I hate to say this because I was such a big fan of the late Robert B. Parker, but Ace Atkins might write Spenser even better than Parker did. This is just one of the Spenser novels he’s written since Parker’s death, but they’re all top-notch. Atkins has got the witty dialogue, the action scenes, the tough but sensitive Spenser detective character we’ve all loved for so long down perfect. And his stories are good too. Highly reommended.
Typical Spenser novel. This one was particularly fun because it went into the history of the area a bit and being from there, I quite appreciated it. Hawk’s not in this one, but lots of other favorites are. Well done.
Spenser’s character continuity was mostly on point; there was one scene where I felt it strayed (from Bob’s writing) just a little.
4 stars.
Note:
I listened to the audiobook. 3-star performance.
Atkins knocks it out of the park again building on the Parker legacy and even improving on things. His treatment of long-suffering Spenser friend, Henry Cimoli, is wonderful and long overdue. The interplay between Spenser and Henry is fun and it’s great to see Henry get some love. Atkins has the Parker patois and wit down to an art. The series hasn’t missed a beat since Ace took over.
Best of the atkins spenser novels i have read
Parker’s character Spencer is one of my favorite tough guys. Great read.
Excellent detective book. Carries on the characters from Parkers Spenser books admirably. The writing is very much true to Parker though obviously a different writer. But no drop off in quality for characters, dialog or action.
not as good as Robert Parker but still entertaining.
Ace Atkins doing a great job in continuing the Spencer series.
Good read, but not Robert Parker
Continuing Robert Parker’s legacy, the character’s do no disappoint. eases the pain of losing the master.
This author is always a great book, and his characters are quirky and funny, along with the suspense he builds. Hawk not there in this one, but there is a new sidekick that will prove interesting.. Worth the reading…
Spenser is always Spenser, which is something good to count on.
Great read for Spenser fans!
Spencer novels always entertain
Another classic Robert B. Parker – great character handling, moves along at a brisk, entertaining pace
Ace Atkins has done an admirable job of continuing the Spenser series…Hope he continues…
I always enjoy Parker, have preferred others of his…
ACE does a real good job with the Spencer series.
More twist then a Philly Pretzel
I always like Robert Parker’s writing and this was no exception!
