A classic story of imperiled love on the western frontiers of nineteenth-century America. “He was a young man in years, but he had the hard face and eagle eye of one matured in experience of that wild country. He bestrode a superb bay horse, dusty and travel-worn and a little lame. The rider was no light burden, judging from his height and wide shoulders; moreover, the saddle carried a canteen, … saddle carried a canteen, a rifle, and a pack. From time to time he looked back over his shoulder at the magnificent long cliff wall, which resembled a row of colossal books with leaves partly open. It was the steady, watchful gaze of a man who had left events behind him.”
So begins Jim Wales’s story in Robbers’ Roost. While a battle rages between two outlaw gangs in a remote Utah canyon, Jim struggles to rescue Helen Herrick, who has been captured and held for ransom.
Robbers’ Roost tells the story of their personal struggle to escape the clutches of the murderous outlaws while simultaneously safeguarding their passion, one that is not likely to survive the beautiful, yet deadly, terrain and people of the old American West.
Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction that takes place in the old West. Westerns–books about outlaws, sheriffs, chiefs and warriors, cowboys and Indians–are a genre in which we publish regularly. Our list includes international bestselling authors like Zane Gray and Louis L’Amour, and many more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Long before I entered 1st grade I started reading. I don’t know how, but one day I was reading, and I haven’t stopped yet! My parents had a large bookcase full of books they had enjoyed as teens and young adults. One day I pulled the book ROBBERS’ ROOST off the bookshelf and tried to “read it.” It was of course, beyond my nascent ability, but I made a resolution that someday I would read that book. So, many years have past, my deceased parents’ book collection has been dispersed, but I was delighted to see that the title ROBBERS’ ROOST was now available in electronic format. I downloaded it to my Kindle, and spent hours enjoying one of Zane Grey’s best titles.
Another Zane Grey thank you.
If you love the West, in all it’s incredible beauty, you will love Zane Grey. He travelled all over the West in the early 20th century, when the West was still wild and largely unspoiled. He got to know the people, Indians, Pioneers, Cowboys, Ranchers, Women, young people, hunters, loggers, woodsmen, Rangers, Lawmen, And Bad men of every kind and description. He had a gift for describing the country, nature and people that is nearly unmatched by anybody. There are no pictures in his books, they aren’t needed. The pictures are in the prose. He takes on important subjects. Writes simple romantic storylines, uses no profanity, no sexual situations, reveres the standards of Mormon Pioneers except for plural marriage. And deplored Eastern morality and society values. His Eastern girls all developed into good Western women. He describes the returns of WW1 veterans in their plight after the war. He describes PTSD among soldiers before the phrase was created or the problem recognized. How many came West to find physical and emotional healing through healthful, hardworking outdoor life and labor. Many veterans who were victims of mustard and chlorine gas, Tuberculosis, the Spanish Flu, or infected wounds, came West as last resort healing in the clean, healthy, dry, unpolluted air! They either struggled and survived, or died and were quietly buried. He writes about the bad treatment of Indians and persons of color, the treatment of buffalo by white hunters, depredation of wild beasts by trappers, the advancement of railroads, the rise of automobiles, silver and gold mining, gamblers, cattle drives, wild horses, Indian life. His book on the building of The Boulder/Hoover Dam is outstanding. His descriptions of Canyon Country and traveling through the area from the Grand Canyon to Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyons and desert scenery, the magnificent floods of the great desert rivers and the blooming of the deserts are superb. I read and reread his books for what he does best., descriptions of the country and the people who lived there. If the romances were simple and similar, well they are a relief from modern, sordid, pages of sexual flights of fantasy! He writes a description of Wildfire in a book by the same name , that rings true to what we see happening out there now. Except there were fewer people and no evacuations. They lived by finding ways to survive or were overrun and died. His descriptions of wild weather during trail rides, stampedes of cattle and buffalo, the hey days of big cattle rustling outfits, and the wild open towns with gamblers preying on those who could ill afford it, and gun fighters by gun slinger outlaws and drunken cowboys! He has little use for alcohol and that is very clear, whether given to Indians who couldn’t handle it or Cowboys so young they hadn’t yet learned to handle it. He covered virtually every corner of the West in his writings, both books and short story’s. I recommend you enjoy them for what they are, an incredible attempt to help people see the country and the people the way he saw them, because he saw the future coming and how much everything was going to change!
Zane Gray. Always good, sometimes great, but always enjoyable! One of the very best writers of the old west. Writes like he has been there and done that as the old saying goes.
enjoyed it, as I have most of his books!
Good book hard to put down, great read
Western theme. I am glad the hero kissed the girl in the end instead of his horse. For a while I thought the horse would win out.
Classic western author.
Classic zane grey. One of his best!

Classic Zane Grey with some new twists to the plot.
The classic western by the man who may have invented the formula, but is always a good relaxing read.
