Carol Ericson
A rookie with the TDC, Aria, is thrown into action on her first day. Following leads with Grayson, one of the victims’ brother, leads you on an action packed adventure of dead end after dead end with twists and turns that keeps you not wanting to put it down.
Strong characters working together to bring about justice for the victims and their families. A great addition to the Tactical Crime Division series.
Author Carol Ericson’s exciting new romantic suspense novel, “Rookie Instincts”, begins with a chilling, compelling scene that is the start of an intense investigation into a deadly opioid drug ring. Aria Calletti, a former Detroit police officer who specialized in undercover narcotics work, had also trained with the FBI in Quantico. She is now the newest member of the elite Tactical Crime Division, a highly-trained unit featuring individuals with very special skills such as weapons, crime scene investigation, protection, negotiation, and IT. She hopes that her background in narcotics crimes will give her leverage as a team member. Her first assignment involves the murders of two young women, similar in appearance, both carrying the same ID, and both found with packets of opioids. One striking difference–one of the young women had been accompanied by a baby boy who had been spared by the killer. Grayson Rhodes, a Detroit businessman, is desperate to find his missing sister, Chloe, and her child. Starting his own investigation, he has gone undercover as a dockworker in the area which he feels holds clues to Chloe’s disappearance. Tragedy will bring Aria and Grayson together, and they must work side-by-side to find a killer and protect the life of an innocent child. Is there hope that something good will survive the aftermath of so much pain? Can healing love bring light into the darkness of danger and clear the way for a bright and happy future? Once again, author Carol Ericson has created an involving story with compelling, interesting characters in a romantic suspense tale that you won;t put down until you have read the last page.

(4.5) What a great start to a new series. Suspense, intrigue with a slight hint of romance. it starts off with a murder and it just keeps on going. Love the interplay between Aria (the new kid on the FBI team) and the rest of the team. Her knowledge and willingness to work with other law enforcement members, never realizing shes got game. I think Grayson is a hunk 🙂 The real corker is his intelligence, his pain with the a sister who is a drug addict, his willingness to be there, to help and the knowledge that you don’t give money tp an addict, any addict, you feed their addiction when you do. It was one fast ride and the culprit at the end was a tad surprising. Thank you for the arc Carol Ericson! I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.
Rubbed my hands together on this one because I love when I can get in at the beginning of the series. It is also a intrigue which is a favorite of mine. Aria is looking for a killer is targeting women that have the same things and add to it now with a baby too. When she gets a surprise partner whom has a personal stake in this, Grayson is looking for answers too. As the hunt is on you also are on adrenaline while you also get to see a budding relationship. You have to stay sharp because this is a fast one with that in mind you do not want to miss a thing. Being a newbie we see her grown in more ways than one. Readers are gonna love this one with this city being a hot bed.
A mysterious new case will keep you on the edge of your seat! With the first book in the new Tactical Crime Division: Traverse City series Carol Ericson takes us quickly into the heart of the crime in ROOKIE INSTINCTS. While I didn’t find the instant love between the two main characters believable with how little time they spent together, I thought the mystery and suspense throughout the building of the case was spot on. I’m looking forward to more in the series!
Aria is an easy to like character, and as the newest member of the team, she proves her abilities quickly.
Grayson is willing to put himself out there however he needs to in order to find info about what happened to his half-sis.
I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a dramatic and suspenseful story with bit of romance mixed in.
What is TCD? Who are the impressive and not so impressive characters that we get to meet? Aria, Grayson, Chloe, Tony, Brandy, and Alana? What do they each do for a living? The reason they all become a part of this story is sad. Who are the good guys and who are the bad guys? I could not help but cry at the Prologue of this book. Oh goodness… What heart to heart do Alana and Aria end up having? Oh, I liked Opaline, Axel, and Selena. Not sure how I felt about Max or Carly, until about 1/2 way through the book. I found myself liking Grayson pretty quickly.

This was a well-written, entertaining book. Aria has just joined the Tactical Crime Division and is eager to solve the recent murders of women found with the same IDs. Grayson’s half sister has disappeared and he is risking everything to find out what happened. The action was constant, the story was fast-paced and I didn’t want to put it down. This book can be read as a standalone story, though it is book 1 in the Tactical Crime Division: Traverse City Book 1 series. I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the next book in the series as well as other books by this author.
This looks likes it’s going to be a great series. I enjoyed this first book and being introduced to the characters. It centers on a group of FBI people who are good in particular areas and they are dispatched to different areas when crimes happen. Two women have been killed and have the exact same IDs and similar looks. The TCD is called in to find out who killed them and how they are tied together. The second woman had a baby with her and that turns out to be the nephew of Grayson Rhodes who was “undercover” as a dockworker trying to find info on his sister. He’s not law enforcement but he just wants to find his sister. Aria Caletti works for the TCD and I love the chemistry between her and Grayson. As they work together, along with the other TCD members, can they bring down the drug kingpin responsible for the women’s deaths? I was rooting for Aria and Grayson all along. Aria is the rookie in the bunch but she feels confident that she can use her past knowledge to help out. I recommend this book!
Intriguing, suspenseful story. This book will draw you in from the first page and will keep you in the action with the Tactical Crime Division agents until the final page is turned. The romance element is there but solving the case is the primary story. I think it will be interesting to get to know more about these agents in this Tactical Crime Division.
Good story that had me hooked from beginning to end. Aria is the newest member of the Tactical Crime Division team and arrived just in time to participate in their most recent case. Young women have turned up dead, each bearing identical IDs. In a strange turn of events, a baby was found with the most recent victim. While investigating that murder, Aria learns of a missing person report filed for a woman and her baby. This puts Aria in contact with the woman’s brother, Grayson.
Grayson is worried about his half-sister, Chloe, and her son, Danny. They never showed up for Thanksgiving dinner. Chloe may be an addict, but when she makes a promise, she keeps it. The last time he talked to her, she mentioned Port Huron, so he is now pretending to be a dockworker and hopes to learn something about her disappearance.
I liked both Aria and Grayson. Aria is very good at what she does. She began her career as a Detroit street cop and did some undercover work before the TCD recruited her. She has excellent instincts, and though she was a little nervous at first, she fit in with the team very quickly. Grayson is a successful businessman who loves his younger sister. He blames himself somewhat for Chloe’s problems and is determined to do whatever he must to find her and Danny.
I liked the first meeting between Aria and Grayson. There was no doubt about the immediate connection between them, though Aria was careful to be professional. I ached for Gray when he was so hopeful that she was in jail, only to find out that she was dead. The scene at the morgue was heartbreaking, and Gray’s determination to find her killer was understandable. As Gray carried out his plans and Aria worked the FBI side, they spent more time together. The sparks between them continued to grow, sometimes at inconvenient moments. Aria tries to resist, aware that her job makes relationships difficult, but she can’t deny her growing feelings for him. It was interesting to see Gray interact with Aria. He knows that she is a fully capable FBI agent, but his innate protectiveness makes him worry over her safety. He tried her patience a few times with that protectiveness until one event brought the reality into focus for him. I loved the ending and seeing how Gray and Aria took a realistic look at their prospects for the future. I hope to see them in future books and catch up on their romance.
The suspense of the story was excellent. From the moment of Chloe’s shooting to the end of the book, I was hooked on the story. I loved seeing each of the TCD agents put their unique talents to work to solve the case. Aria’s instincts in thinking outside the box were excellent, and she arrived at some interesting conclusions. I understood her skepticism over Gray’s “undercover” intentions, but she quickly learned that his instincts were also good. As Gray’s actions led to an arrest, the intensity steadily increased, and more information came to light. The search for the “kingpin” took an unexpected twist, and the final confrontation had me on the edge of my seat until it was all over.
I enjoyed meeting the other members of the team and look forward to reading their stories. Max and Alex both have fascinating histories, and I am intrigued by the relationship between the two sisters, Ophelia and Selena. There was a heartbreaking scene with Aria and the team’s leader, Alana, that made the book’s theme even more poignant.
Aria Calletti is a brand new member of the FBI Tactical Crime Unit(TCU). Her first day on the job the unit was handed a case of two murdered women who looked a lot alike and had ID’s with the same name. They also had a bag of Dance Fever (a street name for Fentanyl) on them. Looks like a major drug ring operating in Port Huron, Michigan. The strange thing in this case was that a baby was found next to the second murder victim. Someone called 911 about a baby that looked abandoned. Aria and another member of her team drove to the location where the second body was found. They found a piece of evidence the police seemed to have missed and turned that evidence over to Detective Massey of the Port Huron PD. This cooperation led to Detective Massey letting them know about a man who filed a Missing Person report for his sister and her baby. That man turned out to be Grayson Rhodes. He is undercover in Port Huron posing as a dock worker while searching for his sister and nephew because his sister mentioned being in that area the last time he heard from her. Aria and Grayson started spending time together because Grayson wasn’t giving up his search even though the FBI had been called in. Aria knew she shouldn’t get involved with Grayson while investigating the case but the attraction was too strong to ignore.
Grayson Rhodes is a wealthy, successful business owner from Detroit. His sister and nephew never showed up for Thanksgiving dinner and even though Chloe was a drug addict, if she told him she was coming to visit, she always did. Something was wrong. That’s how Grayson ended up as an undercover dock worker in Port Huron. He hoped to get information about Chloe since Port Huron was the last place Chloe mentioned to him. He filed a Missing Person report in the hope the police could find Chloe and his nephew Danny. Because of the report Grayson met Aria Calletti. They worked well together and his being on the docks brought valuable information furthering the murder investigation. Now he may have lost his sister but at least the tragedy brought him to meet and fall for Aria.
Rookie Instincts by Carol Ericson is the first book in this author’s new series, Tactical Crime Division: Traverse City. This story is a wonderful introduction to the members of TCD. It gives some background for the men and women who comprise this unit. I’m sure they will all have stories as intriguing as newest member Aria’s. This storyline held my attention and the conflict and resolution were well plotted out. Super beginning to this series!
Rookie Instincts was another great plot for the Tactical Team. With new addition to the team, Special Agent Aria Calletti, the action gets underway immediately when girls start turning up dead with a bullet in their chest and a bag of drugs on their body.
I enjoyed this fast-paced intrigue that told an excellent story of love, loss, forgiveness and the trials of drug addiction. If you love fast-paced mysteries with a little bit of love in the mix, you definitely don’t want to miss this series or Rookie Instincts.
