Gage Walker is a mega-talented rockstar. Gorgeous, sexy, and charming. It’s no wonder he’s the hottest thing in the music industry.
Lyris Wright is a beautiful, curvy, and confident aspiring singer. But no one wants to give her a chance as a solo artist because she doesn’t have the “right look.” It’s a humiliating blow after she’s already burned her bridges back home in Indianapolis, when she … when she defied her conservative and religious parents to head to L.A. to fulfill her lifelong dream.
Running out of options and running low on money, she auditions as a backup singer for rock-n-roller, Gage Walker. He’s blown away by her incredible voice. And captivated by her lush curves. Although Lyris needs the job, she’s not happy about working with the gorgeous musician. Not when she resents the fact that he’s been handed his career because of his looks. Little does she know that he came from very humble beginnings. People aren’t always what they seem.
Can Lyris get out of her own way, and let the attraction she feels as they tour the world take hold? Or will Gage’s popstar ex-girlfriend and meddling record label tear their all-consuming connection apart?

Hot af aaaaand
I’ll freely admit, rock star romances are my catnip. Which means I get a little stabby if I read one and it’s wahn-wahn-waaaahhhhn. Twyla Turner has never failed me before, and she damn sure didn’t with Rock the Curves! Pure rock star fantasy, complete with not just the hero tearing the stage up, but the heroine blasting her pipes too! And did she! Sigh. Together they are rock and soul (yep! Rock and SOUL!) royalty. I read this book in one go–I couldn’t put it down! The amazing characters–even the secondary ones–the story line, the back stories, the music (complete with lyrics!), the emotion, passion and, of course, the romance. Sigh. I honestly need this to be made into a movie. C’mon, Gina Prince Bythewood! Get on this!!
Lyris Walker is a curvy, gorgeous aspiring singer just looking for her big break. Unfortunately, record companies have their own idea of what is marketable. And though most of them love her voice, they don’t want a black, plus-sized woman who’s either too rock or too soul. When she’s offered the opportunity to sing back up for Gage Walker, a rock ‘n’ roll star, she grudgingly accepts. Even if she’s way too good to be a back-up singer–especially to someone who’s just been handed his career because of his looks…his admittedly very hot looks. But still, everyone has to start somewhere and it pays good… Gage is immediately knocked on his ass by Lyris. And not just by her amazing voice, that he, too, acknowledges is way too good to back him up. It’s *her.* Her beauty, her lush body that she carries with confidence. She is sexy as hell to him, and he wants her in his band and his bed.
Gage was the perfect cinnamon roll hero–he was a hard worker, was tough when he needed to be just because of the business he’s in. And a recently ended relationship with a spoiled pop star has left him both wary and hungry for a deeper connection with someone. He’s also so damn sweet. To his band, he’s loyal because they’re family, and this man is alll about family. By blood and by choice. His heart is huge, and he’s determined to give it to Lyris. But Lawd, does she try him! Lyris gave up her home and a relationship with her parents when she defied her religious background to pursue her dreams. Having door after door shut in her face has frustrated and yes, disheartened her. At first, she resents Gage because she believe he’s just been handed his career. But then she hears him sing, witnesses his work ethic and then learns his history that he doesn’t share with anyone–and she realizes this man earned his place. She respects him, but she’s still scared to go all in with him. They live in a world where people, from the industry to the fans, expect him to be with a certain kind of person–like his ex. And bucking that expectation could cost both of them their careers and, more importantly, her heart. But these two are FIYAH on stage and together. And Gage is willing to fight for Lyris. Reading along while these two traveled the pitted road pockmarked with a selfish ex, rabid fans, societal expectations and greedy labels was as amazing as a rock star opera! Because always, always love prevailed.
Yes, Rock the Curves was fiction, but it touched on very real subjects like how people view plus-sized people–not just women. It reflected on the good and horrible sides of social media and the jaded industry that tries to determine what we all listen to and see. But it also showed us a beautiful, big confident woman who LOVED her curves and had no problem flaunting them. I ADORED that about Lyris. It also celebrated the power of familial and romantic love and friendship. It made me believe all over again in the power of love, sacrifice and the human spirit. This book was just amazing!
So I saved this review for when my podcast episode discussing this one went live (and now it is!). I know what I thought, but I wanted to see what other readers thought, hence the book chat.
Overall
I picked this book up just because of the cover, (more on that in the podcast) but I’m glad I did. This was an entertaining story with likeable characters and an engaging plot. I did have some issues with Lyris’ insecurities, but I felt it was somewhat understandable. What I really loved were the sex scenes in this one. They were steamy and inventive! I felt the heat between these two and I was there for it! It would have been nice to go more in depth about Gage’s weight struggles and his weight journey, but I like that it was included at all. It gave more empathy to an already lovable character.

Loved it! Fat heroines for the win!
Yes, Twyla Turner, you did your thing with this book. Let’s say I was hooked from the moment I read the heroine’s name, Lyris. Lyris and Gage are an awesome match. Gage is a person that see’s beauty on the inside as well as on the outside. He knows what it’s like to be the one nobody wants to be around. Changing his life opened up a lot of doors for him and one of those being the love of a great woman. Lyris has encountered heartbreak and setbacks in her life and doesn’t want to go down that road again. Once the realize that being together is better than being apart, they create wonderful music, literally. Great read and I highly recommend you picking it up today.
I loved Lyric and Gage’s story. Gage is so romantic and supportive of Lyric! I loved how the characters stayed true to themselves despite the pressures of what society thinks they should be. If you like rock star romances you will love this book!
