Rule #1: Don’t fall in love.As a single dad, my life revolves around my daughter. No complaints…until my ex-wife forces my hand over custody.I needed a cover story. In steps Katharine Morello. My best friend’s sister is ready and willing to be my fake fiancée.Overnight we’re engaged. A temporary arrangement. No sex.No strings attached. No complications.Easy, right? Not quite. The last few months, … complications.
Easy, right?
Not quite. The last few months, I’ve been doing dirty things to her in my imagination. But that’s all they’ll ever be. Fantasies.
Rule #2: Don’t give in to temptation.
Neither of us is looking for a relationship. Been there. Done that. Even drank the Kool-Aid.
So, you see, I can resist beautiful, sexy Katharine. It doesn’t matter she’s hot as f*ck with an amazing personality to boot. All I have to do is NOT touch her.
I’ve got this.
Spoiler Alert…One night make-believe merges with reality. Sparks fly—and burn.
Now I want her. All of her.
Rule #3: See rule #1—don’t fall in love.
Man. Hindsight’s a bitch.

It has been a while since I read a Mika Jolie novel and I forgot how much I enjoyed them. This was a page turner from the start. It centres around the intriguing story of Lucas (the aforementioned single dad) and his best friend Kate. Both burned by previous relationships, they deny their mutual attraction and stay just friends.
When Lucas’ ex-wife tries to gain custody of their daughter, Kate offers her help in an unexpected way. Being a fake fiancé is one thing but what happens when the attraction threatens to take over..?
The attraction between the two main characters leapt off the page. Before they were even together, their innermost thoughts were displayed for the reader and we knew they should be a couple, even if they didn’t! This was a thrilling modern romance set in New York which I loved. The characters were well drawn and believable, the love scenes intimate but not over the top. I was racing through it but didn’t want it to be over. 4.5
If Mika Jolie isn’t on your must read list, drop everything you are doing and add her. Now.
I feel like Jolie is one of my confidants and best friends and as I read her books I feel as though we are laughing and talking over a cup of coffee or glass of wine and she is sharing her latest work of awesome (because that is what it is).
Rules of Engagement continues her trend of establishing flawed, relatable, “want to hate them for their perfection and love them because they are flawed and stupid/blind to love like the rest of us” characters and provides another heart wrenching yet beautiful emotional rollercoaster that you will gladly ride to its final stop. I. Loved. This. Book.
Great story. I thought it was going to be the classic not falls in love with best friends sister sorry but it was so much more than that. You could tell that Lucas always seemed to have a soft spot for Katherine and they were always close. So when his crazy ex wife puts him in a tough spot he naturally goes to Katherine for help. They sure didn’t know what they were getting into! But I think it all turned out for the best! You’ll have to read and tell me if you think so too.
Single Dad – Check
Best Friend’s Little Sister – Check
Fake Engagement – Check
All the things that make a recipe for a great story. And Mika is so on point with this book, I couldn’t put it down. I loved Lucas and Kate. They were fun, adorable and super hot together. What’s more taboo that secretly falling and then sleeping with your best friend’s little sister? Lucas as been burned by love and so has Kate. And that makes for some super steamy scenes and revelations on Lucas’ part when he figures out that the relationship with Kate is so much more than pretending.
Loved the single dad aspect of the book too. Nothing is hotter than a daddy who will do anything for his child. Sign…
Love this series (with each book being a standalone). If you haven’t picked up a book from Mika Jolie, you will really must. I adore her and her stories.
Rules of Engagement by Mika Jolie is the third book in the Platonically Complicated series. This book can be read as a stand-alone.
If, like me, you love books about single dads then this is certainly a book for you! The description told me it was going to be good but I was hooked on this book, and these characters as soon as I started reading. I loved the main characters and I loved how obviously compatible they were. You could feel the chemistry between them.
This is always an author o have enjoyed reading but this book by far had to be my favourite. I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this book.
This is the third book in this series, it is my favorite yet. I was pulled right into the story from the beginning. This is a friends to lovers story that I had a hard time putting down until the end. Lucas a single dad fighting for custody of his daughter. Kate is best friend’s little sister. One never wants to love again and the other is unsure about a relationship. Great chemistry and growth. You don’t want to miss their journey, worth picking up. I highly recommend this book.
RULES OF ENGAGEMENT

This is my first Mike Jolie Book. I am a newbie but am I ever glad that I decided to take the plunge and dive right in, especially to this book.
Katherine Grace Morello and Lucas Manuel Bernal are good friends with hidden attraction for each other. When custody issues arise for Lucas, Kate steps in to help him keep his daughter.
“She’s whiskey in a tea cup.”
This is a friends to lovers, single-dad story.
Kate is a day of sunshine. She suffered heartbreak but never let that hold her back from being happy. Always the optimist. Lucas is loyal and keeps his heart under lock and key.
“We’re worth the risk a million times over because I’m crazy about you…”
You can’t help but love both Kate and Lucas. They are perfect for each other. I especially loved that this book was told in Lucas’ POV. I loved all their banter, the sexual tension and over all their chemistry was so sweet. I highly recommend this book!
Rules of Engagement seems to be a set of rules to follow when you have a fake engagement to help your best friend. Lucas has custody of his 6 year old daughter. His ex-wife is getting married and wants to relocate to France – – – with their daughter. In an order to keep her, Lucas’s best friend’s little sister offers to step in and help. By accepting a fake proposal. Piece of cake right? Maybe . . . . This was a quick and easy read with a cute story. You won’t be disappointed!
What a read that will have you looking at friendship that can turn to love. The book will have you hooked from the first sweet word tell the very ending. This book has grabbed my heart and had it melting through out this book. This is a single dad wanting to love his daughter and his first love that is holding out on his feelings.
I received an ARC of this book and I am voluntarily leaving a review. This is my first book by Mika Jolie. This was a quick read. A good single dad and friends to lover story. I loved Kate and Lucas. They were so perfect together. Lucas was going through some issues with his ex regarding their daughter and Kate stepped in to help as a friend. It was nice to see their relationship grow from being friends to being much more. I really enjoyed this story.
This is the first book I read by Mika Jolie and it won’t be my last. I love the friends to lovers trope and add in a single father. Its perfect.
When Lucas’s friends bring up that he should have a fake fiancé in order to keep custody of his daughter from his ex-wife he isn’t a fan of the idea, but he didn’t get much of a choice. Though, what happens when you truly have feelings for your fake fiancé who also happens to be your friend and your best friends sister?
I enjoyed every single minute of this story, it is told primarily through Lucas’s point of view, but throughout the story you do get Kate’s views from her blog posts. Lucas is super sweet, his love for his daughter is strong. Kate is sweet, she cares about her friends and her family. She would do anything for them.
This story was sweet, a little bit of drama when it comes to the ex-wife, it was sexy and overall a great friends to lovers romance.
This is Book 3 of the Platonically Complicated Series by this author and can be read as a standalone. It is a heartfelt romance between single dad Lucas and his best friend’s sister, Kate. Whats starts out as a fake engagement turns into something more. Their sizzling chemistry and strong connection are undeniable as they navigate the bumpy road to their forever after. These two likeable characters and the unconventional plot make for an enjoyable read. Quite well written and sexy, it is a unique love story with drama, humor, passion, and love, plus engaging secondary characters to keep the reader interested. It is a solid read with heart, heat and a happy ending.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I absolutely loved this book!
Lucas & Kate have known each other for over two decades. She’s the sister of one of his best friends and off limits!! That is until one his friends suggest he and Kate start a fake relationship so he can keep custody of his daughter.
Without realizing it Kate comes to his rescue, and their fake relationship begins.
Within the time they spend together they both come to the conclusion that they have feelings for each other. But both are afraid to admit them to one another.
You have to read the book to find out what happens.
I received an arc of this book for an honest opinion.
This was such a sweet and fast friends to lovers on the train of a fake marriage and if that is not complicated enough for you she decided to add a best friend sister plot line. I loved how sweet Kate was it just jumped onto the pages and made you want to stick around to make sure nothing happened to her HEA.
Pretty good! The characters were great and the story was good! I really enjoyed it! Very steamy and sexy! The hero is hot and the heroine spunky! I would definitely check this out.
Rules of Engagement features the story of Lucas and Kate, two best friends who have been helping each other for a while. Their friendship has been completely platonic, especially because Kate is the younger sister of Lucas’s best friend, but… a little dirty thought has crossed Lucas’ mind from time to time when it comes to Kate. He’s been good controlling himself with Kate but then she went on best friend full mode and decided to save the day by pretending to be his fiance to help him with the custody of his little girl.
This was a great story to read, sexy, romantic, with great characters and a beautiful HEA. I loved Lucas from the beginning. He’s my kind of book boyfriend. His protectiveness toward Kate was awesome and once they broke all the “rules”, and they weren’t pretending anymore, everything was amazing.
Rules of Engagement is my first read of Mika Jolie. I loved the writing style, the male POV was greatly done and I connected with the story and characters right from the beginning.
If you enjoy friends-to-lovers, fake-relationship, single-dad, and best-friends-sister kinda tropes, I’m sure you’ll love Rules of Engagement. 100% recommended.
In attempt to keep custody of his daughter Lucas agrees to Kate’s suggestion of a fake engagement until after the court date. He has known Kate for years. She is his best friend’s sister.
Lucas’s ex is a headcase. I giggled every time Kate had dialogue with her. Kate is my kind of woman.
I love that fact the #1 priority in Lucas’s life is priority. You also get the story from his point of view with his thoughts and feelings on relationships past and present. The quote that he said that has stuck with me ‘Nothing sexier than confidence’.
I loved the blog that Kate wrote that she put her own personal thoughts and feelings out for others to read. Lucas read then and knew her well enough to know she was talking about him.
This was an absolutely wonderful read for me. Good friends who unbeknownst feelings for each other (because you don’t act on feelings of your best friend’s sister) whose fake engagement starts turning to something so much more.
This book is a fake engagement single Dad romance. I liked the fact that this book is told from the male point of view. You do get some insite to what Kate is thinking by the blogs that she posts. Lucas’s ex-wife is taking him to court for sole custody of his daughter. She is going to use his lack of a relationship and his constant revolving door of dating different women. Kate steps in to act as his fiancé. She has known Lucas since they were kids and her brother’s best friend. Lucas isn’t into relationships so this should be easy for him to keep to the rules. Rules are never easy to keep especially with the friction and sexual tension between the two. I received an Arc copy and am volunteering to leave a review
Kate and Lucas are amazing. Lucas is not looking for a relationship after his marriage imploded and he’s left feeling guilty for causing pain. Kate is ready for love with the right person. What happens when circumstances have them faking an engagement where the feelings aren’t fake?
I can’t wait to see where this author goes from here!
Kate and Lucas are a great example of friends to lovers. Lucas needs help to win his custody case and Kate steps in. This is a classic single dad romance that happens to be both sweet and sexy. Kate and Lucas are hottttt!!!! I really enjoy Mika’s writing style!
