My d*ck never got me in half as much trouble as my heart…We were high school sweethearts. I was head over heels for her and no one could tell me we weren’t going to last forever. College? Going pro? My family’s money? None of it mattered. She was all I needed. Then she ripped my heart out. But I’m not going to let that happen again. She’s back. Invading my life and acting like she was the … Invading my life and acting like she was the wronged one. The pain is still there, but I can’t keep my eyes off her. I can’t stop thinking about her and how much was left unsaid between us. Being this close is making me question everything I thought I knew about her.
This time everything will be on my terms. Everything…

Every time I read this author, Maya Hughes’s work, I’m simply amazed of how everything complements into the story plot-line; the drama, the angst, the passion, the chemistry, everything! I liked every little thing about this read and I’m excited for her next story 🙂
ABSOLUTELY must read !!!!
Yes ! Long waiting for this book is over ! I couldn’t be more happy today, because I’ve put my greedy hands on Ruthless King by Maya Hughes, FINALLY ! After reading it… I can assure evryone – Avery & Emmett’s story is absolutely must read! From the begining, this book get so deep under my skin… I couldn’t put this it down. Maya Hughes build amazing story line, with lot of tension, a little mistery and with right dose of drama in the background. I didn’t read this book – I devoured every word like junkie on the bookish high.
For starters Ruthless King is second chance romance, and hate to love story. Why I’m saying about hate to love ??? Because broken heart could lead everyone on love’s darker side…. where being too proud seems to be better way to survive. Avery & Emmett are high school sweethearts. They love each other, but even that … there are some hard secrets between them, that made them go in seperate ways. Em is hurt… Avery has broken heart… I was so sad knowing that they suffering. After a couple of years life make them met again. in that exactly moment they started to finding out why… who and what left them so much broken.
Avery is this kind of heroine, that I like the most. She absolutely brave, proud and love so deep… when it’s needed she could do anything for people, that she loved. After reading what she gone thru I wanted just hug her so, so much !
Emmett “from the past” is typical golden boy, he’s young, handsome and a little cheeky too. He seems to love Avery deeply, but sometimes he doesn’t understand her with everything. What adult Emmett wants ?? He want to punish Avery, but he started to realize how much he hurt her, how much he was wrong about situations from past… He still has feelings for Avery so falling again in love with this amazing girl is just a matter of time.
Highly recomend this title!
A second chance romance between Emmett and Avery. They went through a lot to finally have the happy ever after. A great read.
We first meet this couple in the sequel to this series, The Kings of Rittenhouse. Although this is the third book in the series it can be read as a standalone.
I love second chance romances, but this is a little bit more!
Avery ripped Emmet’s heart to shreds in high school, as he was entering into his professional career in Ice Hockey. Now 4 years later with his heart still in pieces, they are thrown into a situation where they are forced to spend time together.
I knew this book would be angsty, i knew emotions would flare and i knew it would have my emotions all over the place.
The chemistry and love between Emmet and Avery roared out of the pages and yet at the same time the emotional damage their past had caused them leapt right into the mix from the word go. The push and pull, the love and hate, oh how i loved their animosity combined with their lust! I really wasn’t sure at some points if i really wanted them to be a couple. The author has done an amazing job of making you feel so invested in their outcome, to the point i wanted to physicaly slap some sense into them both and lock them into a room to force them to talk it out!! I definitely love this group of friends, but Emmet just about stole my heart, his heart so crushed, yet caring and goodness poured out of him despite the despicable people in his life. Avery is such a badass, dealing with and holding together all she’s had thrown at her. So yes its a second chance romance with a whole lot more inbetween the pages!! Love, Trust, Growth and a new hope that you really can turn the lemons in life into lemonade !!
~The real Avery Davis~
Both Avery and Emmett certainly did not win the luck of the draws regarding their parents, it was what it was. Avery steps in to be the solid replacement for hers, doing absolutely everything in her power to make the best for her little sister Alyson. But now that Alyson was soon to be on her way to college on a full ride, everything, every single sacrifice and decision made to this point, was made worth it. If only Emmett Cunning could just not be hanging around to remind her of their past and the keeping of truths which could fully shatter what remaining ties they have.
So many secrets between them, a fiercely independent and golden-hearted female and the tortured man who cannot forget her. Great supportive secondary characters, too, who round out this amazing story!
Maya Hughes definitely got a hat trick with this Kings Series. Since the ending of the prequel novella Kings of Rittenhouse, I have eagerly been anticipating Emmett & Avery’s story, to see if Emmett misconstrued the situation with Avery to warrant the split of these two soulmates. Let me tell you, the wait while excruciating was well worth it and Maya Hughes did not disappoint. I consider Ruthless King, the absolute best of this series, although I wouldn’t miss any of the books in this series from the prequel Kings of Rittenhouse through what I believe was the final book in this outstanding series, Ruthless King. My biggest letdown is the fact that Ruthless King is the last book in this amazing, fantastic, stellar series – my only hope is that the author take pity on her readers and decides to surprise her readers with one or two follow-up novels with what the future holds for all the superb characters in this whole series. (Hint Maya, two more would be tremendous & more than amazing). I will not provide any spoilers because this whole series, but most notably Ruthless King, is a definite must read even though ‘must read’ is such a cliche, but in this case it totally fits! Every single character in the full series was magnificently described & detailed, and Emmett & Avery were probably two of the best of the whole series, I was undoubtedly disappointed when I finished Ruthless King and definitely can say I wanted more! Maya Hughes executed the books in this series expertly, the development of the each storyline & plot tied the series together brilliantly. With each new book of the series, the reader couldn’t help to be awe-inspired, each book was wonderfully thought out and the reader couldn’t help but be attached to the characters. Ruthless King is indisputably the best of the best but this whole series I would definitely recommend!
While I did receive an advanced copy from the author, I also purchased the book and am voluntarily leaving my voluntary opinion with my review.
The book is fantastic and a really fun read. It is an amazing heartfelt, emotionally deep, and exciting second chance romance with a grabbing well-developed plot. It is an engaging page turner and is well-written, funny, witty, and engaging. Emmett and Avery get a second chance at love and happiness and even though there are a number of obstacles to overcome. This is one story you do not want to miss out on. I recommend reading this book, you will not be sorry.

I’d been waiting for this particular book in the Kings of Rittenhouse series and I’ll tell you that Maya did not disappoint when it came to Emmett and Avery’s story.
When trust if broken can it ever be repaired? If you had a second chance with the one you loved and lost would you take it? What if you never had a second chance?
When I say Ruthless King covers all the feels, I don’t say that lightly. This is a story that covers not only a look at the intense feelings of your first love, but the anger and loss over losing it along with the road to how one goes about repairing the damage done to it. Trust is such a fragile thing, given so freely in the beginning of a relationship, but once shattered, it almost seems impossible to repair all the cracks and fissures.
“My heart was carved out of my chest, raw and agonizing and numb all at the same time…. Avery Davis had dismantled me and left me as a shell.”-Emmett
Right alongside Emmett and Avery’s relationship is another that has been destroyed on a permanent basis. A team member that no longer has a chance to fix his relationship and his girl that is left in heartbreak. Without giving away the storyline, in case you haven’t read the prior book, I love that Maya has included the follow up with Preston and Imogen in Ruthless King. The hard reality that Imogen has to deal with along with the struggling emotions that Avery is facing was an excellent reference to how the heart grieves over the losses in our lives.
“A friend, sibling, parent, girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, wife, child – those are all going to hurt in different ways, but none of us can judge which one hurts more. There’s more than enough pain to go around.”-Avery
Maya Hughes delves deep into the loss, you feel the torment, heartbreak, and anger; especially from Emmett, for all the years he’s lost in building a future with the love of his life. When things turn around, you once again feel the new-found passion that all lovers share, but you also get that sense of regret for all the time lost over what they missed out on in each other’s lives. They both have a lot of growing to do in their new relationship, they realize they can’t pick up from where they left off, they are older and basically have new lives, as much as they want to pick up the old Emmett and Avery, they both have changed, and they also haven’t changed. They have a lot to discuss about what happened in the past, but they also want to live in their bubble of happiness, you know that bubble…unfortunately the bubble always bursts, what awaits them outside the bubble is not exactly pretty, but have they grown enough to outlast the ugly this time?
If you haven’t read the prequel, The Kings of Rittenhouse, I would suggest it, mainly for the fact that you get a huge glimpse of Emmett and Avery before the breakup. You also get a small taste of the breakup scene, but just a small one, because that is what left me wondering what the heck happened to lovey-dovey-forever-and-ever-Emmett-and-Avery? Myself and the rest of the world had to wait a couple books in between then and now biting our fingernails (also if you haven’t read those either they are also excellent), but it was definitely worth it!!
Oh my I can’t begin to describe how Devine this book is! First you have to read all the books prior to this one to get depth of the love between Emmett and Avery. How it all blew up and the four years since that epic night. But now comes the moment of truth. Will they survive they truth? Can they fix the hurt? I adored this book and it is my favorite of the Kings stories thus far. Who knows Olivia’s might be my next favorite! Maya accolades to you for writing one of the best series ever!

I need to hack the system to give more stars !!
I thought I was ripped open with Shameless King but Ruthless King – Emmett and Avery’s story was so much more. I was lost in it. Finally able to get the whole story of what happened to them. How they got their second/third chance. I felt all their emotions. I hurt when they hurt. I laughed when they laughed. I cried when they cried. I smiled when they smiled. My family thinks I’m crazy
I read the Prequel & jumped right in to Shameless King but then I HAD TO skip ahead to Ruthless King. I just couldn’t wait. Now I’m going back to Heath’s story & cant wait for the next one after Ruthless King. I’m thinking it could be Ford’s but I’ll just have to try to be patient (not so good at that, to be honest ) I’m a King’s fan all the way.
I dug right in and this is a second chance worth reading.
Emmett is a player, hocking abd dating and blames his inability to commit past three months all on his high school ex, Avery. In that regard, he’s pretty immature.
He can’t get past his rage over something he misconstrued.
Avery, meanwhile has been a parent to her younger sister and all around saint. She sacrificed so much for her family and Emmett let her down when she needed him most and ghosted on her.
Can these two find their way back against insurmountable odds?

I really enjoyed Emmett and Avery’s journey of ups and downs! I was on the edge so much I had to hold on tight. The pain they have both experienced added to the story. It’s sweet, touching, emotional, spicy and I loved the mix! I’m excited to dig in to the rest of the King men!

The story we’ve all been waiting for
Avery and Emmett won me over when I read the Rittenhouse Prep prequel to the series. The ending left sooooo many questions up in the air and I was intrigued to find out what happened to bring their story to what felt like the precipice of something more…..! But Maya had to keep us glued to our seats with Heath’s story first….like dangling a carrot….and then finally being able to take that first juicy bite
Four years have passed since that dreaded moment that tore these two apart. But finally, fate has put them in each other’s paths so that they can work through all their issues and hopefully find a way to make amends and if need be, a second chance at love! I love both Avery and Em’s characters as they have both been through so much together and apart, but have grown in all ways that are necessary to survive all of life’s hardships
Looking forward to the next King
This is the third book in the series, and it can be read as a standalone. This second chance romance focuses on Avery and Emmett, who were high school sweethearts at one time. But that was four years ago, and they both have different lives. Emmett now can’t stand to be in the same room as Avery. The story unfolds slowly. Both Avery and Emmett have suffered terribly from their breakup for different reasons. When they are thrown together one summer, the emotions are volatile and intense. Trust on both sides is difficult & history appears to be repeating itself. I had to put this book down a couple of times because I could feel the anger, pain, betrayal, and frustration of the characters. I was cheering for them so hard and they got the ending they deserved. I loved seeing the other characters from past books too. Great reading.
I am voluntarily leaving my opinion of a review copy of this book.

The wait is over to finally get the story of Emmett and Avery. Every hint and speculation over the past two books were only crumbs, a teaser for the real dessert. Maya Hughes sure knows how to draw out the suspense and boy was the wait worth it. Every raw, gritty detail is brought to light in Ruthless King, the third book in the super fantastic always excellent Kings of Rittenhouse series. If you haven’t yet met these athletes and the girls who can keep them in line, you are definitely missing out.
I love how Ruthless King is so much more than the rich guy meets new poor girl and they fall in love and have a happy life. Emmett and Avery are definitely not a fairy tale and everything important was always fought and earned. These two first met sophmore year of school with Avery, the new girl, needing help and Emmett graciously stepping in. Making it clear he wasn’t going away, they started dating despite all the differences between them, including Avery’s younger sister who was literally the third wheel. No matter what their bond continued to grow and three years later they were still going strong. Until the fateful night it all came crashing down, leaving both Emmett and Avery broken hearted and extremely lost.
It’s been four years and still neither can shake the betrayal and pain but just as bad was the loss of friends. Now the group is back together for the summer before the real world comes calling, landing both Emmett and Avery in each other’s presence for the first time in too long. I really felt for both these characters, especially seeing firsthand the hate being thrown around and knowing that nothing can change or fix the past. But what started as a horrific battle of wills slowing turned into civility with the more time Emmett and Avery spent around each other, bringing forth the fact their feelings and chemistry never fizzled out and the only way to actually move on was to finally spill the truth.
So many shocking revelations are revealed and I honestly never saw any of this coming. Just when you think something good is happening, bam Maya Hughes throws another curveball and I couldn’t read fast enough to learn what would happen next. I also loved how once again the bond between everyone is showcased and no matter where each guy is living or playing hockey, they will always be brothers first. Same for new and old girlfriends, the love and respect is always there and continues to expand without question. The Kings of Rittenhouse series are fantastic to read, especially since each one comes with a new couple and a completely different story than the last. I’m already itching for the next book, especially after that epilogue and knowing Maya Hughes will hands down deliver another super hot read that I will no doubt love.
In this lovers to enimes to lovers to enimes, wait did I lose you? I hope not. Emmett and Avery are high school sweethearts until they aren’t. She makes sacrifices for the good of everyone in her life but her and he takes things at face value. Fast foward four years later and their mutual friends invite them both to spend some time at the beach. The sparks are all still there as long as the don’t kill each other. I loved this story. Emmett is an entitled rich kid who uses his money for good. His parents are less than to be desired but he turned out ok since they had no interaction with him at all. He helps out his friends as much as possible but never reminding anyone who paid for what. Avery is on her way to be able to do something for herself. She’s saved enough to finally start college even though she’s not sure its what she wants. She is in a good place. Her job however is not. A plan forms to help out the owner and become more to the business. But again outside forces make her choose a different path.
The love is strong between them. They become inseparable again. The secrets of the past though have a way to come to light. Both of their reactions will determine how they move foward. I loved Emmett and Avery. Their parents on the other hand, not so much. Well written to where I was laughing, I was angry at the parents and I was crying. Emotions are plenty in this. I cannot wait for the next one. I just can’t get enough of these Kings!
By far my most anticipated Kings of Rittenhouse story. Emmett and Avery are my most beloved couple of the Kings and their story has brought me the most fulfillment and satisfaction to read. Emmett and Avery shared first love in high school but circumstances and greed and pride ripped their lives and love apart causing them to live only half a life without each other. It is now four years later and fate and friends have brought these two back together. Will forgiveness be found and the truth be revealed? Once you read this you will love this couple as well.

I am totally invested in this series of hockey players. I look forward to each story.
Emmett and Avery’s story has been teased from the very beginning and anxiously I have been waiting for it. It didn’t take long for this book to give me all kinds of feels.
By Chapter 3 or 4, the picture of Emmett and Avery started to become clearer and it’s not what I expected! I have so much respect for Avery and all that she has gone through.
So, they have avoided each other like the plague for the past 4 years and it worked up until the point that the big group of friends want to reunite and spend the summer together. When Emmett and Avery find out that they are stuck there together, the sparks start to fly. This book gives you glimpses of the past along with the present. AND there is a huge teaser to an upcoming story that will leave you speechless!
I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an ARC copy of this book.
I have been anxiously waiting for Emmet and Avery’s story, and here it was in my hands…I was shaking I was so excited.
Ruthless King (Kings of Rittenhouse, book #3) was everything I was hoping for and more. Ruthless King is the story of Emmet and Avery. You really get introduced to their characters in the prequel called Kings of Rittenhouse, a Shameless King prequel. The prequel is also where you learn about the beginning and ending of Emmet and Avery’s relationship. Emmet and Avery are high school sweethearts, having been together for three years. On a night that Emmet planned to be a very special night, instead backfired and left Emmet with his heart ripped out. In Shameless King and Reckless King you will get snippets of the absolute hatred that Emmet has towards Avery, and then Ruthless King starts out four years later.
It’s going to be hard to review this, as I do not want to spoil it for others. Emmet, what can I say about Emmet? Well, I was in love with Declan in Shameless King, and loved Heath in Reckless King, but Declan was still my favorite. Well, move over boys because Emmet is my new favorite. I loved Emmet’s character. He was a very sexy hockey player. He loved with everything he had, and if you were on his hatred radar, yicks, because he hated with everything he had. Avery, all I can say about Avery is she broke my heart, but so strong and beautiful. The problem is Emmet and Avery have the same friends, but she did try to stay away from him because of the daggers Emmet shot Avery’s way every time he saw her. There is a get together at a beach house, and when Emmet cannot make it, they invite Avery. Well, Emmet changes his mind and when he sees Avery there he wants her to leave, but no one else does, so she stays. Okay that is really all I can say without ruining it for everyone. There are discussions, misunderstandings, anger, broken hearts (again), and lots of hot, hot, hot sex scenes, and let’s not forget the world’s worst parents. So many times I was yelling at Avery…tell him, Tell Him, TELL HIM!!!! Towards the end I was crying again. This was the story I was waiting for and it was EPIC!! My questions were finally answered. You truly must read this series, and when you get to Ruthless King you will see that you experience every emotion there is. You really should plan on reading this in one sitting. I was not planning on reading it all at once, but there was no way I was putting this book down. Also, have tissues ready because Avery will just break you apart. Thank you Maya Hughes for my new go to book. You are given a teaser of what is to come by Maya Hughes at the end of the book, and now I cannot wait for Ford’s story.
