An easy read and a joy with an amazing message of friendship
The third book in the Ronaldo series by Maxine Sylvester, ‘Rudi’s Birthday Extravaganza’ is once again a joy to read.
We meet up again with Ronaldo and his best friend Rudi. They’re still cadets in the Flying Academy, but unfortunately Rudi is wounded. Friend Ronaldo stands by his mate, he accompanies him to the doctor. Soon it will be Rudi’s birthday and Ronaldo takes a job so he has money to buy a present for his friend.
When Rudi shout that the workshop of their hero Vixen Pederson sounds stupid, Ronaldo was upset. What was going on with his friend, how could he say something like that? Than Ronaldo found out the reason (this you have to read in the book) and tried to help his friend.
Yes also reindeers have troubles in life. But by their friendship and taking care for each other they find solutions for all problems. No way that Monty the Moose would not be able to come to Rudi’s amazing birthday party. You can say it was indeed an extravaganza moment.
It is clear I do recommend this new Ronaldo book.
Ronaldo and Rudi are back again for more fun and adventures in this book. Ronaldo takes a job to save up for the perfect gift for Rudi’s birthday, and they are both trying to get into a special reindeer workshop hosted by Vixen.
We learn about responsibility and friendships in this book. It’s a great Children’s read with fun illustrations.
I received a copy of this book from the author for the purpose of this review.
Outstandingly great! A must read for adults and the children they love!
The book Ronaldo: Rudis Birthday Extravaganza by Maxine Sylvester followed perfectly in the footsteps of the previous book in the Ronaldo series. It comes right after Ronaldo: The Phantom Carrot Snatcher that I previously gave a 4 out of 4. This is another wonderful Ronaldo book although it was not quite what I expected from the title. For some reason, I was expecting the entire book to take place at Rudi’s birthday party but that was not the case.
The book opens to Ronaldo looking at his options for Rudi’s birthday present. Then Rudi’s mother shows up asking Ronaldo for his help. Rudi needs to go the doctor for an injured hoof but he is afraid of needles and is refusing to go. Ronaldo agrees to go along so that he can support and comfort
Rudi. On the way home Ronaldo ends up helping his favorite baker with her shopping bags. After learning that her hip is hurt Ronaldo offers to deliver her cakes to the bakery for her.
On the news, Ronaldo learns of Vixen’s Workshop and his parents agree to let him go. Rudi wants to go as well but can’t because his father just lost his job. Ronaldo takes his earnings from the cake deliveries and tries to pay for Rudi to go to the Workshop himself, unfortunately, there is no room. Little does Ronaldo know Rudi’s father got a job with the baker and also tried to get Rudi into the Workshop but was unable to do so as well. At his party, Rudi got a wonderful surprise by meeting Vixen and discovering he was going to be able to go to the Workshop anyway.
What I liked best was that once again Ronaldo puts his friendship with Rudi first. He offers his own money that he worked hard for to try to do something that meant a lot to his friend and that is not all he did Rudi. This book also teaches about honesty as well as the value of friendship. What I did not like about this book was actually similar to my complaint about the previous book. This time there is an entire chapter about Ronaldo breaking wind. Again I do understand the usefulness of it in this book as a consequence of Ronaldo being greedy with suckers and cake. I just could do without it.
Target readers for this book are the exact same as the previous one. Elementary students, probably around second grade could handle this book without a problem. Chapters are short and words such as “apprentice” are explained within the story for readers who might not be familiar with them. I rate this book 4 out of 4. It is a great children’s book with a wonderful storyline. There are even a few nice surprises along the way. I look forward to my own children being old enough to enjoy the Ronaldo
books.
Book Review
Ronaldo: Rudi’s Birthday Extravaganza, the third in an adorable children’s picture book series, written in 2017 by Maxine Sylvester, is another winner. In this edition, Ronaldo’s best friend Rudi hurts his hoof, but won’t go to the doctor to heal it. Rudi’s mother enlists Ronaldo to help trick Rudi into the office visit, which leads to even more hilarity and conflict. Along the way, Ronaldo picks up a side job to help earn some money for a new flying class, but after Rudi’s dad runs into money issues, he’s unable to attend. When it comes time for his birthday party, it’s up to Ronaldo to find a way to cheer up a very sad Rudi. And boy does he find a way!
The creativity in this series is magnificent. Not only do you have a wonderful family and village full of reindeer, but you have tons of great locations, events and themes. Children easily learn how to interpret a range of feelings, from conquering fears of the doctor to not having enough money to go to a special class. It’s a realistic lesson built into a cute set of characters, full of charm and emotion. Adding to the great story are beautiful drawings filled with humor, detail and imagination. I enjoyed the bakery setting in this edition, almost wanting to taste some of the delicious looking and sounding carrot cakes. They can probably be enjoyed by humans, too… right? 🙂
I applaud Maxine Sylvester for creating such a lovable series — a perfect gift for someone’s birthday or the holidays. If you love animals and fun in the snow, this is a must read!
This is a fun adventure about two young reindeer one of whom has a birthday coming up. It takes overcoming a lot of obstacles and determination to be able to give Rudy a great birthday party. The book has wonderful, creative Illustrations featuring whimsical reindeer characters with great facial expressions. I am sure children of both genders will be draw to the characters and will stimulate their creativity and imagination. The narrative is told from the point of view of a young reindeer and is both age appropriate and interesting. This book provides the opportunity for children to think about and discus with their parents many important concepts, such as bullying, helping others, being a good friend, trying hard and overcoming fears. It is a sweet book that would enhance any home library.

I love this book! The entire story is great for those younger kids and people like me who love books like this though we are older. I did read this to a few of my younger clients (with autism/behavior difficulties) and they were awed into silent listening, with great questions about the story and the message. This is the 3rd book in a series and I must read them all.
