecessary heartache. Miscommunication is my least favourite reason to separate a couple for prolonged periods of time.
Avery could have been honest, saving herself being subjected to bullying by an ex-boyfriend, but instead remained quiet about everything that happened. She didn’t trust herself, nor her relationship. I experienced inconsistencies with her less than fabulous personality—one minute, she’s angry at Emmett for not believing her; the next, she admits she didn’t want to cause issues by upsetting Emmett. You can’t be annoyed at someone over a situation you’ve been secretive and dishonest about.
“I never stopped loving you. Even when I hated you with all of my being, even when I hated myself for it and wished I could carve my heart out of my chest, I still loved you.”
I started enjoying this more towards the end, because the narrative moved forward and the characters developed some. However, relationship development felt stagnant. I have some very good feelings regarding Ford and Olivia (that ending!) in Fearless King. If you love second chance sports romance, I recommend reading this series!
