To five-year-old-Jack, Room is the world. . . . It’s where he was born, it’s where he and his Ma eat and sleep and play and learn. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits.
Room is home to Jack, but to Ma it’s the prison where she has been held for seven years. Through her fierce love for her son, she has created a life for him in … him in this eleven-by-eleven-foot space. But with Jack’s curiosity building alongside her own desperation, she knows that Room cannot contain either much longer.
Room is a tale at once shocking, riveting, exhilarating–a story of unconquerable love in harrowing circumstances, and of the diamond-hard bond between a mother and her child.

Beautifully and believably narrated by five-year-old Jack, this suspenseful tale of two lives reclaimed from a living nightmare is hard to put down. I became a Donohue fan after finishing this sensitive and moving story. Parental devotion and love, female courage, and the relationship between mother and child make this an inspiring, memorable …
One of my favorite all-time books. Devastatingly brilliant. Written from the perspective of a young boy born into captivity to a kidnapped mother who must find creative ways for him to develop and survive.
Unique. Disturbing. A great read!
Very well-written. The topic of the book is very difficult to read about; however, Emma Donoghue did a phenomenal job of realistically portraying the entire story. The five-year-old narrator, Jack, makes the story unique and even more powerful. I have never read or heard of any book like this. It’s the most well-written book I have read about …
Truly remarkable! Draws you in, making it hard to put the book down. Wonderful read told from a different stand point than normal which made it more interesting.
This is a book I did NOT want to end. I was curious how the author would finish it without it being a fairy tale they lived happily ever after ending. And it wasn’t it was just beautiful they whole way through!
A great book. Great narrators, especially the 5 year old boy and his Mother. Excellent message about the differences in perspective and a story of the courage of a mother.
This book was very well written. The characters were well developed and believable. I had to remind myself this was a novel and not a true story.
Powerfully moving
There are so many interesting aspects of this story. The story is told from the perspective of five year old Jack. He is intriguing, funny as well as heart breaking in his view of the world. His mother’s ordeal and approach is equally compelling. I wonderful look at the parent/child relationship and the wider society outside of their world. I …
Wow! Could that happen??
Ultimate tear-jerker.
Couldn’t put it down … uncomfortable but thought provoking read…
This book was very twisted and unlike anything I have ever read before. It is written from the perspective of a five year old boy. A five year old boy that believes that the whole world is just the small room that he is in.
I would recommend the book to anyone looking for a read that is haunting and the movie to anyone who loves suspense.
