More adventures abound with Ronaldo and Rudi in this second installment of the Flying Reindeer Academy. Together, they learn to overcome a difficult challenge. While I have not yet read the third book in the series, this one is so far my favorite.
Maxine Sylvester tells a great tale that is geared toward children. The characters are well developed, and the language and story line is perfect for children of any age to enjoy. I’m looking forward to reading the third book in this series.
I was provided a copy of this book by the author for the purpose of this review. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
Ronaldo is a young reindeer with the best friend ever, Rudi (aka Rudolph). He is in flying school and is on track to get the fastest record. But first, there is a mystery to solve. Someone has been stealing his carrots and he and Rudi have a plan to find out who that person (err, animal) is.
This book was great fun. I enjoyed the antics of Ronaldo, Rudi, and their new wolf friend, Ernie. The theme and the tone of the book are perfect for middle-grade readers. I particularly loved that it shows that kindness, loyalty, and friendship gets you ahead in the end. Just because Ernie is different, it doesn’t mean that they can’t be friends and take care of each other. A wonderful lesson for the whole world to embrace.
Ronaldo: The Phantom Carrot Snatcher by Maxine Sylvester was a wonderful children’s book. It is a cute story about a reindeer and his friend at the Flying Academy. The story teaches about the value of friendship and what it means to put your friend’s well being before personal gain. It also brings up judging someone on their personality and not on how they look.
Ronaldo is a level two cadet at the Reindeer Flying Academy and wears his two snowflakes that show his rank on his jacket with pride. He consistently stays at the top of his class and is in the running for getting the Golden Snowflake for having the best speed overall for the year. His best friend, Rudi is in fourth place but that does not seem to affect their friendship.
One day after completing his flying challenge Ronaldo sets down his bag with carrots in it to watch Rudi finish his challenge. When the friends return to eat the carrots they find the carrots are
missing and this is not the first time this has happened. On the way home the two friends discuss how to find the animal responsible for the missing carrots. Not too far from his home, Ronaldo meets Ernie who is lost. He agrees to help Emie find her family again in secret. Rudi helps develop a plan to get a message to Ernie’s family but it will cost Ronaldo the speed record. Ronaldo decides that helping a friend is more important than breaking a record and takes the risk to help her.
What I liked best about his book was how Ronaldo chooses to put his new friend over getting an award for himself. Ronaldo and Rudi also overcome their fear of The Forest of Doom in order to help Ernie and Ernie saves Ronaldo from bullies. There really isn’t much that I did not like about this
book. If I had to pick something it would be that I could have done without the fart jokes, but I understand the appeal they have to younger children.
Target readers for this book are elementary students. Second-grade students should handle this book without a problem. Some words may need to be looked up but not too many of them. Having to look up a few words would help expand a young child’s vocabulary so that is just another plus for this book. I rate this book a perfect 4 out of 4. This book has a great storyline that moves along steadily and the chapters are short enough that they do not discourage young readers. The characters are cute and even the artwork is done nicely.
With the holiday season coming up, this is a definite read for children who need a touch of hope and humor. Loosely based on the concepts of reindeer who fly through the sky, with a famous one named Rudolph, this beautiful picture book takes off dashing from there… the lead reindeer character, Ronaldo, is named for a famous soccer player — you can imagine the great amount of other antics incorporated in the rest of the book. The background story that Maxine Sylvester has created is pure imagination woven tightly with a reality we all know.
In this second book in the series, the reindeer crew, in school to learn how to properly fly, meet a young wolf who needs help finding her pack. She’s feisty and protective, loyal and adorable. The book makes you feel part of the story, including the wonderful drawings done by the author herself. Add in a contest, a scary forest and a kooky instructor, there are bunches of warm moments and great arcs to tantalize kids with as you read to them. I highly recommend this series.
Ronaldo: The Phantom Carrot Snatcher is the second book I have read in this series by Maxine Sylvester. Written and illustrated for young middle grade/chapter book readers, Ronaldo combines a lot of humor and fantasy into interesting and varied characters, mostly “humanized” reindeer who can fly. These plot/story driven books are delightfully illustrated, colorful, and fun. I highly recommend them to parents as “read-to-your-children books” and read-alone books for those of the appropriate age.
Good friends make happy days brighter and problems lighter
Once again Maxine Sylvester takes us on a beautiful written story in to the world of Ronaldo the reindeer flying cadet and his best friend Rudi.
As a big fan of the first Ronaldo book ‘Ronaldo: The Reindeer Flying Academy’ I was looking so much forward to read this next Ronaldo book and I am not disappointed.
Even my excitement was bigger while reading the first book (not for nothing I have it 6 stars), I enjoyed this one too.
When Ronaldo meets up with Ernie, a young wolf, his fantasy and reindeer-fear of these blood-thirsty-wolves froze him almost to death. From that moment the book slurped me completely. Maxine Sylvester is a really good writer and an amazing illustrator. While reading, at no moment my children’s soul felt the author was preaching important lessons of life. The story was so natural, I had entered the book and it was as if I lived all adventures together with Ronaldo and Rudi and Ernie.
I’m not going repeating the story line, that is for you to find out. It absolute is worth it! And what a strong moral we get all by this way. Reindeers fear wolves the most in life, but when they meet up personally, there are so wonderful things happening. Again: read the story and it takes you to a world of friendship and surprising adventures.
As aunt Ernestinkle resumes so well ‘good friends make happy days brighter and problems lighter’. For all this: I give this book 5 stars and do recommend it, you’ll not regret.
I was given the opportunity to read this children’s book a few months ago, and my one regret is that I didn’t get a chance to read it sooner. From the writing to the illustrations, author Maxine Sylvester has penned a delightful tale.
Ronaldo aka Ronny is the reindeer we don’t hear about in Christmas stories. While all of Santa’s reindeer are mentioned, even Rudolph, Ronny is the star of this story. And he totally deserves that honor.
RONALDO: THE PHANTOM CARROT SNATCHER is a story with so many wonderful messages for young readers. Really, for readers of all ages. Lessons in friendship, diversity, and good sportsmenship are all handled in such a way, that readers will enjoy learning life lessons.
Of course, I wouldn’t have agreed to read RTPCS if it didn’t have a mystery element. There were actually a couple. Missing carrots, and a lost “child”. Both were handled quickly as to keep the younger readers attention.
If you’re looking for a book for your in the four to ten year old range (depending on rather you’re reading it to the child, or they will be reading it), you can’t go wrong with RONALDO: THE PHANTOM CARROT SNATCHER.
What a fun and charming story. Wonderful and interesting characters. Kids will love reading this book full of fun adventures with some twists and turns. Good book.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
