Good book, written using the characters developed by Tony Hillerman, the late father of the author of The Rock with Wings. I think the series will get better as she goes along and has more experience with the characters. Right now they seem a little stiff, but this is only the second of three that are out so far.
I read this book before but still found myself drawn in by the characters. As a bonus you get to learn about Navaho traditions and their current lives and living conditions. I would recommend this series to anyone
I love all the Hillerman books . The daughter is as good as her dad and maybe even better for being a little more direct in her writing. I’ve been reading these books starting with the dad for at least 10 years. I always look for them.
I loved this book. Love how Anne develops the characters and yet continues some in her father’s tradition. Love the scenery descriptions. I have driven there many times. So real for me. Highly recommend.
Anne Hillerman has ably picked up her father, Tony Hillerman’s mantle in her continuation of the Leaphorn and Chee novels but with a shift in perspective by elevating Jim Chee’s wife and fellow Navajo Tribal Police officer, Bernadette Manuelito to be a primary character while reducing the legendary detective Joe Leaphorn to a supporting role. …
Wonderful continuation of her father’s characters. I will continue to follow this story line as long as she keeps writing.
Ann Hillerman continues in the tradition of her father, using the same well established characters. Satisfying action, good plot, credible dialogue and the occasional surprise.
Always eager to learn about Indian culture . And reading her books is a great way to learn .
If you loved her Father’s books, you’ll love hers too. They take you to another place. Picture the land as you read. See what here and now is in a different way of thing and being.
I was a great fan of the late Tony Hillerman’s Navajo police mysteries. I loved the vast panoramas he drew of the Navajo reservation, the great distances that forced a slowing down of life. I drank in the Navajo culture, and I admired the characters of Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee. When Hillerman passed away in 2008, I mourned not only the loss of a …
In Rock with Wings, Hillerman develops the character of Bernie Manuelito into a highly relatable woman–juggling her job, marriage, a wayward sister, and an ailing mother. This isn’t to say that the story isn’t well developed, too. While husband Chee deals with a Hollywood group out at Monument Valley, Bernie’s persistence in discovering why a …
Another winner in Anne Hillerman’s Leaphorn, Chee & Manuelito series. Anne’s book keep getting better and better. You will love her stories and her characters, and will be amazed at the depth of her knowledge about Navajo customs, thinking, and way of life. Highly recommended.
She is as good as her father…I have several of their books in my person library.
I loved Tony Hillerman’s books, and I was so happy to see his daughter Anne had taken up his series with Chee, Leaphorn, and Manuelito. She doesn’t disappoint. Her writing is excellent and I love the characters. She doesn’t quite evoke the feeling of the Navajo Nation the way her father did, but she’s close. The only small complaint I have about …
A razor-sharp-witted tale from an expert storyteller Anne Hillerman, Rock With Wings will whisk you away to the Navajo Tribal Lands and their neighbouring town of Shiprock, peopled by familiar and much-loved characters such as retired lawman Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, now mentoring new Tribal Officers, both Navajo and White. These include Bernadette …
Anne Hillerman writes every bit as good as her father Tony Hillerman…I’m so glad she is continuing these stories…I was devastated over Tony Hillerman’s passing…I have read every one of his books…and now I have these books to read…don’t pass them up!!
I loved the atmosphere that the author creates. I captures the southwest.
As her father before her, this is a wonderfully crafted mystery with interesting and informative insights into the Native American life and the sights and life of the Southwest United States. Bravo to Anne on continuing the saga.
I loved reading about the job of being a police woman in a rural setting. It is a completely different world from the urban police dramas in the movies and on television. Bernie Manuelito use of her culture and training to solve crimes is uniquely Navajo and it’s a pleasure to ride on her shoulder.
Anne Hillerman is a master at Southwest history
