From award-winning author Philip Jose Farmer comes his most famous science fiction work: the first combined edition of the first two Riverworld novels, To Your Scattered Bodies Go and The Fabulous Riverboat.Imagine that every human who ever lived, from the earliest Neanderthals to the present, is resurrected after death on the banks of an astonishing and seemingly endless river on an unknown … astonishing and seemingly endless river on an unknown world. They are miraculously provided with food, but with not a clue to the possible meaning of this strange afterlife. And so billions of people from history, and before, must start living again.
Some set sail on the great river questing for the meaning of their resurrection, and to find and confront their mysterious benefactors. On this long journey, we meet Sir Richard Francis Burton, Mark Twain, Odysseus, Cyrano de Bergerac, and many others, most of whom embark upon searches of their own in this huge afterlife.

I have tried a few times to read this book and even tried listening to it via an audio version. I find parts of it very interesting, but just can’t get into the flow of the plot. Others might find it enjoyable, but for me it was not.
This is about only the first book in the saga, To Your Scattered Bodies Go, but I couldn’t find just that single book, because they tried to combine all the books into one movie. At least I think that is the reason.
At any rate, I have never been more willing to make a recommendation of a book in my life. I love to read science fiction, mainly …
I read this many years ago and recently reread it. Still unique and original and entertaining.
Read it in highschool and still love it
It droned On… it was way too wordy… no character was flushed out enough for me to love them or root for them.
Three reads, and the third time just as good as the first. Top notch writing by one of the GREATS.
It’s a good premise and a decent story but tends to unnecessarily drone on, in parts.
I have read the River World series some years ago. This first book is the best of the bunch. I highly recommend this book and if you get stuck on the story line, the whole series. Farmer caught me and I read more of his books afterward.
I love the premise and how the author carried it out. Plus, you get a second bite at some really interesting characters who have been long dead!
I love this book and this series. Highly recommended. The characters are vivid, the idea for the plot is amazing.
Interesting in its fanciful creation of a complicated combined Fantasy of what can happen after Death & a whole new mixed world of survival, culture, needs, relationships & what humans do with it all. I have read the first two of the Riverworld trilogy & am halfway through the third.
Could use some editing to do with details that at times feels …
I have been a fan of Riverworld since I first read it
probably in Junior high. Can’t beat it for classic Sci-Fi.
