If you enjoyed the Tom Gray series then you’ll get a jolt out of this spin-off.
My heart was in my throat from start to finish on this novel.. it’s very high intensity, but people will read all night to find out what happens next. It has CIA operatives, foreign agents, super rich bad guys and a great conspiracy plot.. I’m not sure I could read McDermott really often, but he certainly did keep my attention.. it’s a remarkable plot, and in places almost too real to contemplate. Thriller fans are going to love this one.
A novel by Alan McDermott
Eva Driscoll is an assassin. Ostensibly she works for the CIA, but the reality is that she works for the Executive Security Office. This group of men hereafter referred to as ESO, run a globe-spanning conglomerate that owns just about every bank on earth. All are trillionaires several times over. With all that wealth comes control. Virtually every governmental organization in the United States including the Supreme Court is under their sway. If any newspaper or media outlet publishes a story that they don’t like, the journalist responsible is likely to have a fatal “accident.”
Simply put, they can dispose of anyone, just as they disposed of Eva’s brother Jeff. Now she is determined that this group of oligarchs is not going to get away with it. She knows many tricks of fighting, killing, surveillance, escape and evasion, but does she know enough? Can Eva save the last member of Jeff’s Special Forces team and thereby figure out why her brother was killed? Can she get revenge? Or will she be just another victim of the ESO?
“Run and Hide” is the first book in a series that will turn some authors green with envy. It has it all; Great characters, fast action and a storyline that will challenge your thinking about where our world-spanning government surveillance apparatus is taking us. Highly recommended for aficionados of the genre.
My thanks to Thomas & Mercer, Seattle, and NetGalley for providing the ARC on which this review was based.
Run and Hide by Alan McDermott is a new Eva Driscoll series which I am so excited to share with readers! I enjoyed this book and the interwoven plot between the secret cover-ups among government entities and the power hungry elite. In every society worldwide it is always the rich and powerful who control the people. Eva knows her brother’s suicide was murder. She begins to investigate the deaths of other members of his unit while he was in Afghanistan protecting a secret field of opiate producing poppies for the government. The unit was told this field of opiates would be used for medicinal purposes for wounded soldiers. What a lie!
A very good non-stop action thriller! There is a shoot-out and high-speed chase which is ….well WOW! Read the book!
Publication date: August 22, 2018
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
What an intense and interesting story! I had never read Alan McDermott before but I’m sure it will not be the last time I read one of his books! Thanks Alan!
Mystery, intrigue, romance, action, this book has it all! And, it is brilliantly woven into a a story which could arouse some thought on the current state of our nation.
The author weaves an amazingly told story which intrigues your thought process. Fact or fiction??? The descriptive processes paint a movie screen within the text of this book. The character development is top notch! the author provides you the ability to not only see, but feel what the characters are experiencing.. I am looking forward to reading the next installment.
I received a complementary ARC copy of this book in return for a true and honest review.
Very well written book. Knew his facts. Reading number 2 now.
Brilliant…The pace is relentless…
Great book. Couldn’t put it down
This is a great book; however, the ending ruins an otherwise excellent story.
Deep State
I grew up in a Leave It To Beaver/Father Knows Best kind of world where Bonanza and Little House on the Prairie were as complicated as life got. Then came the ’60s with Vietnam and JFK and MLK and life got “real.” Now, nearly a quarter into the 21st century, nothing is as it seems and conspiracy, paranoia, and Deep State are the new realities. Big Brother knows all and sees all. And it doesn’t get much deeper than this thriller as layers of government are peeled back and we learn what “they” don’t want you to know. So suspend your disbelief or wallow in the nightmare of paranoia or eye-opening fact as you hang on for a bumpy and exciting ride!
First time in reading this author with this being one that snagged me right away. The team this author gives you in this -Eva and Rees takes you on a rapidly engaging dilemma that keeps you engaged. You soon feel frantic and excited as you go with the story. This is also brought across clear and concise so there is not any confusion which is great. This is one great suspense that keeps you going building at the the right times.
This is my first book by Alan McDermott, and I loved it. It grabbed my attention from the very beginning. The plot, even though a little more for conspiracy theory readers, was well thought out and flowed smoothly. Characters were well written. I am looking forward to more from McDermott. I am voluntarily reviewing an advance copy I received.
Run and Hide by Alan McDermott is a fast paced, easy to read story. Characters are believable and you come to know them, I really enjoyed this book, Eva is a kickass assassin who has been marked as dispensable and rogue, conspiracy theories, more assassins and lots of action are in store for you as she helps Rees Colback (a former soldier that served with Eva’s brother), as they try to unravel who killed Eva’s brother and is now after Colback and Eva. Thank you Netgalley and the Publishers for allowing me to read this ARC book in turn for giving my honest opinion. I found this book to be unputdownable and I do recommend reading this!
An action-packed, fast-paced story that was well worth the time spent reading. I enjoyed everything about this book.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. My thoughts and opinions are my own and without bias.
3.5 Stars

If you like conspiracy theory books then you’ll thoroughly enjoy this. It was a well written fast paced book that concentrated on action to the detriment of character development. I liked Eva but felt as though I didn’t get to know her the same for Rees. There are twists & turns throughout the book, I also found I had to suspend belief at times but it’s fiction so I could live with that. I enjoyed the book & from the ending suspect that there will be more books to follow
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Compelling. Political-Action thriller. All apply, Eva has earned her status as an agent of the US government to deal with people and situations that can’t be handled through standard methods. Right, she’s an assassin and a good one. The Powers That Be made a huge mistake when they killed her brother and went on to the men on his military team. She is one of the few people clever, brave, and deadly enough to get those answers.
Even she can’t do it alone. She recruits a too small team of exceptional men and the mission begins. This time she isn’t taking orders. She’s giving them.
If you like strong, capable women, you won’t find one better. She finds answers she doesn’t want, however, that isn’t stopping her. A page-turner with plenty of action. A strong recommendation from me.
Arc provided by NetGalley, however, the review is freely given and completely my own.
And what the thriller it was. Eva was a great main character and those that came alongside were pretty good too. Eva was a really lethal weapon trained by the CIA but all the gloves are off when she finds out how she has been used. The tension of the story was one that just kept up the pace. It also had some good world building when it came to the people behind everything. Their network was truly scary.
There is action, action, action in this story. There is also a scene that is not for the squeamish, definitely an adult story because of that one thing alone. Although I’m happy to say that it’s not as detailed when it comes to the violence as it could have been. I do want to say that I usually like the thrillers that I am reading to have a romance in it. This one didn’t but it was still a darn good story.
It had a really good twist or two to the story with openings left for future adventures it seems.
I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book via Netgalley and this is what I think about it.
