I love seeing Bernadette through a woman’s eyes. This book continues with characters we are familiar with from Tony Hillerman’ s books. They are believable and fun to read about. I plan to read everything Anne Hillerman writes because it is like visiting old friends.
The Navajo police series are entertaining and enjoyable mysteries with a wonderful insight into Navajo culture, which is interesting in itself. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a great read.
Entertaining book. I enjoyed the story as I do all of her books. Can’t wait for the next one.
Unusual setting and characters, realistic action, a glimpse into the Navaho way of life. Highly recommended1
Anne Hillerman is not Tony– but she is definitely a chip off the old block. Her familiarity with the Navajo people and culture, and the southwest in general fill the story with plenty of local color. She has woven another tale of crime and deception that resonate with any reader who has read Tony’s work. It’s a tangled web of loose ends, …
I’ve read all of her father’s books, and am delighted that Anne Hillerman is as good an author as her father. I’ll look forward to reading more of her books.
I loved her father’s books and am so pleased that Anne Hillerman has continued writing where her father left off.
Ann writes great follow-ups to her father’s books — all of which currently reside on my bookshelf, since I periodically reread them. Highly recommended.
Love that she took over characters that her father created. She admirally continue his legacy. Great read.
I love the description of the Southwestern landscape as well as the interaction of the characters. Character development in my opinion is excellent. The mystery is indeed not one easily guessed. I read this on 2015 so I am unable to be more specific. If you enjoy Tony Hillerman’s books you will probably enjoy his daughter Anne’s continuation of …
Anne Hillerman seamlessly picks up where her father left off. Rock with Wings is a typical Hillerman mystery. Meaning, it’s brilliantly thought out and such a joy to read as the story unfolds. By now after reading many of her father’s books, the characters are like old friends. The desert Southwest provides and unremitting grand back drop in …
just like Tony H. This is, as Lincoln would say “this is a good book for those who like this kind of book” If you like Tony Hillerman, you will love this book.
Bernie is a believable character who copes with everyday situations right beside mysterious circumstances. Cher and Bernie are an awesome couple. Nice to hear about their old friend as well.
Well done Anne! It is not, in my view, often that an offspring of a famous author actually writes with the same style and sense of place as their parent, but Anne Hillerman does as fine a job as her Dad at capturing the mystique of the Navaho nation and vicinity. It’s as if I’m reading another great novel by her father with just a few different …
In her father’s style, with her father’s characters, she continues in a tradition of building a story that is believable and warm. The scene setting, the native traditions, and the geography make this a thoroughly enjoyable read — and the plot development is very well done!
It’s very easy reading, and the author includes characters and happenings from other stories in the series. It pretty much keeps you wondering who the “who done it” is, and it is usually the very end when you find out. Good writing.
I have always really enjoyed reading the Hillerman books from both Anne and Tony. I enjoy the Navajo history, language and the mysteries that happen on the reservation. This one did not disappoint.
She is true to her father’s story line and characters. It was interesting. However I felt it ended rather than finished. Some lines stopped quickly and didn’t seem really resolved. Otherwise a good read.
Chee and Manuelito are superb, working together or as in Rocks With Wings, working separately, to keep their harsh, beautiful, and beloved homeland secure against threats from greedy film producers and corporate officials willing to kill to achieve their ends.
Ms Hillerman carries on the Navajo Tribal police stories started by her father without a hitch! The same cultural richness and mystery solving tales continue. This is a great gift to the fans of Tony Hillerman’s series of books.
