Ronaldo wants to be like his hero, Vixen, and become part of the North Pole Reindeer Team. To help him learn to fly, Ronaldo and his friends have been attending The Reindeer Flying Academy. He and his friend Rudi have been practicing their flying skills for some time and today is special at the Academy: It is competition day. Now’s the time to show off all of his skills so Santa will want to pick him to be on the reindeer team.
Ronaldo: The Reindeer Flying Academy is a cute children’s story. A perfect holiday story, this book will be a hit with children anytime of the year. With vibrant illustrations, a great story, and excellent writing you can’t go wrong. Even as an adult I really enjoyed this book.
IMAGINE! See it, feel it, believe it! – 6 stars for this fabulous book
‘Ronaldo’ is a most exciting fairytale. The child in myself has enjoyed so much. From the first line this book I was so soaked up, I was totally in the book. ‘Ronaldo: The Reindeer Flying Academy’ is so very well written. I adore her writing. In almost every page of this book something new was going to take place, and I couldn’t stop reading because another adventure was announced, and made me so curious of what was going to come. As we in Dutch say ‘ik hing aan de schrijfster’s lippen om zeker te zijn geen letter te zullen missen’ (I hang on the writers lips to be sure not to miss a word of her story).
I adored the underlying message in this book. Ronaldo’s grandpa told him the most important sentence to remember ‘ IMAGINE! See it, feel it, believe it!’. This was such a find of the author to give a precious gift to children, so they would remember those words. At not one moment in the book it sounded like the author was preaching morals. It just belonged on a natural way to the story.
As I said before I think Maxine Sylvester is a very gifted storyteller. I loved the drawings in the book. Thinking of grandpa’s words and Ronaldo’s life motive, which I enjoyed so much, I just want to give this book 6 stars!
Happy, silly and endearing
Author and illustrator Maxine Sylvester has created an endearing character in Ronaldo – a top flying cadet at the prestigious Reindeer Flying Academy – who loves carrots dipped in hot chocolate. While he trains to win the coveted Golden Snowflake Medal for even more spectacular aviation skills, Renaldo discovers his beloved carrots have been stolen from his backpack by a mysterious thief – for the sixth time!
As Ronaldo tries to find the culprit the story unfolds into a humorous buddy story, a demonstration of personal sacrifice, and of a unique friendship with a lost wolf cub, when it’s not the popular – or prudent – thing to do.
The book has a happy, silly, slapstick feel to it that made me laugh out loud a few times. There are the familiar reindeer names: Rudi (short for Rudolph), Vixen, Blitzen, Comet, and Dasher with their own unique personalities and place in the scheme of things. The interior illustrations are black and white but no less adorable and effective than the bright cover art.
As adults reading kids books we have to suspend our disbelief – and our adulthood – and remember how much we treasured reading fanciful stories about anthropomorphic animals. (I still do!). The message of the book is that “Good friends make happy times brighter.” Well, good books make happy reading better. This is one good book.
Suitable for reading to the little ones or for early middle-grade readers, this well-written, delightful book is filled with humor and teaches about perseverance. The illustrations will delight. I recommend it for the whole family.
What a fun character Ronaldo the Reindeer is. Kids are going to enjoy following along on his journey at the Flying Academy. Wonderful story for kids.

Learning to Help Santa
This is a super cute elementary school level book about Ronaldo, a young reindeer and his life with his parents and as a student at the reindeer flying academy. Even the parts that took place at home with his mother and father were cute and well done. But the book got even more interesting when Ronaldo went off to the academy. The book does have occasional illustrations, though they were black and white in the PDF ARC copy I received. If you have a child who enjoys “academy” stories like Harry Potter and is enchanted with all that may go on at the North Pole, she or he might like the idea of a school just for reindeer as they learn to fulfill their destinies as Santa’s helpers.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
The very idea of a flying academy for reindeers was beautiful. The illustrations, the easy to read chapters and the fun, as Rudolph learns his lessons was amazing. Loved it.
Fun holiday chapter series for young readers, with great illustrations!
