I guess you have to like soap operas to enjoy this series. Lots of murders and, for me, not satisfying sleuthing to find out ‘who did it’. I was also disappointed in one of the main characters, Maggie. I forced my self to finish this set. But, if you like a good soap opera you probably will enjoy this series.
I wanted to like this series, but felt that a if a soap opera had an ugly love child with a mystery, this was it–too many characters, poor charaacter and plot deveopment, too many red herrings intended to be used in a subsequent book… Disappointing waste of time.
I read all three of these books, and ended up with such mixed feelings that I could only rate the set a 3. The books were well-written, with good character-building and descriptions that engaged the senses. The plot, however, ran like a soap opera. Relationships began to develop with hopeful tones, but inevitably they crashed. Murderers and similar deviants popped up repeatedly in what was a very small town. It quickly grew tiresome. At least each book concluded without a cliffhanger, just leaving a few dangling threads to continue pulling in the next book. Frankly, I was amazed that there are 10 books in this depressing series.
Easy read for the beach!
The series is a bit long and tedious to slog through. There was lots of superfluous detail that did not provide clues to help solve the mystery. It felt like the additional information was filler rather than substantial. The characters are rather like fake friends, initially you form an emotional bond only to find that they are irrevocably flawed and unlikeable. The main character, Maggie, needs serious therapy and perhaps psych meds. The victims of the murders are so irredeemable that their loss does not hamper society. The character of Scott is a doormat who is vapid and shallow. I got the first three books free and would not bother purchasing the next three.
Pretty good read. Easy to read, a few twists and turns.
