Run to Ground is book one in the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series by Katie Ruggle.
This is my first taste at Ms. Ruggle and I enjoyed. This novel is a nice start to the series and a good introduction to the characters.
Jules Jackson has run out of time and needs to get her younger siblings out of the cruel clutches of relatives. With a little help from an unexpected source she and the kids go on the run and end up in the town of Monroe. It’s a quaint town hiding away in the Rocky Mountains, but it might not be the best hiding spot, even with new identities.
I liked the determination that Jules has. Her siblings are in a bad situation and legal means won’t work. She’s tried and failed. She is at the end and needs to help them… It was hard, scary, and overwhelming, but she got them away. The children each have issues; because of what has happened to them, but they stick with their sister and help her to get themselves out. I really enjoyed the children and when I found out what happened to them, I cried.
Theo Bosco… Love that name. He’s reeling from the loss of his human partner’s suicide and his previous canine partners death to cancer. He ends up with his former partner’s canine officer, but neither human nor animal are in a good places. They just aren’t working together nor are they healing. Can these two, who are so damaged, bond?
Theo and his partner find help in a new resident to the town. Theo knows she’s hiding something, but he can’t let it go nor can he stay away. I liked how the Jackson family helped both Theo and his canine find peace and camaraderie.
Theo and Jules fight their attraction. He’s got no time for a woman and she’s got secrets that could hurt her siblings if they are found. What I really enjoyed was seeing the grieving dog, Viggy, with the kids and how the kids and Viggy needed each other. Animals have a way of helping us heal.
It’s not all fun and romance. Their is a fear of discovery and a forbidding evil just waiting to strike. The suspense builds and it came as a total surprise to find out who was behind all the mayhem.
The secondary characters where also fun. I love Theo’s police buddies. They each added something to the story.
Narration: Callie Beaulie did a a wonderful job narrating this story. At times it was hard to listen. We learn about the kids and it’s implied that one was sexually abused. Then their is Viggy, our damaged dog. Just hearing how traumatized he is, well I felt for him and the kids. As for the voices – their are a lot of different characters to portray from man to woman to kids. She did a great job switching from adult to kid or man to woman. She also added a slit southern accent to Jules and it was done nicely.
Run to Ground was a nice start to the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series. I enjoyed the narration and plan to continue the series in audio.
Rated: 3.5 Stars
To young adult.
To repetitive.
Heroine way to whinny.
Drove me nuts.

The writing is good and the storyline engaging BUT i can only assume that its been edited to death. Far too many key facts and background are left out to fully enjoy. The worst part is we get glimpses into them in the “extras” provided at the end of the book.
Run to Ground is the first in the new Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series by Katie Ruggle. This book is the same formula as other series books by Ruggle with of course great looking policemen, rescue squad members and/or firemen and the damsel in distress who is really a strong independent woman. Should you like this formula than this is the book for you which also includes a wonderful Belgian Malinois. Officer Theo Bosco is assigned his deceased partner’s K9 dog, Viggy because Bosco has not replaced his own K9 that died from cancer. Both Bosco and the Viggy are struggling with the deaths of those they felt deeply about and then Jules enters the picture as the new waitress in this small Colorado town. Jules is running away from her past along with her siblings she has kidnapped and taken with her. The story is predictable but I enjoyed every page of the story and finished it in one day. Action and a surprise are a good addition to the storyline of Theo and Jules. The end gives a good entrance to the next book in the series.
I finished it, but only because I wanted to find out about the siblings… What happened with that storyline? Truly, this was one of the most ridiculous stories I’ve ever read.
I won’t spoil it for readers who want to read it, but the guilty person is ridiculous. The mystery was so contrived I was literally rolling my eyes. And the romance, stupid. Again, I don’t want to give a spoiler, so I’ll start at the beginning. The supposed “hero” berates the new waitress in town, and then all of a sudden, they’re an item. Made zero sense! The one sex scene, horrible. Not romantic. Not even comfortable. No thank you!
More contrived items, which happened all in the beginning, so it’s not a spoiler. The heroine, the older sister, is able to get fake identities for the siblings she kidnapped because she just so happens to know someone in the mob. And then, she’s able to rent a huge house and take care of her siblings on a waitress’s salary. And how in the HECK did she enroll them in school without school transcripts? And truly, we never receive a REAL reason why she kidnapped her siblings. Why isn’t there a nationwide manhunt for these three young children?
Sorry, Ms. Ruggle, you really need to come up with a better premise. I have no desire to go onto the next book or any of your books.
And I’m disturbed with Charlaine Harris, whose books I enjoy (the only reason I even bought this book), for saying “Vivid and charming.” Did you really read this, Charlaine?
Another wonderful novel by Katie Ruggle. Perfect action-packed read with twists and romance.
Great book by Katie Ruggle! I read all the books in her Search & Rescue series and it was one of my favorite series ever, so I couldn’t wait to start the K9 books. Lots of character building in this one, but Theo is heart warming from the start. Jules is a great character too. The author takes a long time to get her story up and running and all the kids names took a while to remember. Once the reader is into the story though, it becomes a page turner and the suspense and romance both build up. Even the dog comes around. It’s a HEA, but I could have used a bit more at the end. I’m guessing we will see more of Theo and Jules in the coming books. I can’t wait! A++. Katie Ruggle does it again!
Katie is at the top of my reading list
I love character driven stories. And this one has a bomb sniffing K9 officer. I couldn’t wait to dive in.
First, there’s Jules Jackson. She rescued her younger siblings from cruel relatives and is on the run. Help from an unexpected source lands her and the kids in the picturesque town of Monroe in the Rocky Mountains. But maybe hiding in a small town, even with new identities, isn’t the best idea. Those pursuing her won’t stop searching.
Next up is Theo Bosco. I love that name. He’s reeling from the loss of his canine partner to cancer and his human partner to suicide.. The officer leaves behind a four legged officer that needs help adjusting. Can these two damaged beings bond and overcome their losses?
I had such fun with Jules and her siblings. She’s taken on a lot and the kids are a handful. As they settle into their rundown new home there’s some fun incidents. Like when the stove caught fire and almost burned down the house. I don’t know how she does it. Juggling a new life with a bunch of young kids, worrying about being found and holding down a waitress job. You’ve gt to admire her determination and love for her family.
Theo is taciturn and withdrawn. He doesn’t want a new canine partner and the dog doesn’t want anything to do with him or police work. He just happens to be in the neighborhood and spies the smoke pouring out of Jules’ house and rushes to help. Turns out a rat had built a nest in the old stove. More smoke than fire. At least as far as the stove goes.
Jules is fighting a growing attraction to Theo and Theo has no time for a woman. But the grieving dog, Viggy, and the kids are instant friends and that leads to more encounters and romance keeps growing. I liked the dilemma here. Jules is hiding and she’s falling for a police officer, someone she should be avoiding like the plague.
It was hard to listen to parts of this story about Viggy. The dog was so traumatized and I felt so bad for him. I couldn’t help but hope that Viggy and Theo would form a bond and help each other.
With the fear of discovery and a sinister evil waiting to strike, its not all fun and romance. The suspense builds as a school shooting occurs and its heart pounding action right up to the end. It came as a total surprise to find out who was behind all of the mayhem.
I had been wanting to try this series. Seen it around. And I thought I might enjoy it. I loved it. I’m hooked. And I am now starting On The Chase, the second in book in this fabulous series.
I am seriously going to have to read every book author Nicole Edwards recommends. She’s two for two so far. Ms. Edwards often tells her fans what she’s reading in her e-mail newsletter and I finally decided to check out one of the books she was reading. I read the first book in the Blood Brothers series by Rebecca Zanetti, Deadly Silence, and got hooked on that series and more by that author. A couple of months ago, Ms. Edwards was reading Through the Fire, the fourth book in this Katie Ruggle series. Well, this is a new-to-me author so I decided to give this first book of the series a try. Amazing! Once again, Nicole Edwards has impeccable taste.
All of the alpha-male cops in this story are guys I want to get to know more. Theo is the main focus of this story, but his pals Otto and Hugh have me itching to know more. There is such a wonderful and deep connection with them all, even if they try to play it off as giving each other crap more than giving each other love…we know the truth. These guys love each other and would do anything for one another.
Theo is more of a strong silent type than the others, but that understandable. Not only did he lose his own K9 partner to cancer less than a year ago, but he also lost his human partner recently. He’s not the only one reeling from the loss. His deceased partner’s K9, Viggy, is just not the same since the loss. Not only does Theo have the guilt of his partner’s death on him, he also feels like a failure when it comes to Viggy. When Jules moves to town, he can’t help but be suspicious of the woman who constantly seems to be ready to jump out of her skin. But he also can’t help but want to learn more about her for personal reasons. She’s a ray of sunshine for him and seems to be the only person able to start pulling him out of his funk.
Jules will do anything to protect her 4 underage siblings, so hooking up with a cop is not on her agenda. Yet, like Theo, she cannot resist their pull. As unsettled as they make each other in some ways, they calm each other in another way. Jules craves the safety she feels when Theo is around and Theo craves the peace Jules gives his soul. And, although Viggy isn’t himself most of the time, the dog loves Jules and her siblings. It’s the only time he acts like his old self.
The relationships Theo forms with Jules and the kids is very touching. There is so much going on around them it’s hard for the reader to know for sure who is good and who is bad and what the actual threat is, and is it aimed at Jules? Who knows! It’s a wild ride. (I feel I should point out that there are a couple of dicey gun situations in this book, including one that takes place around a school. I don’t want to give spoilers, but I want to make sure you know going in this book can be intense for some people.)
There are one or two slight timeline issues, but nothing major. And the cover is atrocious. Seriously, ignore the cover. Nobody stands in that awkward way in real life. Don’t let that stop you for reading this one. And the next one, I’m sure. Because while the overall story of Theo, Jules, and the kids is wrapped up to a certain extent, this story isn’t quite over. There are still many unresolved issues, and the story ends with more of a HFN than a HEA. It’s not what I would necessarily consider a cliffhanger, but there is still more to be told. The author was genius in keeping me hooked to the end and leaving me wanting more.

I totally love all the books in the series. I would highly recommend them.
Entertaining story but the ending was odd with unaswered questions.
Enjoyed the characters including the poor dog, he needs retiring I think.
Fun plot with some suspense thrown in, nothing too dark as you know the good guys will win.
As usual I’ve read the series out of order but it doesn’t actually matter too much as although they flow into each other there is enough “backhistory” for me to get my head round where I am in the arc.
This is set not far from the setting of the Search & Rescue series.
Theodore Bosco lost his partner and is still reeling from the guilt and anger that he feels towards his partner. But he has now been partnered with his partner’s K( and they are not bonding well. Viggie is feeling the loss of his human and is obviously picking up on the clashing feelings from Theo.
Jules is good sister even though she stepped outside the law to rescue her siblings from her step-mother. Now on the run they disappeared into a small town on the other side of the country. She is trying to keep a roof over their heads whilst also allowing them to have some semblance of a normal life, even though they are hiding out. The kids themselves are all fully formed little personalities, all with the unending love for their older sister who could have abandoned them but rescued them instead.
Viggie, Theo’s new K9 partner, is a scene stealer too. You can just taste the loss, confusion and anger the poor thing must feel. Sam is my favourite of Jules siblings.
Run to Ground is another fabulous book in another fabulous series by Katie Ruggle. I binge-read the entire series before sitting down to write each review. We actually met Theo at the end of In Safe Hands (book 4 in the Search and Resue series). I was really hoping that he was going to be the hero in her new Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series. I was not disappointed.
The emotional content in this book is rich and plentiful. Theo has just lost not only his cop partner but also his K9 partner. He is grieving hard for both. When his partner dies, Theo takes Don’s K9 partner as his own, and it’s an epic disaster. Viggy mopes and doesn’t fulfill his K9 duties the way he should, Theo is distraught, and both of them are depressed. When a stranger and her family move into town, both Theo and Viggy perk right up.
Jules and her family are on the run. Constantly fearful of being discovered and having her family ripped apart, Jules tries to keep a low profile. When she comes face-to-face with a trio of cops and is attracted to one of them, Jules doesn’t know if she should stay or flee. Falling for a cop is the absolute worst thing that can happen but fall she does.
Amid the chaos of Theo’s loss of his partner and subsequent gain of his partner’s dog, and Jules trying to keep it together for her family, danger is lurking around the corner. The target could be one of many; Jules and the kids, Theo, the police department, or the entire town. The stress and suspense of this book increases into a mind-blowing conclusion that I never saw coming.
Many people seemed disappointed in the ending of book 1 and instead of getting through the series, knocked Run to Ground, well, to the ground. Patience is a virtue, just sayin’. Yes, this book has a loosely resolved ending for the hero and heroine and ends in a bit of a cliffhanger. There are wild threads all over the place. None of these issues make this any less of a good book. Of course, I didn’t read it when it was first released. I started it right before book 4 came out so I was able to smoothly move from book to book without having the customary wait time. Please be open minded when you start this series. Each book plays off the others so make sure to read them in order.
I enjoyed the content, the pacing, characters, and world building. There is character development but keep in mind that Jules is harboring a huge secret and to let anything slip, especially to a cop, could be disastrous. The dynamics between the three cops in the series are wonderful. They truly are brothers in all ways that matter whether they are sporting the uniform or not. Jules is very protective of her siblings and moving them to a small town is nerve wracking for her. She does her best to not be overprotective. I was able to feel the emotions of the characters and visualize the story as I read along.
Run To Ground by Katie Ruggle is a phenomenal romantic suspense. Ms. Ruggle has delivered a well-written book. The characters are absolutely stellar, I love them. Jules kidnaps her siblings away from their father that has Alzheimers and their abusive mother. Theo is a cop who is struggling with his partner’s suicide. Jules and Theo’s story is loaded with drama, humor, sizzle, suspense, and action. Did I mention fantastic characters? I loved every page of this book and look forward to reading more from Katie Ruggle in the future. Run To Ground is book 1 of the Rocky Mountain K9 Unit Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
Very enjoyable and like that there are multiple books with the same characters. Look forward to each new story.
Good story. Surprises in the characters and storyline, but it also brought about some of what I hoped for.
I am fascinated with K9’s and their human partners. While this one starts out with both the human and dog characters in a downward spiral due to the death of their friend and partner, the story is totally believable.
An older sister kidnaps her younger two brothers and sister to get them away from their “evil” step-mother. She tried to go the legal way but lost to the wealthy woman and the father is incapacitated.
She is hiding in a small town and who does she end of getting attached to? A cop! Now what? Read and find out, you’ll love it. I listened to the audio. Now I just got book two. Enjoy. Lots of good look at the K9 job and interaction.
Light reading good.
She was still keeping the big secret at the end and it frustrated me so much I am not going to continue the series..i gave it three stars cause I really enjoyed the storyline.
