Boston PI Spenser faces a hot case and a personal crisis in this adventure in Robert B. Parker’s iconic New York Times bestselling series. The fire at a boarded-up Catholic church raged hot and fast, lighting up Boston’s South End and killing three firefighters who were trapped in the inferno. A year later, as the city prepares to honor their sacrifice, there are still no answers about how the … answers about how the deadly fire started. Most at the department believe it was just a simple accident: faulty wiring in a century-old building. But Boston firefighter Jack McGee, who lost his best friend in the blaze, suspects arson.
McGee is convinced department investigators aren’t sufficiently connected to the city’s lowlifes to get a handle on who’s behind the blaze—so he takes the case to Spenser. Spenser quickly learns not only that McGee might be right, but that the fire might be linked to a rash of new arsons, spreading through the city, burning faster and hotter every night. Spenser follows the trail of fires to Boston’s underworld, bringing him, his trusted ally Hawk, and his apprentice Sixkill toe-to-toe with a dangerous new enemy who wants Spenser dead, and doesn’t play by the city’s old rules. Spenser has to find the firebug before he kills again—and stay alive himself.

Love that this series continues. Excellent read.
This is almost Robert Parker. It is not quite but could anyone really be able to be as good? It seems to be a prelude to another series of books about Z in LA. It is a good read although the premise is a little far fetched regarding the reason the people ended up in a conspiracy to set fires.
Good read, well done by Ace Atkins in the Robert Parker tradition. Spenser and his shadowy colleagues continue the fight for what is right and true. Quick, witty and always entertaining.
Entertaining – sort of. I was/am a fan of Robert B Parker. Even though I thought he was a master of the simple declarative sentence I thoroughly enjoyed his works. The story line in “Slow Burn” is good but Ace Atkins has not yet convinced me that he knows Boston and environs and has not mastered Parker’s style. As a result I’m left a little empty when I finish on of his continuation stories. Makes the originals even better!
Always enjoy a good crimey.
Robert Parker NEVER disappoints!
I am glad that someone is keeping Robert B. Parker’s characters alive.
No one can write snappy dialogue like Robert Parker. Enjoyed it, but it just isn’t the same without RBP’s crafting of crisp repartee for Spencer. And Susan was a total miss.
Not quite a real Robert B. Parker
I enjoy the repartee between Spenser and hos cohorts, and I like the humanity displayed by the good guys. Development of the plot continually piqued my interest
Good; but somehow not quite Parker…
Another enjoyable RBP book
There will never be another Robert B. This story felt more like a Stephanie Plum novel, full of jokes and attempts at humor. Nowhere near Parker’s snappy dialogue
Good read
wow!!!
It follows the famous Parker formula, which is quite comforting. The notion of great knight fighting for those unable to fight for themselves, all with sparkling dialogue is just a s feel-good today as it was 30 years ago.
Great Characters. Good Story. But the clipped style of Parjer’s dialogue was missinf. And missed
Have been a Spenser fan from way back and I am truly delighted his character is still around. I think Ace is doing a wonderful job.!
What more can I say besides GENIUS!
Not quite the same as Parker but Atkins does a good job keeping Spenser and his pals going.
